Excellent story and performance
Revisado: 05-22-23
My only complaint with this audiobook is that it ended. The narrator is extraordinary. I saw the movie twice before listening; not recently, but I knew the story and the characters. I do not like most of McCarthy's other stuff, but this one is very enjoyable.

another typical Douglas book
Revisado: 05-19-21
Another typical Douglas book ... horrific crimes, his self-congratulatory presentation of admittedly impressive detective skills, and constant digressions - that provide eerie entertainment. Douglas seemed more directed than in his other books as he focused on the mistakes and incompetence of the law enforcement and judicial processes that prosecuted the crimes.
Good job of narration from Barrett, as usual.

(Netflix) Mindhunter fans will enjoy
Revisado: 03-23-21
Fans of the Netflix Mindhunter series will immediately fall into line with Groff's narration of John Douglas' latest. As always with his books, once one gets acclimated to the horrific content, the exaltation of his admittedly excellent profiling abilities, and constant digressions, they will be eerily entertained.

Revisado: 12-08-20
Well written, well narrated, but ultimately mediocre. Maybe this was scary in the 70s, but now it's pretty lame. I did finish it though, so if in the mood for a "B-movie" audiobook, here ya go.

Historia
For years John Moe, critically-acclaimed public radio personality and host of The Hilarious World of Depression podcast, struggled with depression; it plagued his family and claimed the life of his brother in 2007. As Moe came to terms with his own illness, he began to see similar patterns of behavior and coping mechanisms surfacing in conversations with others, including high-profile comedians who’d struggled with the disease.

Okay but better suited to podcast format
Revisado: 05-25-20
Depression isn’t funny - it ruins lives; however, levity is certainly a viable strategy to deal with it. The irreverent title and the tone are fine. And the book provides some salient insight and entertainment, but it also contains sections that I would have edited or not included. The author’s rambling and stream-of-consciousness style works for the podcast but less so for the book. That said, my opinion may have been different had I not been a podcast listener.

Entertaining story and great narration

"Defending Jacob" was a very entertaining legal thriller/drama; it was mostly predictable but had a few twists. Grover Gardner made it a great performance (as he usually does).

Historia
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

Disappointing narration - Switching to Kindle
Revisado: 04-08-20
I have really enjoyed previous Larson books on Audible. Here, I am several chapters into this and I like the story, but it is marred by the narration. I don't know if it's the accent, audio quality or enunciation, but I miss a lot of words. I typically listen on the go rather than in a quiet setting, and I am struggling to understand the narrator. I will be returning and reading the Kindle version.

Historia
Lincoln is the cornerstone of Gore Vidal’s fictional American chronicle, which includes Burr; 1876; Washington, D.C.; Empire; and Hollywood. It opens early on a frozen winter morning in 1861, when President-elect Abraham Lincoln slips into Washington, flanked by two bodyguards. The future president is in disguise, for there is talk of a plot to murder him. During the next four years there will be numerous plots to murder this man who has sworn to unite a disintegrating nation.

Lincoln/Vidal/Gardner an excellent team
Revisado: 03-19-20
I am a 20-year Audible listener and this was my best experience to date. It is rare to find a combination of a subject one is fascinated with, a great writer, and a master performer.
While this was my first Vidal novel, I have spent many hours reading and listening to Lincoln biographies, reading and listening to Civil War non-fiction, and listening to Grover Gardner reading Civil War non-fiction. I think Gardner is an excellent narrator of non-fiction and now find he is a great performer of non-fiction. I found his portrayal of the different characters just what i would have expected.
I am very tempted to continue on with the "Narratives of Empire" series with Vidal/Gardner.

Historia
An 11-year-old boy's violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City's most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.

engrossing story, great performance, weak ending
Revisado: 02-18-20
Started and finished while the HBO version was running so Batemen/Mendelsohn/Winningham/Erivo heavily influenced my interpretation of characters. King's story was very engrossing with strong character development. Will Patton brought the text to life and I really enjoyed his performance. Despite all of this excellence, I was disappointed in the climax and denouement. While it technically wasn't a Scooby Doo ending, it really felt like one. The dark, dark beginning did not warrant such a clean ending.

Meh, okay
Revisado: 02-27-19
Started out good but became too predictable. Also it became increasingly more like the typical cheesy radio drama production. It might have been better off as a narrated book.
