Historia
Here, anthropologist David Graeber presents a stunning reversal of conventional wisdom: He shows that before there was money, there was debt. For more than 5,000 years, since the beginnings of the first agrarian empires, humans have used elaborate credit systems to buy and sell goods - that is, long before the invention of coins or cash. It is in this era, Graeber argues, that we also first encounter a society divided into debtors and creditors.

Authors, anti-capitalist bias
Revisado: 04-24-25
A contrived polemic by a communist Cassandra. The author has read a lot of economic history. However, this conclusions in the last two chapters are neither credible nor viable. I sense that the author watched the movie the fight club one too many times.

Historia
The Passage of Power follows Lyndon Johnson through both the most frustrating and the most triumphant periods of his career - 1958 to 1964. It is a time that would see him trade the extraordinary power he had created for himself as Senate Majority Leader for what became the wretched powerlessness of a Vice President in an administration that disdained and distrusted him. Yet it was, as well, the time in which the presidency, the goal he had always pursued, would be thrust upon him in the moment it took an assassin’s bullet to reach its mark.

Amazing Accomplishment but….Vietnam?
Revisado: 10-18-24
I am in absolute admiration of Mr. ROBERT Carro and his meticulous research and biographical style. I’ve read his first work about Robert Moses, the power broker and found it equally as profound and educational.
I found the four volume work of Lyndon Johnson
Of equal stature and great accomplishment.
However, I think Mr. Caro has a duty to his readers to explain why he skirted the entire Vietnam tragedy and LBJ’s role in that tragedy.

(Amadeus). Lauded by Verdi, Debussy, and other music legends, the celebrated conductor Arturo Toscanini raised the standards of orchestral and operatic performance over an astonishing 69 years on the podium. But as he did so, he acquired a reputation as something of a tyrant, who unleashed an explosive temper at musicians if rehearsals did not meet his expectations.

Historia
It is commonly believed that the Great Depression that began in 1929 resulted from a confluence of events beyond any one person's or government's control. In fact, as Liaquat Ahamed reveals, it was the decisions made by a small number of central bankers that were the primary cause of the economic meltdown, the effects of which set the stage for World War II and reverberated for decades.

Just as Steve Coll told the story of globalization through ExxonMobil and Andrew Ross Sorkin told the story of Wall Street excess through Too Big to Fail, Christopher Leonard’s Kochland uses the extraordinary account of how the biggest private company in the world grew to be that big to tell the story of modern corporate America.

I joined the libertarian party in 1983. I was aware that David Koch, Charles Koch’s brother had run as the Libertarian vice presidentIal nominee with Ed Clark for President of the United States in the past. However I was unaware how Charles Koch had shaped the Cato institute of which I attended in 1984. I recall hearing a Cato employee suggest that the EPA should be abolished. Myself and another guest at the Cato seminar were astounded by such a radical and shocking suggestion. Although, I agree with Charles Koch’s Fear that America is becoming socialistic and the power and virtue of the individual is on the decline.
However upon reading author Leonard’s book I agree that what Charles Koch has promoted is really fascism… The combination of Socialism and crony capitalism.
This is the second book by Christopher Leonard I’ve read in the last three months, the first one was the lords of easy money which was spot on in my opinion. I am looking forward to reading his book about the meat industry. He is one of the best authors I’ve read in quite some time.

Alan Riding introduces a pageant of 20th-century artists who lived and worked under the Nazis and explores the decisions each made about whether to stay or flee, collaborate or resist. We see Maurice Chevalier and Edith Piaf singing before French and German audiences; Picasso painting and occasionally selling his work from his Left Bank apartment; and Marcel Carné and Henri-Georges Clouzot, among others, directing movies....

I am grateful to the author Alan riding for his book and the show went on. I think of the book as the description of the cross roads for western civilization in the 20th century.

Arguably the greatest science fiction writer who ever lived, Isaac Asimov also possessed one of the most brilliant and original minds of our time. His accessible style and far-reaching interests in subjects ranging from science to humor to history earned him the nickname "the Great Explainer". I. Asimov is his personal story - vivid, open, and honest - as only Asimov himself could tell it.
