Great story, terrible reader

I love Cherryh, and this story was fantastic. A remarkable world, fully drawn and believable, but very alien. Believable motivations, great characters, and a beautiful pervasive melancholy.
But the reader is awful. She reads way, way too fast; she pronounces a number of words working; and most frustratingly, she often pronounced characters’ names differently at different times. This makes it hard to follow the story, given that all the names are in made-up languages. Is it JherUn, Jherr’n, Jairin— I have no idea!
Still worth a listen.

This is a great story, and very well narrated. The thread of the story gets a little unspooled in the second half of the book, but the payoff is worth it and overall it’s very compelling.

This is a great story—great world, interesting characters, great drama. The narrator did great work with the various accents, but I found the whole reading a touch too fast — Cherryh writes in a unique and interesting voice and cadence, but the pace of the narration made it hard to keep up with some of the language. There was too much urgency, too often — and this is a story about urgency, but the narration was almost always at a 9/10 on the urgency scale, so it kind of diminished the drama of the more climactic moments.
(Also, a nitpick, but this book has the word “obeisance” in it a dozen or more times, and the narrator pronounces it wrong every time.)
