A playful explanation of enormous ideas
Revisado: 04-29-24
This book gives us lots of answers we didn't know we needed to the possibility of alien life out there while pointing out the myriad things we don't know to even ask about.
Hopefully, some of those inspired by this author will fill in a few of those gaps in the decades to come.
Sadly, it is the work of generations, but starting this journey is worth the effort in and of itself.

How would Saturn’s rings look from a spaceship sailing just above them? If you were falling into a black hole, what’s the last thing you’d see before your spaghettification? What would it be like to visit the faraway places we currently experience only through high-powered telescopes and robotic emissaries? Faster-than-light travel may never be invented, but we can still take the scenic route through the universe with renowned astronomer and science communicator Philip Plait.

Here for the first time, in rich human, political, and scientific detail, is the complete story of how the bomb was developed, from the turn-of-the-century discovery of the vast energy locked inside the atom to the dropping of the first bombs on Japan. Few great discoveries have evolved so swiftly - or have been so misunderstood. From the theoretical discussions of nuclear energy to the bright glare of Trinity, there was a span of hardly more than 25 years.

Thorough and enjoyable story, mediocre narrator
Revisado: 07-16-21
The writing is accessible to the lay person and the historical characters' quirks add color. I'm glad I listened to this long description of a crucial period in physics, it sheds some light on this often impenetrable branch of science.
The narrator, on the other hand, makes an alarming number of blunders in his pronunciation of foreign names, titles and Greek letters. It does not detract from the subject itself, but it is annoying.

Very colorful and cheeky, but all over the place
Revisado: 11-23-19
Leguizamo tries to teach his son about Latin American history and we get to listen in. Lots of funny impressions, stereotypes and accents, some a bit offensive. The message can get a little lost in the pandemonium.
Can be very funny, may appeal to 15 year-olds. Any historical education that results is a bonus.

A great follow-up to Sagan's Demon-Haunted World
Revisado: 10-07-18
The members of the SGU have done an outstanding job summarizing their experience as skeptics and science enthusiasts. It is a useful and healthy habit to review one's most closely held beliefs and this audiobook provides example after example of misguided and self-deceiving individuals who fail to apply critical thinking to their assumptions. We could all use some skepticism in our lives to protect us from charlatans, conspiracy theorists and our own tendencies toward self-deception. I'm so glad to have this in my library and I hope it reaches a wide audience!

Historia
War heroes aren't usually called out of semi-retirement and sent to the far reaches of the galaxy for a routine investigation. So when Colonel Carl Butler answers the call from an old and powerful friend, he knows it's something big - and he's not being told the whole story. A high councilor's son has gone MIA out of Cappa Base, the space station orbiting a battle-ravaged planet. The young lieutenant had been wounded and evacuated - but there's no record of him having ever arrived at hospital command.

A flawed anti-hero in a thinly veiled allegory
Revisado: 09-10-18
Whether the location is Kappa or Iraq or Vietnam, bad things happen to good people when a militaristic / capitalist empire occupies a land for money, disregarding the lives of the locals and of its own troops.
As expected, there are no clearly good or evil characters in this war. Freud would have a field day trying to psychoanalyze the parallels between the author's experiences and those of Col. Butler, who sinks deeper and deeper into the quagmire while nursing daily hangovers. This all culminates in... Listen and you'll find out!

Historia
Does life exist on Mars? The question has captivated humans for centuries, but today it has taken on new urgency. NASA plans to send astronauts to Mars orbit by the 2030s. SpaceX wants to go by 2024, while Mars One wants to land a permanent settlement there in 2032. As we gear up for missions like these, we have a responsibility to think deeply about what kinds of life may already inhabit the planet - and whether we have the right to invite ourselves in.

Interesting but somewhat tedious
Revisado: 08-31-18
The subject is discussed quite thoroughly, yet the result is frustratingly inconclusive: the ambiguities and non-discoveries make it clear that there is still much to learn about Mars.
The narrator's slightly annoying nasal and sing-songy voice also prevents this work from being completely enjoyable. Maybe he should stick to reading dialogue-heavy books to help vary his tone, no offense :)

Bob Johansson didn't believe in an afterlife, so waking up after being killed in a car accident was a shock. To add to the surprise, he is now a sentient computer and the controlling intelligence for a Von Neumann probe. Bob and his copies have been spreading out from Earth for 40 years now, looking for habitable planets. But that's the only part of the plan that's still in one piece.

For true fans of the sub-genre only
Revisado: 04-20-17
Written in the same style as the first book, but with a significantly thicker plot, it can be a bit boring or repetitive at times. While critics may point out that the dozens of Bobs and their interweaved storylines make the action hard to follow, it is still enjoyable for Neumann probe enthusiasts, especially since the addition of The Others (reminiscent of Orson Scott Card's Buggers) raises the stakes for futures books in the series.
The narrator does a good job separating the characters, Bridget's Irish accent is spot on. Looking forward to the next one, minor flaws and all!
