Have you listened to The Crimes of Rooker Flynn? Then you know how that one ended … Mr. Witham has done it again! Cliff hanger! I should remove a star from my rating because I hate the wait! But nope!

The story starts where the last left off. Escape is on everyone’s mind but first you’re going to get a little bit of Rooker’s origin story. Gerba is still evil & shiq are still, yuck! There’s plenty with the old characters but new characters shine also.

Patch is a fabulous character and her journey is worthy of note! I loved done of the new monsters & there’s a cave that’s described so well you’ll feel like you’re there.

While this might be aimed at a younger crowd, as an adult I really annoyed it! Rooker was one of my favorite characters from The Legend of Black Jack and here his character is challenged to become more than who he was or thought he wanted to be. Fantastic character development.

This remains a dark story with body horror, monsters, evil bullies, abandonment, confinement, surgery without anesthesia, etc. but there are moments of positivity that bring hope for a happy ending …

… you won’t get it in this book but maybe the next! Keep reading and find out! Fantastic, imaginative story.

I received the audiobook from the author & I’ve ordered the paperback for my shelf (only because there isn’t a hardcover edition). The author’s narration brings life to the story, I can recommend the audiobooks. Enjoy!

Stop reading this. Go get the audiobook! You won’t be disappointed.

This is a really difficult review for me to write because I LOVED the audiobook & feel I won’t do it justice but also want to gush about it! What can I say, I’m conflicted?

Great spin off series! You should listen to The Legend of Black Jack first but you really don’t need to in order to enjoy this story. Still, I loved that book too!

The Crimes of Rooker Flynn is a bit his origin story and the first installment in the Locke Institute trilogy (book 2 is due JAN 25). I’m not a huge fan of long boring reviews that spotlight every inch of the book because I want to Listen And Find Out for myself. So I hope you didn’t come here for a book report.

I’ll mention it again later but I don’t want to ruin the story for you.

I suggest that you read the publisher’s summary (it’ll give you a taste of what’s to come) and GET ON WITH IT!

This is a fantastic story. It’s definitely darker (thank you Mr. Witham) than The Legend of Black Jack, but not too scary. I’m arachnophobic but loved the monsters in the book. The bad guys are baaad & I love to hate the bad guys! Oh their evilness is crystal clear!

There were so many great characters in The Legend of Black Jack!! If YKYK. Rooker Flynn & of course Jack Swift were my favorites so I was excited to see them together again. They are wonderful together!

As for the scary, darker moments. I read The Shining by Stephen King when I was 14 and wouldn’t suggest this one to anyone too much younger. Reason? Possible nightmares cuz there are a couple trigger warnings. I mentioned arachnophobia for a reason. lol

The author narrates the book & is the perfect voice for Jack & Rooker & a baddie! (another lol)

Why are you still reading this? I’m not going to share or give anything away! GO LAFO!

5+ stars! Fun! Very fun! Compulsive! Unique! Fast paced! Dark humor! Morally gray! More great characters!! Keymark is developing into an even richer wonderland of spectacular horror & had a depth, a richness that sucks you in for a memorable whirlwind tour.

Join me in Keymark! You won’t regret it.

I can’t wait to return to Keymark in the sequel, The Trial of Rooker Flynn.

PS - Chapter 2, page 47, last sentence … and it begins … NOOOO!!!! 🕷️🕸️

I laughed. I cried. I laughed so hard I cried. Jerc & Sean were voiced perfectly and that space dog was hilarious (beware there’s a lot of ehhh adult situations & swearing)

I listened to it twice today. I’ll prolly listen again when book two is published. Advanced friendly alien space dogs … you can’t go wrong with that! I also loved the humans, Micah & Jess!

Fun! Fast paced! A rollicking good time!

I enjoyed this audiobook. It’s funny, quirky & action packed with likable characters. Matt (Kaz) & Duke are a great guy & his talking dog companion.

It’s absurd & way out there! The narration was so much added awesomeness to an already fun story!

The addition of Marc & Giselle added 2 warrior companions that have 1500 years of catching up.

Book two is on my wishlist! Great audiobook!

This zombie book started out a little questionably but hit its stride & I couldn’t stop listening. Great narration! Interesting infection and who’s behind it! Chris and Ortega have a good banter! A couple secondary characters have been great! Love the twist at the end! Can’t wait for book 2! Book was gifted by Matthew Crow.

A crime drama with bite …

Brutal mystery/crime drama.

Mason McKay can’t remember the first ten years of his life. We spend the Book unraveling this mystery.

When we meet Mason he’s in a relationship with Natalie, she works for a small town police department that’s working on a case of an abducted girl. They have a blow up on his birthday over his adopted family. She sees that they love him and doesn’t understand his push back and disinterest.

Mason & Natalie break up.

There’s child trafficking, cult behavior, designer drugs, murder & mayhem. This is where the hard boiled crime cones in. Mason gets mixed up in a story line that has you wondering if he’s helping stop or participating in the criminal activity. Natalie is also confused. Is Mason good, bad or gray.

He’s been through a lot as the story unfolds & you’re left wondering, is Mason a cold blooded killer?

This story left me with a lot to think about and THAT alone boosts it’s rating. Parts that seemed confusing sat with me & made me think. What was causing his change in behavior. Is it permanent?

Oddly I wished the story of Mason and Natalie continued in a book two. There was resolution and a fine ending that left it open for another story. I’m not sure where it can go from here but it’ll be fun finding out.

The author gifted me an audible copy with the promise that I’d review the story. Thank you, I hope there’s a book 2. The narrator was the perfect choice!

4.5 stars.
