The greater master - Follett or Lee?

There are probably enough critiques and synopses of the story, the series, and Ken follett's career. I can't say that I have read every review. What I want to talk about is the masterful storytelling of John Lee.

I have listened to the entire Kingsbridge series and the Century series. This book, in particular, had many characters with dialogue. Lee was able to produce a different voice for each character, with language appropriate accents, and match the same voice over and over throughout not only this novel, but keep the voice the same when the character appeared from novel to novel.

The reader is part of the entry fee when we choose an audio book versus a bound book. Lee is worth the price of admission.

Either I came to understand the Queen's English more than I did listening to M&C, it was just the book, but I found it much funnier. Bees. Too funny.
The only thing I didn't love about the narration was that he didn't differentiate the voices distinctly enough. I found myself confusing Stephen and Jack often.
Else, another great book.

Being a Midwestern American, it took a little while to acclimate to the accent of the narrator. That, and the vocabulary.

Usually, I can up the speed to 1.2 or so, but this I kept at the neutral 1, maybe 1.05 to understand the narrator.

The story is complex and requires attention to names of people and ships, maritime vocabulary, and putting it all together with tremendous action.

There is something fascinating about the ability to have written history about naval battles before the invention of metal - based ships, modern artillery, hot to mention air power. The idea that you see your opponent coming for hours and understand that battle is certain. The degree to which you're at the whims of mother nature because wind and current is the power of motion is something we have little understanding of today.

True Grit is a story that has some rhyme with Huckleberry Finn, though there are more than enough differences that can also make them just as easily lacking much in common all at the same time. Female versus male, but both told in first person. Educated versus uneducated, but both wily beyond their years. The differences and similarities go on.

Unfortunately - and I don't comment on this lightly - I did not enjoy the way that Tartt told the story. Overall, the voices she chose were good. However, I didn't like her cadence nor the lack of emotional rise and fall. In her essay read after the novel's conclusion, she tells of her interpretation that Maddie's voice does not have a great deal of emotional fluctuation. However, there are a couple of very serious moments where Tartt's voice says the words of Maddie with as much emotion as if she was asking for help folding laundry.

I'm the end, I'm happy I listened to the book, but may have to read the paper version and see what the voices in my own head sound like.

The most memorable part of this was comparing jail time given to low level marijuana possession of poor blacks compared to misdemeanor and low level punishment for alcohol offenses, including DUI, which is primarily a white crime in America.

There were definitely parts that I had a hard time with - if you commit a crime, are you surprised at the punishment?

At the same time, those unable to afford decent private counsel are not truly made aware of their rights - and most importantly - the rights and other privileges they'll forfeit by not fighting their daunting charges, which prosecutors pile up to try to get a quick plea bargain. Start with voting, then move on to bank loans, then to housing applications, and finally job applications.

The book also carves an idea for the path she thinks civil rights activists should take, which has some unexpected and excellent ideas, and they do not include demonizing whites.

Great cloak and dagger but so much more. Incredibly rich, utilizing real people and events to color the life of Ned Willard, English advisor and spy.

As a prototypical, white, 40-year old yuppie who listened to this as a privileged, affluent, suburban kid, I found it both entertaining and informative. Then it got a little weird.

UGod does a solid job telling the story of his own tale of growing up, the formation of Wu Tang, and all of the crazy stories related. I felt like I was getting a primary source like a historian would use about life in the Park Hill projects in New York in the 80s. He does a pretty good job of making you feel like you're there, though he spends more time talking about the people but almost no time describing the surroundings. Still, those characters - real people - are brought to life in an intense, yet matter of fact manner.

He goes off the rails toward the end when he talks about how the group had grown apart and problems between members in the group, as well as with UGod. It felt a little weird; maybe people who paid closer attention to their personal lives outside their music will enjoy this part more.

Overall, I recommend it, but there are parts where you're forgiven if you fast forward on through.

This is probably the strangest story I've ever heard. I don't know what to believe and what is bs. I can't say I found it funny. More like a train wreck - a disaster that I couldn't stop listening to. I would say it's a waste of time, but... well, it's probably a waste of time. Maybe if you're a huge Norm Macdonald fan, you'll like it or even love it.

Comprehensive lecture on the American Civil War

Gallagher does a nice job threading together the political, military, and personal sides of the Civil War.

There are a couple of things that could have been better. First, he doesn't have a great storyteller's voice, like a Dan Carlin. Second, there are several times when he quotes a primary source but leaves out the person's name, which I feel makes it more personal.

Gallagher is very enthusiastic about the subject matter which makes up for his not being what we might envision a great performer to sound like.

The story is interwoven. He tells us about political aspects for a chapter of two, then will go into military issues. All throughout, he quotes primary sources, not only those in power, like Lincoln, Grant, Davis and Lee, but also soldiers and civilians to give us a feel for what it felt like for the people living through it.

It's awesome. Start to finish. A good amount of primary sources to keep you from getting too much of a view from above. There is a great balance of macro strategy and the experience of the troops in combat - infantry, air, and naval. Well done.
