Historia
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College – Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is – unless she betrays the man she loves.

I don't care what all the haters say, this series is just so good so far, and these graphic audios are really delivering! Whereas the first book for me was just a really good time to read (i.e., world building nor plot were super intense, but rather building up for the rest of the series), the plot of this second book definitely got juicier. While the miscommunication trope was super frustrating at times as the reader, I also kind of appreciated that Violet and Xaden were going through such trials in their relationship - if things get too perfect too soon and stay that way, it gets boring! Side note - I do think the root of their constant disagreements (i.e., Violet not getting the information/truth that she needs from Xaden) will end up being an essential facet of her character development. That's all I'll say about that. Just like the first graphic audio, really loved this one and all of the voice actors are fantastic. My same criticism from the first graphic audio still applies to this one unfortunately: the music during the steamy scenes is just awful. I feel like production is going for intense, lust-fueled, rip-the-clothes-off vibes but the music sounds like it's straight from the battle scene of the Power Rangers or something. So cheesy, please make it stop!

Historia
Only the extraordinary belong in the kingdom of Ilya—the exceptional, the empowered, the Elites. The powers these Elites have possessed for decades were graciously gifted to them by the Plague, though not all were fortunate enough to both survive the sickness and reap the reward. Those born Ordinary are just that—ordinary. And when the king decreed that all Ordinaries be banished to preserve his Elite society, lacking an ability suddenly became a crime—making Paedyn Gray a felon by fate and a thief by necessity.

Two narrators but confined to their own chapters
Revisado: 08-06-24
You know what really steams my beans? When there are two voice actors that aren't able to consistently voice their own character throughout the book! Let me explain. The book switches off between chapters from Paedyn (FMC) and Kai (MMC). So in the Paedyn chapters, Cecily Bednar Schmidt is the ONLY voice in the chapter, so she voices both Paedyn and Kai (as well as all other characters in the chapter). When it's a Kai chapter, Chase Brown is the only voice actor in the chapter, so he voices both Paedyn and Kai, as well as all other characters in the chapter. It's very distracting to sometimes have a feminine voice for Paedyn and sometimes a masculine voice, and vice versa. I know it's more work for production to assign voice actors lines like a script instead of to whole chapters, but I've heard it done many times before (the Gild audiobook is just one example) and it's SUCH a better listening experience. This bothers me worse than only having one voice actor. I do want to be clear that in spite of this, I do think the voice actors are talented and did a good job (I particularly loved Chase's voice); this is a criticism of production. Production aside, the story wasn't super well written in my humble opinion, the plot was a little thin compared to other books I've read in the same genre, and the dialogue was too cheesy for me at times, IMO. To be fair, I am 30 and not considered a "young adult" by any means, but I have enjoyed YAs before that do not make me cringe and roll my eyes as much as the dialogue does here. It's a decent story but can't hold a candle to my favorites.

Loved it, but some quality control needed
Revisado: 07-14-24
I love graphic audios and will always choose them over regular audiobooks when there’s a choice. Personally I was happy with all the voices. I’ve become a big fan of Gabriel Michael, who voices Xaden as well as Lucien from ACOTAR :) I have a little bit of beef with production on this one though that I haven’t noticed in the handful of other graphic audio series I’ve listened to. 1) There are some inconsistencies in pronunciation both within and between some of the actors. A little distracting, and takes you out of the world. 2) I also am one of those people (thanks to ADHD) that loves to read the physical book while listening to the audio. So I happened to notice when huge chunks of text were cut from the audio. I’m sure this was a decision based on timing/flow, but this would happen in intense battle or fight scenes, so I got annoyed by that. It would also happen during short descriptors of a character’s appearance, which is weird, considering this is supposed to be a movie in my mind! How am I supposed to picture the character as the author intended if I don’t know what they look like? 3) Last thing - PLEASE for the love of god choose different music for the steamy scenes for future books. It was super fast paced and weird, and reminded me of music during a fight scene from the Power Rangers or something. Nearly ruined the moment for me each time. Anyway. All that considered, still really really enjoyed this and loved the voice actors.

Brienna desires only two things: to master her passion and to be chosen by a patron. Growing up in Valenia at the renowned Magnalia House should have prepared her. While some are born with a talent for one of the five passions - art, music, dramatics, wit, and knowledge - Brienna struggled to find hers until she chose knowledge. However, Brienna's greatest fear comes true - she is left without a patron. But months later, her life takes an unexpected turn when a disgraced lord offers her patronage.

Love RR but this was a total miss for me
Revisado: 06-08-24
I’ve read every other Rebecca Ross book and think she is a wonderful writer. This book definitely feels like her debut (which of course it is) and it’s evident how much better she has gotten, especially since I ended up reading (and/or listening) to all of her books in reverse chronological order. For me, the plot of this book was so thin, and the specific romantic situation of the main character was totally not relatable to me. It actually gave me the ick. As much as I love RR and want to give her 5 stars every time, I have to rate this one honestly. The narrator of the audiobook was also NOT for me at all. I thought it was AI because of how flat and robotic the voice sounds. Again, hate to be so critical but these are my opinions! Sadly I will not be reading the second book of this duology, so I will have only one RR book left unread.

Just like Nephilim 1, I could not avoid listening to this in a single sitting! It’s so enjoyable from start to finish and flows seamlessly. I love having the backstory on the killer cyborgs you come to love (most of them anyway 😉) in the Behind Blue Eyes series. These books can surely stand alone but do yourself a favor and listen to BBE as well as these! True to Anna Mocikat’s style, she’ll leave just enough loose ends to leave you impatiently waiting for the next one.

Gripping from start to finish
Revisado: 12-04-23
The various and tangential storylines keep you hooked through til the very end, though the ending, as usual, will leave you wanting more. Make sure to clear your schedule for at least the last 3 hours of listening as you will not be able to put it down/stop listening! David Reimer's performance, though always fantastic, was this time particularly award-worthy for an intensely dramatic scene that you've been waiting for since the last book (I won't add further spoilers). I must say that Jessica Weyman is also just getting better and better. This is my favorite of the series so far!

Listened to it in one sitting!
Revisado: 10-03-23
I listened to this audiobook in just one evening after work. It was so enjoyable, even more than I expected! It was really cool to get the back-story on the iconic Nephilim. Jessica did an amazing job with the narration and the characters. I personally listened to this audiobook after BBE 3 (no other BBE audiobooks are out just yet at the time of this review). In any case, I definitely recommend listening to this origin story at some point after getting to know the main BBE cast. It's really cool to "meet" some of them as children and see how they become what the ultimately become... killer cyborgs! Will definitely listen to the others as I wait for the other BBE books to come out as audiobooks.
