Baddingham has also enticed Cameron Cook, a gorgeous, domineering woman executive, to produce Declan's programme. Tried to like it
Revisado: 01-18-25
Maybe I am not just the audience for this genre, but I have to hope that other examples of the genre aren’t so casually sexist and homophobic. I stuck with it for a while because of the reader - her English and Irish characters were fun - her American accent was almost unbearable. Once I got to the hateful lesbian stereotype and the assumption that everyone agrees that such a person was awful, I was done. Do woman readers believe that only youth = attractiveness? Ugh.

Gorgeous writing, best narration EVER
Revisado: 11-09-24
Most importantly- I have never listened to an audiobook as wonderfully read as this. And the writing is gorgeous, so the combination so enjoyable. It’s a man’s life and while he notices everything about other people, you never know what he’s thinking and feeling at any depth. Maybe he wasn’t meant to. But again- this narrator is AMAZING.

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Incredible.
Revisado: 05-20-24
This isn’t the kind of thing I normally read but I’m so glad I listened to it. The writer is an intelligent and thoughtful person who struggled to extract herself from a horrific abusive gaslighting upbringing to create the person she is. Highly recommended.

Historia
Golden Globe-winning actor Michael C. Hall (Six Feet Under) performs Truman Capote's masterstroke about a young writer's charmed fascination with his unorthodox neighbor, the "American geisha" Holly Golightly. Holly - a World War II-era society girl in her late teens - survives via socialization, attending parties and restaurants with men from the wealthy upper class who also provide her with money and expensive gifts. Over the course of the novella, the seemingly shallow Holly slowly opens up to the curious protagonist.

Why I like audiobooks
Revisado: 03-06-24
I was unfamiliar with the book, and hearing Michael C Hall read it, capturing the immature, at times slightly sneering, at times jealous tone of the text, was just great. And it's short :)

Historia
People start dropping dead around Charlie, giant ravens perch on his building, and it seems that everywhere he goes, a dark presence whispers to him from under the streets. Strange names start appearing on his nightstand notepad, and before he knows it, those people end up dead, too. Yup, it seems that Charlie Asher has been recruited for a new job, an unpleasant but utterly necessary one: Death.

Fun, well read, entertaining.

It’s silly, plot turns maybe a little too convenient, but the narrator really brings it alive and makes it a delightful listen.

Alexandra Auder’s life began at the Chelsea Hotel—New York City’s infamous bohemian hangout—when her mother, Viva, a longtime resident of the hotel and one of Andy Warhol’s superstars, went into labor in the lobby. These first moments of Alexandra’s life, documented by her filmmaker father, Michel Auder, portended the whirlwind childhood and teen years that she would go on to have. At the center of it all is Viva: a glamorous, larger-than-life woman with mercurial moods.

Fascinating and honest
Revisado: 07-17-23
I loved hearing this in the writer’s voice, hearing her do her mother’s voice and then hearing how it slid in and out of her speaking as herself as well. Everyone I’ve told about it loved it.

Historia
An underground classic, Crash explores the disturbing potentialities of contemporary society's increasing dependence on technology as intermediary in human relations. In this hallucinatory novel, the car provides the hellish tableau in which Vaughan, a "TV scientist" turned "nightmare angel of the highways", experiments with erotic atrocities among auto crash victims, each more sinister then the last.

Mindy Kaling has lived many lives: the obedient child of immigrant professionals, a timid chubster afraid of her own bike, a Ben Affleck–impersonating Off-Broadway performer and playwright, and, finally, a comedy writer and actress prone to starting fights with her friends and coworkers with the sentence “Can I just say one last thing about this, and then I swear I’ll shut up about it?”

I give it one star for the almost-comedic value. But It's not even up to the level of heat that you'd get in text messages from a horny stranger you met on a smartphone app.
