Revellers are flocking into Greenborough for the yearly Dark Greenborough Festival, a three-day event celebrating local folklore, superstition, and the darker side of life. What the public doesn't know is that there has been a warning sent to the police, saying that Greenborough will be a very dangerous place this year. The anonymous letter ends with the Latin phrase, Mors certa, hora incerta: Death is certain, the hour uncertain.

Not terrifying, a bit boring.
Revisado: 11-24-24
It was billed as terrifying, but I didn't find anything about it at all terrifying. I found the story a bit pedestrian. Not very innovative or interesting. I thought the resolution was disappointing. It was surprising as I usually enjoy this author.
I found it difficult to distinguish who was talking, due to the narrator not making an effort to give the characters distinctive voices.

Difficult listen due to the truly awful narration
Revisado: 07-15-24
I love these stories and have listened to every one of them up to now. But my goodness, this narrator is TERRIBLE. I am about half-way through. So far, the story is not engaging enough to overcome the flawed narration. I have never heard such terrible character voices. It's really grating on the nerves.
I will continue to listen, but only because I trust the author to pull the story out of the sludge.

I mean.... I finished it. But it was pretty silly.
Revisado: 07-15-24
You have to swallow a lot of nonsensical science and fantastical paradoxes. They broke their own rules repeatedly. And none of the characters were all that likable. The main female character was really super unrealistic and her father just took his lot in stride with competence and little emotion. It was kinda weird. The bland narration matched the bland characters. I was interested in the mystery, and while I didn't mind the little twists and portions of the resolution, I felt they didn't really give a satisfactory answer to what happened to Nora. The time allotment to the various parts made little sense. And I REALLY didn't like the last few chapters. Meh. It was free.

It was a bit of a slog made worse by the narration
Revisado: 01-16-24
I really liked The Heavens May Fall, giving it a rare 5 stars, but this one was rough. I stuck with it, all the way to the end hoping for some sort of a twist to make it all worthwhile; but, sadly, no. They just took hours and hours to get the to the forgone conclusion. It was mystifying after the previous book. I can't say I would recommend this book. It was boring and drawn out and unsurprising. I really did not like the way the story was laid out or how any of it was resolved.
The narration only made matters worse. Almost all the characters spoke in the same monotonous tones. It was coma-inducing tedium.

Ridiculously implausible and silly
Revisado: 01-04-24
There is no way this was a true story. There were far too many ridiculous things to list. Speaking as a criminal defense atty who has worked MANY capital murder cases, including diminished capacity cases, there is no way this scenario would EVER play out the way it was written. It is virtually impossible. I was very disappointed to see the author purports to be a former prosecutor. This sort of author gives lawyers a bad name. The narrator was inoffensive, at least.
SPOILERS
*
*
Let's start with the most obvious. Utah and probably ever other state has statutory requirements for those taking on capital murder cases. This guy would NEVER EVER have qualified; NO judge would permit it. They must have been licensed 5 years and had a minimum amt of continuing education, a minimum number of felony cases and homicides under their belts. This guy had NOTHING. And none of the ABA guidelines were met, either.
A guy from Louisiana named BRIGHAM moves to UTAH? ha! All of the characters were bizarre.
The notion that he physically went from law firm to law firm the day AFTER he was licensed looking for a job is just laughable.
The number of ethics violations was absurd. The attitudes of the lawyers, judge, court personnel, everyone was.... silly.
The procedure was completely wrong. The rules of evidence were violated repeatedly. The whole thing was stupid. I just can't bother...
I would NOT recommend this book and will be deleting the other book by this author that I have in my queue.

In 2059, two vastly different groups of people portrayed by the compelling trio of Brendan Fraser (Academy Award winner), Luke Kirby (Emmy Award winner), and Vanessa Sears (Dora Award winner) undergo cryonic suspension. While their bodies are frozen, their minds, still active and awake, are uploaded into a massive quantum computer. The first group are all astronauts, about to leave Earth on a one-way interstellar colonization mission. The second group consists of convicted murderers and volunteers who elect to serve their sentences in a virtual-reality prison.

Laughing at the hysterical anti-woke reviews.
Revisado: 12-01-23
I only gave the story three stars not because there is a transgender character (gasp!) or because it mentions covid in passing (horrors!), but because I found the story became boring and I lost interest midway through. It started out interesting and I was intrigued to see where it would go, but it really went nowhere.
People complaining in the reviews that a sci-fi story has political themes or social commentary really offer a stronger demonstration of how political and religious "leaders" mold and warp people's opinions and worldviews than this book did. A political party decides to divide people over covid and transgender people and half the country loses its mind over those exact issues.
So, yes, if the mention of covid or the inclusion of a transgender character cause you to lose your mind, then this book definitely is not for you.
If those things don't freak you out, but you enjoy really good storytelling, this probably is not for you, either.

Absolutely ridiculous.
Revisado: 11-23-23
I stuck it out for about 4 1/2 hours, but just could not justify wasting any more time. I felt like it was written by a teenager. Nothing about it was even plausible. The characters were all awful people. It just was so bad. The narration was horrible. I sped it way up to make it tolerable. If I hadn't gotten it for free, I'd have requested a refund. i can only surmise the 5 star reviews are from ride or die fans.

Well.... I thought it had potential... at first...
Revisado: 11-12-23
I thought it started out a bit slow and then got interesting and then went off the rails... First off, I should have taken the description, "'set in the biotech world (and deceptive beauty) of Switzerland" more literally, as it really has very little to do with biotechnology in the end; it was merely set in that world. Barely. This was disappointing as that description is what drew me to the book to begin with, (along with the narrators) (and Harlan Corben's endorsement. Shame on him if he really called this ingenious.)
The narrators were good, though, again, puzzling choices were made there, too. And the story, wow.. So many gaping plot holes. The author's unfamiliarity with the topics he chose to include were glaringly obvious. Every topic was poorly researched. Practically none of this was believable. Nothing was plausible enough to suspend belief.
At one point I was wondering if the story had been hacked up for the audiobook and left out too many significant details, but, apparently, it was just that poorly conceived, unfortunately. The nonsensical motives for the villains could only be spelled out by the villains as they were so ridiculous. At the very end I was left thinking, "WTF was the point of all this?" The whole thing was unfortunate.
