Hey you guys, it’s Leslie. I’m excited to share my story with you. Now, I’m gonna be honest: Some of the details might be vague because a b*tch is fifty-five and she’s smoked a ton of weed. But while bits might be a touch hazy, I can promise you the underlying truth is REAL.

REAL F*cking Talk
Revisado: 10-05-23
Memoirs are my favorite books, particularly hearing them read by the author, and I have read and listened to many. And let me tell you, this one is an experience on a whole nother level. An absolute adventure that bestowed upon me laughter, tears, inspiration, wisdom, and even a bit of courage. I loved every part of the story and wild ride that Leslie takes the reader on, and her delivery was perfect. Like catching up with a dear friend and them being so excited to tell you everything that's happened since y'all last talked. Authentic, enthusiastic, empowered, outspoken, unapologetic. Goals.

Important history lesson with amazing soundtrack
Revisado: 02-20-22
Chuck D has a voice and perspective that commands authority and tells me that whatever he says is worth listening to closely. This cross section of the music and people who made a deep impact on his life and the world at large is still so relevant and powerful and needs to be heard by all.

Shrill is an uproarious memoir, a feminist rallying cry in a world that thinks gender politics are tedious and that women, especially feminists, can't be funny. Coming of age in a culture that demands women be as small, quiet, and compliant as possible - like a porcelain dove that will also have sex with you - writer and humorist Lindy West quickly discovered that she was anything but. With inimitable good humor, vulnerability, and boundless charm, Lindy boldly shares how to survive in a world where not all stories are created equal.

Revisado: 02-20-22
Glad to know who Lindy is now. Hope more people get to meet her too.
Nothing about a person's physical appearance can be a gauge of their value as a person, and we as a society limit greatness by expecting and allowing it from only certain folks.
Lindy is funny and authentic and has a hard earned platform to boost the story of herself and so many others. I would love to be friends with her, but I'll settle for finding where I can follow her on social media.

Historia
From the creator of the blog Renegade Mothering, Janelle Hanchett's forthright, darkly funny, and ultimately empowering memoir chronicling her tumultuous journey from young motherhood to abysmal addiction and a recovery she never imagined possible. Pregnant at 21 by a man she'd known three months, Janelle Hanchett embraced motherhood with the determined optimism of the recklessly self-confident. After giving birth, she found herself bored, directionless, and seeking relief in wine, which she justified as sophisticated and going well with chicken.

Real and tragic and messy and beautiful
Revisado: 02-05-22
As a woman who has lived through the hell of addiction and suffering and tragic loss, I can attest that no one judges us more harshly about our motherhood than we do ourselves. I've read other great memoirs written by sober women, and I've heard many women in the rooms tell their stories, but it is tragically rare that anyone includes the really ugly details. It's not that they didn't happen, it's that society praises those with 'high bottoms' who have made it to recovery without somehow being a total depraved embarrassment. Most of us who could not manage that tend to keep quiet so we don't have to relive our shame, and those of us who do share our tragic tales are often lauded as brave and inspiring by the same women who act like we're too abnormal to actually befriend. It was very satisfying to hear the honest story of a woman with a low bottom who was an utter disappointment to herself but never gave up hope of being a good mother. I certainly don't understand or relate to everything she did or didn't do, but I totally understand why she shares it and why it's so damn important that we all do. There were many times in which I felt worthless as a mother, but I was able to heal and grow and somehow become admired by and best friends with my now adult sons. May other readers come away with compassion and hope for themselves or compassion and hope for those who are still lost and suffering.

I've been aware of JVN for a little while but late to the new Queer Eye party, although recently infatuated. So glad I found this book too. And getting to hear it directly from him is the best. Genuine, raw, funny, touching, and utterly gorgeous. I too have made it through hell, and stories like this reinforce my strength and determination.

Shubaly swore to avenge the wrongs against his mother but instead plunged into a magnificently toxic love affair with alcohol.

Brutally Beautiful
Revisado: 10-30-21
This is such an excellent listen!! I came across Mishka several years ago on a Rich Roll episode, and he was one of those guests that really got through to me. I was a year or so into sobriety, being saved by cycling and running, and enthralled by those having similar stories that they were able to put into words. I hadn't paid much attention since, except reading a couple of posts and catching a couple episodes of his podcast, although always touched by them. I love to read and really enjoy memoirs and finally started using audible so I could more often. I'm so glad I finally got to this one. Such an incredibly painful and yet inspiring story for me. And best to have heard in his own voice. This has left so many feelings and thoughts stirred up in me, the heaviest one being the much needed reminder that the years at war with myself made me powerful beyond measure and capable of any challenge I fully throw myself into. Major gratitude to Mishka and everyone else actively apologizing to themselves and encouraging others.

NOT THE WHOLE BOOK AT ALL
Revisado: 10-01-21
It was great, but I'm so disappointed. The book is the most impactful I've ever read, and I've gifted it to several women over the years. My own copy is worn and thoroughly underlined and highlighted. I savored it for years, and every time I picked it up again I would end up getting exactly what I needed to hear in the moment in time. I was so excited to stumble upon the audio version because I would be able to revisit all the stories and lessons while doing other things in my home. Sadly it's only a small portion of the book. I still encourage others to listen though. But definitely read the actual book of you can.

From the hero whistleblower of the infamous Theranos scam, Thicker than Water is a look at never-before-revealed details behind closed doors at the company, revealing a cautionary tale of corporate bullying, gaslighting, ego, and wealth running amok in Silicon Valley. Tyler Shultz had been in the workforce for less than a year when he emailed Elizabeth Holmes, his employer and the CEO and founder of Theranos, with concerns that the company’s lab practices were faulty, ignored quality control, and were potentially dangerous to patients.

Revisado: 09-24-21
I'd not heard/read a great deal about Theranos but enough to know that it was a pretty weird situation and compelled to checked out Tyler's story when I stumbled upon it in the Audible listings. I'm actually surprised at how much I enjoyed listening to this. Tyler reading it himself and in such a great conversational manner was definitely what made it an excellent listen for me. The story was also well laid out and easy to follow and keep up with even though I listened on several occasions over a week or two.

Curious about Feng Shui and book included with my plan. I finished it because it was a short and easy listen. The narrator was fine, but the personal notes of the author did not lend credibility. Enough about essential oils! I will pursue more knowledge of Feng Shui but definitely not from the author.
