This book is a blueprint for those who may not fit the image of a “traditional” runner—that is, someone who is larger in size, less athletic, out of shape, or dealing with any kind of health issue that slows them down—to feel empowered to lace up their shoes and embrace the body they have right now.

Historia
When sporting events were put on hold in March 2020, commentator Andrew Cotter shifted to working from home. The one-on-one competitors? His two Labrador retrievers, Olive and Mabel. In the hilarious videos that ensued, the dogs engage in various contests, from bone-snatching and breakfast-eating to crushing it on the dog walk, while Cotter narrates to hilarious effect.

Worth waiting for
Revisado: 03-16-21
I ordered the hardback edition when it first came out, but held off reading because I really wanted to hear the story in the author's voice, but the American edition was a bit delayed
Like many, I discovered Olive, Mabel & Andrew via Twitter.
The dogs & Mr Cotter's wry observations drew me to the book.
As he mentioned, you wonder how a person could fill a book about his dogs
I knew he was an outdoorsman with a penchant for mountain climbing
So I did wonder if the book would hold my attention
Suffice it to say that I finished it the first day & actually wished it had been longer. The story is most engaging & I was surprised how the hikes were presented in such a delightful manner

Historia
In this intimate, haunting, literary memoir read by the author, an American icon tells her story for the first time, in her own gorgeous words - about a challenging and lonely childhood, the craft that helped her find her voice, and a powerful emotional legacy that shaped her journey as a daughter and a mother.

Disappointed Again
Revisado: 01-08-20
After listening to this book, I remembered why I don’t read actors’ autobiographies, I’m usually disappointed in what they reveal about themselves. Just another unhappy person with no self awareness of their own choices.

Historia
With the rising global demand for cotton - and thus, slaves - in the 1840s and 1850s, the need for white laborers in the American South was drastically reduced, creating a large underclass who were unemployed or underemployed. These poor whites could not compete - for jobs or living wages - with profitable slave labor. Though impoverished whites were never subjected to the daily violence and degrading humiliations of racial slavery, they did suffer tangible socioeconomic consequences as a result of living in a slave society.

Good Information
Revisado: 09-04-19
I found this book informative, but as a history or even a sociological study, I must question some of the conclusions because the data is so sparse.
I especially object to any statement beginning, “they must have thought,” or “must have felt” which is why I subtracted a star
In addition I would seriously suggest skipping the audiobook & going with the written work. This is a 17 hour advertisement for the benefits of professional narration. The author is zealously earnest and emphasizes 2 words in 3. There is no phrasing & many mispronunciations. I kept talking to my iPhone: Indigent, indigent, indigent! Merriam-Webster doesn’t even have an alternate pronunciation.

Historia
Los Angeles of 2039 is a baffling and bifurcated place. After the Collapse of 2028, a vast section of LA, the Disincorporated Zone, was disowned by the civil authorities and became essentially a third world country within the borders of the city. Navigating the boundaries between DZ and LA proper is a tricky task, and there's no one better suited than eccentric private investigator Erasmus Keane.

Just a fun listen
Revisado: 06-13-18
There are no great shakes here, just a somewhat amusing sci-fi take on detective pulp fiction
There were definitely parts that dragged a bit with entirely too much exposition
My biggest complaint is that the narrator chose to voice Keane as Joe Pesci
I don’t think I could actually listen to a book read by Joe Pesci & this choice just jarred on my nerves
Additionally, I would not have envisioned the character as anything like Joe Pesci and the voice took me “out of the story” and into critique the narrator mode every time I heard it
Yikes

Historia
In the summer of 1862, after a year of protracted fighting, Abraham Lincoln decided on a radical change of strategy - one that abandoned hope for a compromise peace and committed the nation to all-out war. The centerpiece of that new strategy was the Emancipation Proclamation: an unprecedented use of federal power that would revolutionize Southern society. In The Long Road to Antietam, Richard Slotkin, a renowned cultural historian, reexamines the challenges that Lincoln encountered during that anguished summer 150 years ago.

Insightful Analysis
Revisado: 05-17-17
A very thorough and detailed account of the history and political machinations of the early Civil War, leading to the Emancipation Proclamation. The intrigues of the almost dysfunctional general officer corps on the Union side is completely fascinating.
The narrator handles the material quite well, it is a non-fiction work and I do not appreciate dramatized readings. I would definitely listen to any other audiobooks he has narrated.
There is a lengthy description of the entire Antietam battle(s) which may not appeal to the more casual Civil War buff--including me. I listened to all of it, but it can easily be skipped by those of us who prefer a more overall view

Another incredible journey with Jon
Revisado: 02-18-17
Jon Ronson is so insightful and takes the reader right into the heart of whatever he researches.
In this case, it was more of a frightening experience, because Ronson, himself, did not realize how big the issue was.
Now, we're sadly living the results.

Historia
As she was digging deep into the lives of community members, Heather Lende, the obituary writer for her tiny hometown newspaper in Haines, Alaska, began to notice something. Even the crustiest old Alaskan sourpuss who died in a one-room cabin always had Halloween candy for the neighborhood kids, and the eccentric owner of the seafood store who regularly warned her about government conspiracies knew how to be a true friend - his memorial service was packed.

Can I tell you about my grandchildren...
Revisado: 10-26-16
What disappointed you about Find the Good?
I found it to be meandering rather than the insightful read I expected
What could Heather Lende have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
It could have been more cohesive. Actually, although it was quite short, it seemed more filler or fluff than anything. It night have been a good article of interest in a magazine, but certainly not enough to cover even such a short book -- which is possibly why the grandchildren stories kept popping up. I almost felt the book was an excuse for the grandchildren stories.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
The performance was fine. The author is not a professional reader, but the performance was natural and her warmth came through.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Honestly, I struggled through this one, it had some pleasant moments, but it seemed MUCH longer than under three hours.

Awful
Revisado: 08-13-15
What disappointed you about The Accidental Tourist?
Deadly dull, unrealistic characters & no story
Has The Accidental Tourist turned you off from other books in this genre?
I don't think it has a genre, it just rambles on and on and on
Which scene was your favorite?
none
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Glad that it was over & happy that audible allows you to speed up narration to end the misery quicker
Any additional comments?
Narrator should receive special recognition for staying awake through entire reading.
