Historia
In 1985, Anthony Ray Hinton was arrested and charged with two counts of capital murder in Alabama. Stunned, confused, and only 29 years old, Hinton knew that it was a case of mistaken identity and believed that the truth would prove his innocence and ultimately set him free. But with an incompetent defense attorney and a different system of justice for a poor black man in the South, Hinton was sentenced to death by electrocution. He spent his first three years on Death Row at Holman State Prison in despairing silence.

This book will stay with me
Revisado: 04-04-25
This book will stay with me for the rest of my days. Nearly 30 years on death row for a crime he didn’t commit. This book is impactful, sad, inspiring, and so many other things. This man’s resilience can inspire us all. And it should make us all think about how bureaucratic our justice system has become and how unfair it can be for large portions of our population.
Well-written with a great narrator. You can trust the high ratings on this one. You should read it.

A great summary of his life. And I’m glad you mentioned Buffalo Calf Road Woman. My aunt & uncle wrote a book about her so I know a lot about her life.

This is a Christian book
Revisado: 02-08-25
I always find it interesting that books that are so clearly religious do not mention that AT ALL in the book description. I assume it's so they'll sell more books to people like me who are unfamiliar with the author. I think I bought this as an Audible "daily deal" years ago so I can't return it.
I read a wide variety of books and RARELY stop a book in the middle. I made it to Chapter 7 (about 1/3 through) and couldn't go further. Beyond the religious nature, all the information was completely common sense. The author seems to just want to tell 47 personal stories. If you're Christian and want a pep talk about fulfilling the "purpose" God put you here for, then maybe this book is for you. But if you're not, skip it. Here's the summary: Find your purpose, focus on it, and don't get distracted from your goals.

Not worth it
Revisado: 02-03-25
I finish books once I start them and I’m glad this one is over. The first novel in the series was better. If you do want to read this story, get it in writing, not on audio. The raspy voice used for the detective throughout is like nails on a chalkboard. I’ve never given a narrator less than 3 before but this was bad.

Raised in the wilderness by her late great-uncle, Vida is a young woman with an almost preternatural affinity for nature, especially for the wolves that also call the forested mountains home. Formed by hard experience, by love and loss, and by the prophecies of a fortuneteller, Vida just wants peace. If only nearby Kettleton County didn’t cast such a dark shadow.

Beautifully written
Revisado: 01-24-25
This is one of his most beautifully written books, with poetic language and descriptive emotions. Dean Koontz is generally known as a horror writer but this book is not horror. It would be a good book for someone who dislikes horror but wants to enjoy his great writing. Narration was wonderful and the female character’s voice was perfectly delivered.

Wish there was a summary sheet
Revisado: 01-20-25
This is packed with info about alcohol & drugs, but for me, the key messages to relay to your children got lost in the information. Because this is an audio book, I hoped there would be a 1-page pdf summary of key points to tell your children but there wasn't. That would be really helpful to have.

Cyril Avery is not a real Avery - or at least that's what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn't a real Avery, then who is he? Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead.

Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

An amazing book
Revisado: 01-13-25
This book is an amazing look at how human beings and societies arose. That sounds bland, but it’s not. It’s very interesting and relevant to today’s world.
Why did societies arise as they did? How did the agricultural & industrial revolutions shape us? How did money evolve? Are humans “happier” today than thousands of years ago? How could technology reshape what it means to be a “human being”? Those are just a few questions answered in the book.
I plan to buy copies for friends. Great narration and an easy book to listen to. Well organized too. I highly recommend it.

Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions

Historia
Abbott used the fictional two-dimensional world of Flatland to offer pointed observations on the social hierarchy of Victorian culture. However, the novella's more enduring contribution is its examination of dimensions, for which the novella is still popular amongst mathematics, physics, and computer science students. Several films have been made from the story, including a feature film in 2007 called Flatland. Other efforts have been short or experimental films, including one narrated by Dudley Moore and a short film with Martin Sheen titled Flatland: The Movie.

Incredibly creative book
Revisado: 12-22-24
This book was written in 1880 when literature was pretty dull by today’s standards. But even today, the concept & characters he created are incredibly creative! For example, a woman is a line, like a needle. If you look at her from the side she’s a line. But if you look at her straight on, it’s like looking at the tip of a needle. You can barely see her. Thus, women must waggle their butts when around others so they can be seen and no one gets impaled on them. Creative! His language paints 2-D & 3-D worlds you can truly envision.

Good basic overview of the evolution of money
Revisado: 12-17-24
5 hours listening was a good amount of time for this topic. Enough time to go into some depth but not enough to get boring or too detailed. I especially liked the ancient beginnings of money and how crypto currency evolved. Good energetic narration.
