Bill Bryson has been an enormously popular author both for his travel books and for his books on the English language. Now, this beloved comic genius turns his attention to science. Although he doesn't know anything about the subject (at first), he is eager to learn, and takes information that he gets from the world's leading experts and explains it to us in a way that makes it exciting and relevant.

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

No Hail Mary Here
Revisado: 04-26-25
Weir is a fine writer,, mixing humor and science in engaging stories, but this one just did not engage me. Coming off of his "Project Hail Mary," one of my favorite listens ever, it is not a deep criticism to tag "Artemis" a personal disappointment. The former blew me away, this one did not.

Historia
Opening with a panorama of Russian society, from the cloistered world of the Tsar to the brutal life of the peasants, A People’s Tragedy follows workers, soldiers, intellectuals and villagers as their world is consumed by revolution and then degenerates into violence and dictatorship. Drawing on vast original research, Figes conveys above all the shocking experience of the revolution for those who lived it, while providing the clearest and most cogent account of how and why it unfolded.

Deeply Detailed, But a Crackling Narrative
Revisado: 04-26-25
A daunting listen considering the tragic story and 47 hour length, but Figes' narrative is so deft and the narrator so stalwarts and energetic, this epic panorama of pain fairly crackles from start to finish.
Definitely in search of another Figes history now.

Grim and Unsatisying
Revisado: 09-03-24
A grim and grisly story with an unsatisfying conclusion. It's not badly written, but the story is often grisly and the drawn out ending offers coincidence and happenstance in lieu of a sense of righteousness and justice. On the positive side, the narration is well done.
Do not let this review deter you from getting your hands or ears on McDowell's "Blackwater: The Complete Saga" which still standa as the BEST listen I have encountered (which makes "Katie" even more of a disappointment. )

A Favorite from the Past Augmented
Revisado: 08-13-24
I read this book several years ago, and remembered how much I enjoyed it, so I sought out this audio version.
It was even more phenomenal than I remember, and yet I was quite surprised that I remembered virtually NOTHING from my first reading. That unsettled me a bit, but could not detract from Mt monumental enjoyment of this amazing story so beautifully narrated.
if you wantvto be both terrified and uplifted, feel both repelled and saved by humanity, awash in grief and bathed in the glow of pure joy. look no further!

Historia
In a rare blend of scientific insight and writing as elegant as the theories it explains, Brian Greene, one of the world's leading string theorists, peels away the layers of mystery surrounding string theory to reveal a universe that consists of 11 dimensions where the fabric of space tears and repairs itself, and all matter-from the smallest quarks to the most gargantuan supernovas-is generated by the vibrations of microscopically tiny loops of energy.

Cogent Explantions and Argumrnts
Revisado: 08-04-24
An excellent job of parsing the complex subjects surrounding Super Symmetry Syting Theory, it's predecessors and development.
I dislike math and skipped Physics in high school in favor of Advanced Biology, but I able to follow at least the gist of theories. Greene makes it fascinating and easy (relatively 😄) to follow and the strong, clear narration conveys it very well.
Great read fir those inclined.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Top, Top Shelf Sci-Fi Storytelling!
Revisado: 07-19-24
This was probably THE top of all my Audible reads. Steeped in real science that is all clearly explained in an entertaining and often humorous way, the story isn a near perfect blend of adventure, danger, humanity (including among non-humans) emotion and pure fun.
It is all enhanced greatly by Ray Porter's tour-de-force narration in his captivating, energetic, snarjy and authentically human style.
Monumental Great!

Historia
On July 12th, 1776, Captain James Cook, already lionized as the greatest explorer in British history, set off on his third voyage in his ship the HMS Resolution. Two-and-a-half years later, on a beach on the island of Hawaii, Cook was killed in a conflict with native Hawaiians. How did Cook, who was unique among captains for his respect for Indigenous peoples and cultures, come to that fatal moment? Hampton Sides’ bravura account of Cook’s last journey both wrestles with Cook’s legacy and provides a thrilling narrative of the titanic efforts and continual danger that characterized exploration.

An intriguing history
Revisado: 07-19-24
A solid and enjoyable historical sojourn, but somewhat less captivating to me as other history books I have has read. The narration is equally fine if not exceptional.
No criticism of the book intended here. History IS what happened, and embellishments would be far more egregious.

Historia
On May 18, 1860, William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates, and Abraham Lincoln waited in their hometowns for the results from the Republican National Convention in Chicago. When Lincoln emerged as the victor, his rivals were dismayed and angry. Throughout the turbulent 1850s, each had energetically sought the presidency as the conflict over slavery was leading inexorably to secession and civil war.
