Historia
In The Monsters Know What They're Doing, Keith Ammann lightens the DM's burden by helping you understand your monsters' abilities and develop battle plans before your fifth edition D&D game session begins. Just as soldiers don't whip out their field manuals for the first time when they're already under fire, a DM shouldn't wait until the PCs have just encountered a dozen bullywugs to figure out how they advance, fight, and retreat.

No matter your level of DM-ing, this is a must
Revisado: 03-30-21
First off I will note, the voice actor does well, he is plain, but gets the information to you clearly and precisely. I would highly recommend speeding him up. I listen to it at 1.3x and it sounds good, because he does talk a bit too slow.
If you are a lifer, like me (lifetime Dungeon Master) this is an absolute must. Unless you have read the Monster Manual, inside and out and dissected every flavor text and stat; this is going to be a great tool for you. To say this is not worth it, means you are much more a slide by the seat of your pants DM, make it up as I go along and hope for the best (I am in many ways this way too).
But the details he brings to light is almost essential. Even if you don't use everything, just knowing the Goblins rarely melee attack if ever. Orcs have more power than you realize and a band of Drow's are an extremely formidable foe can make your battles better.
I ended up also buying the book for quick reference, in battle I like to have the page bookmarked to refer to when things get hot. Do they run? Do they disengage? Do they Dash? Rush? What? This book will tell you, or help you to CORRECTLY figure out what the monsters do. Up to you if you want to stick with it or not.
Wish I knew about this sooner, but I have to tell you, it has really improved my battles. Even my PC's have told me that they didn't expect the Kobolds to lay out traps and take off when it got tough, they were used to fight to the death or something.
As a DM you should have Players Manuel, Monster Manual, Dungeon Masters Guide and this book. You will be unstoppable!

Historia
Before the Great Wars and the Old Race of Man, there was a world populated by different beings: elves, demons, faeries, and the like. The Elves and the Demons constantly fought each other, until the Elves finally imprisoned them with the enchanted tree called the Ellcrys. Thousands of years later the Ellcrys still survives and still keeps the Demons imprisoned within the Spell of Forbidding, but not for much longer, the Ellcrys is dying.

Addictive. Great story with great characters
Revisado: 02-04-20
I admit, I fell in love with the TV show. The characters, the visual designs and how well done it was.
After researching the books, I find there are many people who are angry that the show only took bits and pieces of the books and jammed them together. I understand, but to be honest I loved both equally. If you can separate the two and believe they are different plots by essentially two different writers, it will be easier to digest.
Terry Brooks is an awesome story teller. After any given chapter you can picture in your mind the room the characters were in, or the way the forest smelled or what temperature it was on the beach. His character development is outstanding and you really get to know the protagonists. If there is a flaw, he is sometimes too descriptive and drags out some chapters that could of been wrapped up earlier. But since this is not a race but a journey, I just sit back and enjoy.

Story gets extreme, "Spike" is great but...
Revisado: 01-28-20
I really enjoyed this book. But as the story progressed it was a little over the top at parts, which is fine. Personally I like to get some resolutions to plot points before adding in a ton more. It was sometimes hard to digest all at once. At the end of the book, it all came together and I truly enjoyed it.
SPIKE does a great job on the audio book, his voice (imo) IS Harry Dresdin, its very easy to associate it with the protagonist. The bad part is the production value is marginal at best. They did not rerecord parts where he had saliva issues and parts where they could of edited where he swallowed and such.
Worth the listen, just be prepared to wade through some mouth issues and poor production. Do not fret, the next book the production value is much better.

Butcher is master story teller. "Spike" had issues
Revisado: 01-15-20
Butcher does a wonderful job setting the mood, and building up characters. I started listening to these books after watching the TV series, the Dresdin Files (which are pretty good too). I was pleasantly surprised at how the book explained things, the way it flowed and the richness of the characters. I am now on Book 3. That’s important because:
“SPIKE” has some swallowing, saliva issues during the first 2 books. It can be a bit much but I am telling you the story is well worth it. The 3rd book? All cleared up and the production value sky rockets. So tough your way through the first two (in regards to the production value), and the 3rd , 4th , etc will be much better.
Would recommend this to anyone who enjoys shows like Grimm, Haven, or any of the Witches of (Eastwick, East End, etc).

Jumps around way too much, hard to keep focused
Revisado: 01-09-20
After playing the Witcher 2, Witcher 3. I started this audio book 5 years ago. I remember I did not like how the book was written and the progression of the story was a mess.
After watching the Netflix series I wanted to give this another chance and yet again, I am stuck with the same problem. The story jumps around too much, leaving what events and storylines in a holding pattern while another scenario of less importance is talked about.
Not sure how this ever became a best seller, though I love the characters, ideas and scenario... I feel like this could of been organized much better than it is right now.
The narrator does a great job, except he tends to over exaggerate the "accents" to a point of annoyance. I appreciate the effort, but he needs to tone it down and let the story flow and not get interrupted by sometimes barely understandable accents.
Hoping the second book is better written.

Highly recommended, but does drag out in the end
Revisado: 10-26-17
The story was outstanding, and kept me interested through out until the end. It seemed to drag out in the end and fizzle. I would highly recommend the audiobook to RPG fans, it is great I was just disappointed in the ending.
After listening to the Dragonlance series, it took a chapter or two to switch over to Kristin Kalbi's voice but once I got used to it, I loved it. She did a great job... especially with Olive's "BOOGERS!" LOL!
