Historia
Brooke wants. She isn’t in need, but there are things she wants. A sense of purpose, for instance. She wants to make a difference in the world, to impress her mother along the way, to spend time with friends and secure her independence. Her job assisting an octogenarian billionaire in his quest to give away a vast fortune could help her achieve many of these goals. It may inspire new desires as well: proximity to wealth turns out to be nothing less than transformative. What is money, really, but a kind of belief?

Unsettling inner thoughts
Revisado: 04-08-25
This author has an uncanny knack for exposing his characters’ egos in the most hair-curling, cringey way. There were many times I thought I couldn’t finish - or even listen another minute. I’m glad I did because it left me with something profound: the plausibility that people can be just as gross and despicable as you imagined.

Historia
From trips on private jets and encounters with world leaders to shocking accounts of misogyny and double standards behind the scenes, this searing memoir exposes both the personal and the political fallout when unfettered power and a rotten company culture take hold. In a gripping and often absurd narrative where a few people carelessly hold the world in their hands, this eye-opening memoir reveals what really goes on among the global elite.

Stunning
Revisado: 03-31-25
I expected TMI, but this was simply stunning. The title of the last chapter - It Didn’t Have to Be This Way - is a good summary and maybe the take-away lesson. I have no idea what saves or protects us from this kind of power run amok, but the author provides good reason to believe that the best one can do is protect self and family.

Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

Up until 2 am
Revisado: 12-01-24
I’m surprised by how hooked I got on this story. I wouldn’t have been interested but it was selected by my book club and when I realized this is the same author of Killers of the Flower Moon, I soaked up every detail and felt the import of a true story that shapes our current culture and politics. Bravo to another believable reconstruction of What Really Happened. I was up until 2 am because I had to know.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Beautiful story that could’ve easily been lost in the telling. So many characters but their voices and personalities were distinct. This might be my favorite Audible listen.

Historia
When Michael Lewis first met him, Sam Bankman-Fried was the world’s youngest billionaire and crypto’s Gatsby. CEOs, celebrities, and leaders of small countries all vied for his time and cash after he catapulted, practically overnight, onto the Forbes billionaire list. Who was this rumpled guy in cargo shorts and limp white socks, whose eyes twitched across Zoom meetings as he played video games on the side?

Lewis is a masterful storyteller.
Revisado: 02-26-24
I can understand why others would be frustrated. The details of this story are granular and Lewis appears to have swept many of them into the tale. But it’s confusing for anyone not familiar with crypto or financial markets. What matters is that it was also confusing for everyone who took part, but not confusing enough to quash their greed. The bombshell is in the last 30 minutes and it’s so good I can easily forgive the earlier twists and turns that were so boggling it felt like fiction.

The story opens in 1906 in New Rochelle, New York, at the home of an affluent American family. One lazy Sunday afternoon, the famous escape artist Harry Houdini swerves his car into a telephone pole outside their house. And almost magically, the line between fantasy and historical fact, between real and imaginary characters, disappears.

Real history in the fiction
Revisado: 12-26-23
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this story. There was enough historical detail to send me into research mode and down several rabbit hole learning details I never knew about well-known figures and events. I’m impressed that a tale pinned to a specific era could be so timeless.

Historia
1926, and in a country still recovering from the Great War, London has become the focus for a delirious new nightlife. In the clubs of Soho, peers of the realm rub shoulders with starlets, foreign dignitaries with gangsters, and girls sell dances for a shilling a time. The notorious queen of this glittering world is Nellie Coker, ruthless but also ambitious to advance her six children, including the enigmatic eldest, Niven, whose character has been forged in the crucible of the Somme. But success breeds enemies, and Nellie’s empire faces threats from without and within.

Narration makes it a struggle.
Revisado: 11-19-22
I just finished my first encounter with Kat Atkinson and was so mesmerized I couldn’t wait to fall into another deep dive. While the narrator for this is undeniably talented, the different dialects combined with foreign languages and liberal use of arcane words and slang made the story too hard to follow. During an hour-long walk, I only managed to progress 20 minutes in the story because I kept having to rewind to try and understand what was said.

Historia
As a panicked world goes into lockdown, Lucy Barton is uprooted from her life in Manhattan and bundled away to a small town in Maine by her ex-husband and on-again, off-again friend, William. For the next several months, it’s just Lucy, William, and their complex past together in a little house nestled against the moody, swirling sea. Rich with empathy and emotion, Lucy by the Sea vividly captures the fear and struggles that come with isolation, as well as the hope, peace, and possibilities that those long, quiet days can inspire.

Strout Never Fails
Revisado: 11-13-22
I thought I’d dread a trip through the anxiety and uncertainty of the pandemic’s first year. But Strout never fails to deliver the harsh and the delightful with an even-handed realism. My life has nothing in common with Lucy or other familiar characters who make an appearance, but it’s somehow comforting to find them nonetheless relatable. A very brief mention of Olive Kittredge made me double over with laughter. I’m so grateful for this author’s wonderful talent. Paired with Kimberly Farr’s narration, it’s perfection.

Unexpected
Revisado: 10-24-22
This was unexpected, timely, and useful. I’m 53, so much older than the target audience, but this helped me in two ways: 1) It let me know I’m not crazy about what makes it so much harder for black people in any grind; 2) hearing from people who figured out how to push past those limits.
I only wish I could share it with some I know who can’t afford Audible.

More Than I Expected
Revisado: 12-28-21
I’m older (52) and from a time when lack of resources made discussion of trauma wholly impractical. Worse, telling someone - anyone - what happened to you was guaranteed to create more trauma for you or someone else. It seems younger women have more outlets for what, to me, seemed as mundane and annoying as ants at a picnic. But hearing Minda Harts say and reiterate that these are traumatic incidents, experienced daily, gave me so much pause. Many pauses, actually, but I often stopped to re-examine my own experiences. Not to look at what happened, but to finally see *what happened to me*. How much of my heart and cognitive resources I gave to trying to solve this problem that’s followed me through 30+ years of my working life. I recently came to the conclusion I would let difficult people keep their own problems. This book took me a step further in helping me see how much I still carried with me. Thank you, Minda.
