Why is Miami… Miami? What does the heartbreaking fate of the cheetah tell us about the way we raise our children? Why do Ivy League schools care so much about sports? What is the Magic Third, and what does it mean for racial harmony? In this provocative new work, Malcolm Gladwell returns to the subject of social epidemics and tipping points, this time with the aim of explaining the dark side of contagious phenomena. Through a series of gripping stories, Gladwell traces the rise of a new and troubling form of social engineering

Politics laced throughout
Revisado: 01-03-25
I've read and loved all of Gladwell's books, but this one turned my stomach. Suddenly I wondered, did I miss the political agenda in all the others before? From cheap shots at political opponents to selective statistics to support radical agendas, this one has it all. Trump, COVID, Florida, white guilt.. it's all jammed in there, and it's obvious what he's pushing.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

Good, but not his best
Revisado: 10-04-19
Gladwell's writing is unparalleled and this book is no exception. He threads interesting and relevant stories into his big-picture lessons he wants to teach his readers. But 2 things come up in this book that disappointed. First, for some reason, very loud music and random sounds are laced throughout the book. So if you're listening in the car or on earphones, suddenly you get blasted with the music or confused by the background noises. Second, Gladwell talked down to certain readers a bit in this one, which I'm disappointed in. If you doubt or disagree with some of his theories, you might find yourself a bit bothered when he tells you that you're "wrong." I suppose it's because this one is a bit more political than the others, but I don't feel like it was necessary or contributed to the book when he did it.

Historia
Plenty of experts argue that anyone who wants to develop a skill, play an instrument, or lead their field should start early, focus intensely, and rack up as many hours of deliberate practice as possible. But a closer look at research on the world’s top performers shows that early specialization is the exception, not the rule. David Epstein examined the world’s most successful athletes, artists, musicians, inventors, forecasters and scientists. He discovered that in most fields—especially those that are complex and unpredictable—generalists, not specialists, are primed to excel.

Joined my top 10 list
Revisado: 09-01-19
Phenomenal book. It teaches a balance between depth and breadth, bringing peace to my lifelong struggle of trying to specialize when I'm more of a generalist. Now I feel like I can be myself and position myself in life and career the way I am. This now joins my top 10 list, which also contains 7 Habits, How To Win Friends, Outliers, and The Law. I couldn't wait to make my daily commutes to play this while driving and now I wish there was more!

Historia
When Rick Van Warner found himself searching abandoned buildings and dangerous streets looking for his missing son, he had no idea that the synthetic, pill-form heroin that had snared his teen was already killing so many. In the years of pain and heartache that followed, as he tried to save his son from opioid addiction, Van Warner discovered what the American public is just now becoming aware of: Opioids prescribed for even minor pain relief are so addictive that even a few days of use can create dependency.

Incredible Storytelling & Eye-Opening Subject
Revisado: 04-26-18
WOW. My husband and I devoured this book on a recent road trip, lamenting when we had to pause it to stop for gas or meals. We both considered ourselves pretty educated on the subject of opioid abuse prior to reading this, but we learned so much through Rick's amazing storytelling. This book is as much about just how to be a human as it is about drugs and addiction. And the icing on the cake is a wonderful narration by Traber Burns! Bravo!

Surprisingly engaging & informative!
Revisado: 08-24-17
I love hummingbirds, but part of me thought I was crazy for choosing to listen to almost 13 hours of a book about them. Now I know I would be crazy NOT to recommend this book to other people!!
Terry has a mastery of prose that is pleasant to listen to, and her stories about her rescued hummingbirds are moving, shocking, surprising, and super engaging. I also learned SO much about these magical birds that will help me support their majestic wildness even better in my own backyard.
And the narrator is EXCELLENT! She does believable, consistent voices for different characters that really brings the book to life.
If you're on the fence about committing this many hours of your life to a book about birds, just do it! I promise it will be worth it!
