From Martin Clark - praised by Entertainment Weekly as "our best legal-thriller writer" - comes a wickedly clever, tenderhearted, and intricately plotted novel about a hard-luck lawyer's refusal to concede defeat, even as fate, the court system, and a gang of untouchable con artists conspire against him.

What an ending ... had to write a review ASAP
Revisado: 01-27-22
It is not often that right after hearing "Audible hopes you've enjoyed this program" my first thought is - get me to a computer, I have to tell someone ... anyone about this book. Some books start out strong and have a weak ending, some flag a bit in the middle. If you asked me a few hours ago about this book, I would have said it is a good book and I am enjoying it. Who knew it was going to wallop me at the end. To be truthful, I suspected it might, but didn't see how that was going to be pulled off. And, I have been disappointing by amazing books occasionally fizzling out. Also, a few hours ago, this was just a good book.
The other thing I liked about the ending, was - yes it is amazing, yet there were still some hard truths for our hero to face. It was not a living happily ever after ending. If you need more information, you can get some details from some other reviewers, I came into this knowing people liked the book without too many specifics except it involved a fallen lawyer.
For me, that allowed the book to deliver the most enjoyment. If you decide to go straight from this review to the book, I hope you enjoy the ride and the great ending as much as I did.

Awesome Russian Spy and American Courtroom Combo
Revisado: 08-11-21
The first half of this book involves an American spy operation on Russian soil with a dramatic escape. In the second part, what actually happened is debated in a courtroom trial back home in the U.S. Both sections are riveting and there are no dull sections in the entire book.
The author and narrator are new to me ... and I thought I had discovered all the good ones. The author liberally sprinkled in some Russian phrases and narrator made it sound authentic when our hero was in Russia. Fortunately, Charles Jenkins spoke Russian and translated for me. Include that with a description of the Russian environment, and you actually start to feel like you are there, looking over the shoulder of the main protagonist.
The second half which involves the government accusing Jenkins of being a traitor and his lawyer being hamstrung by being unable to refer to classified documents and witnesses is admirably handled. Very sophisticated arguments are spun by both sides and the only possible hole I found involved a card. Shouldn't it have been checked for fingerprints. Of course the author could fix that by having the person handing it out wearing gloves. (You have no idea what I'm talking about - you would have to re read this review after finishing the book - and who does that)
Forgetting my small quibble, this is an awesome book. If you have been in the doldrums by a run of bad or mediocre books, this is going to really brighten your upcoming days.

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Andy Weir & Ray Porter Just one upped the Martian
Revisado: 08-04-21
According to some reviews the book after the Martian (Artemis) was a letdown. Some said that the bar was set too high by that great book. After listening to this book, I am now looking down at that high bar. What a fun, wild, scientifically sound ride. Andy Weir backs up his amazing plot with plausible scientific scenarios instead of magical solutions and setups. He even captures how messy science can be with the main character occasionally coming to incorrect conclusions on phenomena and causing unintended problems with his carefully reasoned experiments. All this while being funny and interesting. Some reviews may contain spoilers and I will resist that urge, it is better to experience this without too much information except - maybe this is the end of mankind. Ray Porter shines with his narration reminding me, it is difficult for a book experienced visually to compete with one skippered by a top notch performer.
There was one time I was ahead of the main character on a critical conclusion and I think that was a gift from Weir as I shouted into the vacuum - if that is true, you have to warn your friend. Eventually Ryland Grace realized this and acted - maybe my ranting got through.
Weir also avoided the literary crash landing. Sometimes a book will be a great ride but peter out with a weak ending. Everything is tied up perfectly and you will never guess at the direction it takes. I recommend you get started right away to see for yourself.

Goodwin describes the broken friendship between Teddy Roosevelt and his chosen successor, William Howard Taft. With the help of the "muckraking" press, Roosevelt had wielded the Bully Pulpit to challenge and triumph over abusive monopolies, political bosses, and corrupting money brokers. Roosevelt led a revolution that he bequeathed to Taft only to see it compromised as Taft surrendered to money men and big business. The rupture led Roosevelt to run against Taft for president, an ultimately futile race that gave power away to the Democrats.

Progressive Republicans not an oxymoron in 1900's
Revisado: 04-04-21
This was not my usual type of book choice and coming from a Canadian perspective, I only knew a little bit about Teddy. I also shy away from a 36 hour read. But, Doris Kearns Goodwin held my attention with a riveting account of Roosevelt and Taft and I enjoyed every minute while getting an education about American politics in the 1900's. Her inclusion of the power to do good by the muckraking journalists of the day and small biographies of the important journalists who helped Roosevelt move the needle on social justice was necessary to get a feel for the events of that time.
I was tempted to look at spoilers on the internet for how lives turned out, but waited until I finished before looking for more information and videos of the two presidents and their family and friends. Being introduced to McClure's Magazine was such a joy, I spent $5.00 and downloaded issues from 1906 to 1910.
If you can be fascinated about history, this is a worthwhile listen. And how many non fiction books of an era long gone can be followed by a peek at video of the main characters! The book starts out with Roosevelt returning from Africa and Europe after leaving for a year when his Presidency was over. After finishing the book, I found a video of his boat arriving and him stepping out into cheering throngs welcoming him back. Amazing!
If you are a Republican reading this review and offended by my headline, I am thankful Audible does not allow the dislike button any more. Still, I recommend you take a look at all the wonderful ideas from this era where the old Republican conservative guard was taken kicking and screaming by other Republicans with high ideals and admirable morals into a more humane society.

17 hours of great listening and only 50 characters
Revisado: 07-25-20
Well I couldn't do it. Or didn't want to do it. Express how much enjoyment this book brought me in a short 50 character headline to get your attention. I've been shying away from writing reviews while enjoying some great books like Fair Warning by Michael Connelly. I've already raved about that author and Joe Nesbo and a few others. I noticed some people are warning you that this book was boring, or too graphic or ... not worth it. Not so - hence a review. Also, where has Karin Slaughter been all my life? I never heard of her before and an investigation shows this person has been prolific and popular spinner of tales.
I love it when authors show a deep understanding of human nature and can get me in the heads of people who are different and not one dimensional. Sprinkle in some mysteries to be solved and a few zigzags in the plot and I have a new writer to follow.
I didn't know whether I liked or despised Rusty the defense lawyer and dad of the good daughter. You will have to listen to the entire book and make up your own mind. There is no way I'm going to taint whichever way you will lean on that issue by giving my opinion.
The fun is in the journey you will take.

Harry Hole is not in a good place. Rakel - the only woman he's ever loved - has ended it with him, permanently. He's been given a chance for a new start with the Oslo Police, but it's in the cold case office. What he really wants is to be investigating cases he suspects have ties to Svein Finne, the serial rapist and murderer who Harry helped put behind bars. And now, Finne is free after a decade-plus in prison. When Harry wakes up the morning after a drunken night with blood that's clearly not his own on his hands, it's only the very beginning of what will be a waking nightmare.

This one is going to hurt!
Revisado: 10-24-19
Best Harry Hole story yet. A real roller coaster ride. If you have read the previous books and have gotten to know some of Harry's friends and enemies, be prepared to get injured on this journey.
If this is your first Joe Nesbo book, you are starting at the top and it is downhill from here. You can be comforted to know that the other books in this series are better than most detective books that have a following.
As always, John Lee is a top notch narrator. I'm not Norwegian, but his pronunciation of Norwegian locations and names sounds authentic enough to make me want to visit this interesting country.

Entertaining Adventure With a Satisfying Ending
Revisado: 04-28-19
I never watched Lost, but it seems to be the favorite reference point for any work involving a plane crash with a lot of inexplicable mysteries presented to the survivors. From what I have heard, the ending for this popular series was not very fulfilling.
This book piqued my curiosity and there were certainly some strange happenings after the crash. I wasn't that impressed with them because they seemed far out there, but was willing to continue to see how it all ended. ... and it ended quite well.
Everything made sense to me with how this science fiction piece was wrapped up, but the best part was there was still another story to tell about the heroes. Time travel, big ideas, likeable flawed people and an interesting take on a future self who made evil choices for selfish reasons while the protagonist from the present was a noble person who made choices that put his life in jeopardy to save people. - can we really change that much?
I'm waiting for the movie version of this fun listen.

Weak and Predictable Best Young Adult Book 2014
Revisado: 03-22-19
This was an award winner, and maybe as a young adult when you haven't amassed countless finished stories, you may be stunned at the plot twists. There are some young adult books that I have recently enjoyed immensely, but this one did not do it for me. I also love time travel books, but again - this plot didn't deliver for me. Also the everyday insights of the human condition were not inspiring or interesting.
I was going to go three star for meh - but when the mouse hovered over the line "pretty good" pops up. "OK" popped up with two stars and that was how I felt after finishing the book. I usually only am inspired to write reviews of books that really move me - a lot of my reviews have a five star selection. So I learned something today about the star system - when I go slumming with a three - I mean two star review.

Loved it. Suspected Everybody, Except the Killer
Revisado: 03-07-19
A lot of breadcrumbs are dropped in this book, and in the tradition of suspecting who is the least likely person to be the evil one, I swallowed them all. The backdrop for this story involved learning about the world of autopsies as our hero is interning at a facility to perform her 250 autopsies on her way to a full time career. Livia's sister went missing a year ago and a male body ends up on her table that has a connection to her sister.
I actually wanted to stop listening at one point because I had an inkling of what was going to happen as this story was told from two time frames. One involved Nicole, the missing sister and the other was a year later as Livia tried to figure out what happened to her sister from investigating other abductions that had occurred.
The book did go the way I was dreading, but it added a twist that I was not expecting - and I was okay with it. As for figuring out the identity of the monster, I suspected everybody except the killer. I did get it before I was told, but only very close to the telling.
This is a highly recommended listen.

Solid Sci Fi Entertainment
Revisado: 08-17-18
The narration was top notch ... and it breaks the rule where a writer should not be his own narrator. The story is about a future where humans are enslaved by an artificial intelligence which cares for their needs but denies any freedoms because of our track record of wars and destroying the environment.
After many unsuccessful attempts by humans to overthrow their mechanical masters over hundreds of years there is a new plot afoot that involves awakening the iceman in a far off location. One type of robot that has some empathy built in is unwillingly enlisted in this task with a newborn to care for. It is actually not the unit that was groomed for the task, but hey .. that's life where plans often go awry.
These units are usually destroyed after 15 years because they develop too much of an affinity for humans. This unit is near that point but since it is now out in the wilderness with the human child and out of the reach of the master system called Core, it's neural nets evolve to become ever more human-like while bringing up the child and searching for the iceman.
If they can find the iceman there is an ancient plan available that just might be able to save the human race. After many years the child has grown up and the iceman is found. The foolproof ancient plan is kicked into motion. You will enjoy watching it carefully unfold. Just remember .. plans are great until real life punches them in the gut.
