I used to think commercialized processed sugar was the big problem making most Americans fat, and ultimately sick with diabetes, heart disease, and cancer, and that this was a result of food for profit, not for people. I still think that. However, this book opened my eyes to all the other junk manufacturers put in packages to make people buy more "stuff" that simply tastes good and looks edible. His definition of processed products sold as food is the most valuable part of the book. Then he'll teach why companies put these ingredients into what they sell, and how poorly regulated those additives are. Ultimately, he'll argue that it is the government's job and step in and regulate this industry properly,

The US needs a government for the people by the people. What we have is one for corporations, and unscrupulous politicians who take kick-backs from them to increase the chance they will be elected. Processed food corporations have manipulated our nutritional intake, they are literally killing many, ruining the lives of many more, and everybody, but not those corporations, pays the health care bills.

Good central hypothesis which he supports well.

Are we responsible for anything we do, or are we just programmed that way? Sapolsky will convince you we are programmed, or largely programmed.

Some of the book repeats or summarizes sections from his book on behaviors, which I learned more from and enjoyed more. This one is a sequel which takes part of that book and expands on it. Ultimately, could have been shorter and better, but still really worth a listen.

Bryson is widely read. His genius is bringing diverse facts together, organizing them, then describing with beautiful English, which he then reads for you himself (usually the best way). I enjoyed, "A Brief History of Nearly Everything" by him even more. One people I talked to found The Body and the other one a bit dull, but they're perhaps valuing entertainment over learning. I think it is another great work from him.

I made a mistake buying this because I had listened to one of Dr Barret's other books and enjoyed it. I did not read the description of this one carefully enough. It is a collection of contributions from various researchers on emotions, and some of those I have no interest in at all. This is not a book to be listened to start-to-finish unless you are a psychologist. Even then you would probably want to skip chapters and go right to the ones that interest you most, but then audiobook is not the correct format to do this.

Some of the auditors are OK, others sound a little like AI.

I just finished How Emotions Are made, which I did not entirely agree with, but is a solid scientific discussion based on fact. That one is worth reading. Then I started listening to this.

If you'd like 12+ h of someone talking to you like you were both a child and an idiot, about woo-woo factors and work outs, then this book is for you. It is not for me though ..... gave up on chapter 8. I guess it might be dramatically better after that, but I did not have more time to waste just in case.
