Interesting profiles
Revisado: 12-30-21
Very interesting profiles of major industrial businesses covering the last 20+ years, written by investment analysts with deep knowledge and history with the companies. Lots of useful lessons from the various cases studies for present day investors and managers.
I did find some of the “new economy” commentary a bit superficial, this part might have been better left out (despite the title, it’s only a small fraction of the material). But overall a very informative book.

Historia
Hasidic Williamsburg is famous as one of the most separatist, intensely religious, and politically savvy communities. Less known is how the community survived in one of New York City's toughest neighborhoods during an era of steep decline, only to later oppose and also participate in the unprecedented gentrification of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Nathaniel Deutsch and Michael Casper unravel the fascinating history of how a community of determined Holocaust survivors encountered, shaped, and sometimes fiercely resisted the urban processes that transformed their gritty neighborhood.

Excellent
Revisado: 10-23-21
Detailed, very well researched history of Hasidic Williamsburg. I was attracted to this book because I live in the neighborhood, but likely of interest to anyone looking to learn more about NYC urban planning or Jewish history - though the deep analysis of some narrow topics (eg Williamsburg pool hours) might be excessive for some audiences.
Despite touching on many controversial political topics, I found the tone balanced and academic throughout. Thought the narrator was fine, no idea on Yiddish pronunciations though.
Highly recommend

Historia
Was Christopher Columbus's voyage to the Americas in 1492 the most important event in the history of the world? Professor Eakin's provocative answer is a resounding "Yes" - as he presents his case in an intriguing series of 24 lectures. These thoughtful lectures will remind you that when Columbus completed his voyage, he found a people unlike any he had ever known, living in a land unmentioned in any of the great touchstones of Western knowledge. You'll learn how the European world, animated by the great dynamic forces of the day, Christianity and commercial capitalism, reacted to Columbus's discovery.

Highly recommend this course and Professor Eakin’s other series on revolution in the Americas. I’ve done 20+ history courses on audible and his are definitely among the best.
The material is dense and detailed but fascinating, and he spends a lot of time placing events in their broader (European) historical context. These courses really changed my perspective on early US history - something I thought I understood well!
