Historia
Amy Bloom began to notice changes in her husband, Brian: He retired early from a new job he loved; he withdrew from close friendships; he talked mostly about the past. Suddenly, it seemed there was a glass wall between them, and their long walks and talks stopped. Their world was altered forever when an MRI confirmed what they could no longer ignore: Brian had Alzheimer’s disease.

Exquisite
Revisado: 09-26-22
Have I ever felt more moved by an audiobook? This is exquisite work, at once devastating, tender, genuinely sweet, and filled with levity. I can’t remember the last time a story (and the artful delivery of that story) has prompted me with more soul searching and thoughtful reflection. This book is a gift, thank you.

Historia
To Paradise is a fin de siècle novel of marvelous literary effect, but above all it is a work of emotional genius. The great power of this remarkable novel is driven by Yanagihara’s understanding of the aching desire to protect those we love—partners, lovers, children, friends, family, and even our fellow citizens—and the pain that ensues when we cannot.

Masterpiece
Revisado: 02-11-22
This is a complex story weaving together disparate, yet connected narratives of an escalating, collective unraveling. The characters are rich, the writing is very smart. Yanagihara is a gifted in her ability to suck you deeply into the inner lives of so many characters. You’re left with many questions. This book will be in my head for a long time.

Historia
When Lissa Yellow Bird was released from prison in 2009, she found her home, the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in North Dakota, transformed by the Bakken oil boom. In her absence, the landscape had been altered beyond recognition, her tribal government swayed by corporate interests, and her community burdened by a surge in violence and addiction. Three years later, when Lissa learned that a young white oil worker, Kristopher “KC” Clarke, had disappeared from his reservation worksite, she became particularly concerned. No one knew where Clarke had gone.

Thorough but tedious
Revisado: 11-23-21
I wanted to love this book. I was initially drawn in by the storytelling and compelling characters, but felt bogged down by the tremendous amount of tedious details. Specifically, I didn’t feel that all the transcribed conversations needed to be included. While it did add some depth and nuance, it felt like hours of this story could have been omitted without influencing the readers’ experience. I actually felt that the last chapter was the strongest, and I think that’s mostly because it didn’t concern itself with recounting every possible detail. Overall, excellent journalism, but it’s challengingly dense.

Historia
In the early summer of 2014, Farida Khalaf was a typical Yazidi teenager living with her parents and three brothers in her village in the mountains of Northern Iraq. In one horrific day, she lost everything: ISIS invaded her village, destroyed her family, and sold her into sexual slavery. The Girl Who Escaped ISIS is her incredible account of captivity and describes how she defied the odds and escaped a life of torture in order to share her story with the world.

Terribly brave
Revisado: 10-20-21
This account is terribly brave. I went into it knowing to some degree what it would hold, but the voice of this story made it so personal, so close. It’s a hard book, but an important book.

Historia
Brandi Carlile was born into a musically gifted, impoverished family on the outskirts of Seattle and grew up in a constant state of change, moving from house to house, trailer to trailer, 14 times in as many years. Though imperfect in every way, her dysfunctional childhood was as beautiful as it was strange, and as nurturing as it was difficult. At the age of five, Brandi contracted bacterial meningitis, which almost took her life, leaving an indelible mark on her formative years and altering her journey into young adulthood.

A treasure
Revisado: 07-23-21
This memoir is a treasure. This book is poignant whether or not you’re already a fan of her music (though if you are a fan, you’ll love her songs even more knowing the places from which they were written). There is such humanness in her storytelling, with attention to beauty and acceptance of imperfection. Like her music, this book filled me up with warmth and hope and heartbreak - a soul-affirming story at its best.

A new favorite
Revisado: 06-17-21
This book is a new favorite. I plan to buy a hard-copy version to own as well so I can return to it often. I had heard good things about this work, but listening to it, I was still shocked by the poignancy of Tolentino’s writing. The voice in this writing strikes such a strong chord with my experiences, and I’m finding myself inquiring into my own self-delusions. This book is truly worth your time.

Historia
At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than “an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise.” But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.

Historia
In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humor and heart, she tells of growing up one of the few Asian-American kids at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother's particular high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother's tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food.

Revisado: 05-11-21
This book is such a gift. Vulnerability shows up in the form of curiosity, anger, and incredible tenderness. It’s a beautiful exploration of grief and love that allows space for an open wound to still exist. I found it to be such a comfort to read. Thank you for writing this, Michelle Zauner.

Historia
In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

This is an incredible piece of historical and analytical writing. I learned so much from Wilkerson’s direct retelling of events and the contexts in which they occurred. I’m grateful to have this knowledge. This is the kind of history we need to be taught in school.
