Historia
Ahren can hardly believe his luck. His apprenticeship finally comes to an end, and Khara's interest in him is growing by the minute. He and his companions leave the Southern Jungles and sail westward, this time in search of two Paladins, who are apparently living a peaceful existence on one of the Isles of the Cutlass Sea. Yet their quest proves full of difficulties, for a war among the pirates has transformed the Cutlass Sea into a bubbling cauldron, hiding its own tragic drama.

What’s wrong with the edit?
Revisado: 04-04-25
A lot of weird cuts, misses, retakes throughout. Whoever did the final edit definitely missed a fair bit. Chapter 13 had a LOT. Such a bummer since the story is great and I’ve really enjoyed all of the audio performances in the series so far. This should really get some attention

In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

Amazing!
Revisado: 01-12-23
Towles’ lyrical tapestry of narrative, dialog, and plot delivered a delightful mix of excitement and satisfaction. Performance was superbly nuanced, although pronunciation of some Russian words and names were unmistakably western. Highly recommend!

Historia
After 16 novels, Jacqueline Winspear has taken the bold step of turning to memoir, revealing the hardships and joys of her family history. Both shockingly frank and deftly restrained, her story tackles the difficult, poignant, and fascinating family accounts of her paternal grandfather’s shell shock; her mother’s evacuation from London during the Blitz; and her soft-spoken animal-loving father’s torturous assignment to an explosives team during WWII.

A rare delight! All fives!!
Revisado: 11-21-22
My wife and I are huge Winspear fans, having read (ok-listened to) all of her Masie Dobbs novels. I think we most enjoyed hearing this very entertaining - and at points, poignant - memoir read aloud by the author herself! A rare delight!! Overall - a terrific read! Performance: memorable inflections as only the author could share. Story: fascinating! Thank you!

Delightful storyline, captivating performance!
Revisado: 06-28-22
I have to say that Winspear’s research and storyline and Cassidy’s aural performance make the Masie Dobbs series wonderful and this episode in particular delightful! We’ve listened to every one! We felt the thrill of discovery, the tension between the characters and the pain of loss and suffering. And we laughed at Cassidy’s depiction of Masie’s friend, Priscilla, as she spoke through a bandaged mouth. Can’t wait to start the next in the series! Well done!!

It was just one year ago that she and her team of marine biologists had stunned the world with their incredible breakthrough. And now, they were about to do it again. But an ocean away, something strange was unfolding. Along a lonely coast in South America, an experimental Russian submarine, long thought to have been dismantled, has suddenly resurfaced. And the US Navy had taken notice, sending officers John Clay and Steve Caesare to investigate.

A fun story and great sequel!
Revisado: 10-14-18
I wasn’t sure how the three very different plot lines were going to converge, but it was worth the wait! Narrative pacing and character development felt believable and real. Can’t wait to start the third in the series!

A classic! Extremely well read!
Revisado: 01-08-17
I'm a fan of the classics and particularly of Sir Walter Scott. I loved the performance: authentic accents might be off putting to the naive, but is a wonderful reflection of the past. Scott's keen observations of 17th century life make this a fantastic listen.
