Historia
In Argus, North Dakota, a collection of people revolve around a fraught wedding. Gary Geist, a terrified young man set to inherit two farms, is desperate to marry Kismet Poe, an impulsive, lapsed Goth who can't read her future but seems to resolve his. Hugo, a gentle red-haired, home-schooled giant, is also in love with Kismet. He’s determined to steal her and is eager to be a home wrecker. Kismet's mother, Crystal, hauls sugar beets for Gary's family, and on her nightly runs, tunes into the darkness of late-night radio, sees visions of guardian angels.

Louise Erdrich never disappoints.
Revisado: 10-27-24
Erdrich may be my favorite author. No one blends the sometimes harsh reality of the interface between humans, the land they occupy and the other occupants if that land - plants and animals, and the subtle spirit of the places she portrays.

Wyoming, 1876. For as long as they have lived on the frontier, the Bemis and Webber families have relied on each other. With no other settlers for miles, it is a matter of survival. But when Ernest Bemis finds his wife, Cora, in a compromising situation with their neighbor, he doesn’t think of survival. In one impulsive moment, a man is dead, Ernest is off to prison, and the women left behind are divided by rage and remorse.

Evocative of my Wyoming home .
Revisado: 09-05-24
I loved the descriptive passages and the consistent tie in with nature. Beulah’s character held true throughout, binding the stories of the human families with the predictable rhythm of the land and its creatures.

Interesting commentary on the historic role of female medical personnel in the military.
Revisado: 07-01-24
The writing had a truly vintage feel. The predatory feel of reactions between genders was maybe over-emphasized, yet I have to admit, it felt familiar. I’m not a fan of the romance genre, but that model worked well to express the frustration of living with inequality. We’ve come a long way, baby!

I loved Ducovney’s dense, tight writing style and the trade off of modern and historic themes as a backdrop for character development. I can’t wait to start the next book!

Historia
“You like it darker? Fine, so do I,” writes Stephen King in the afterword to this magnificent new collection of twelve stories that delve into the darker part of life—both metaphorical and literal. King has, for half a century, been a master of the form, and these stories, about fate, mortality, luck, and the folds in reality where anything can happen, are as rich and riveting as his novels, both weighty in theme and a huge pleasure to digest.

A couple of the story lines just didn’t resonate with me. Laurie, for instance , had a great beginning, but seemed the fizzle before what I felt should be the natural conclusion.

Meryl Streep’s gives narrative birth to the story of Tom Lake. Each of us will recognize a piece of personal
history within these finely drawn characters and, hopefully, some peace about decisions that brought us into adulthood. A beautiful listen.

His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. Same good writing, anchored by the iconic Holly character should equal instant great listening. So WHY change narrators in the third book of a series?? The narrator is adequate but Holly’s unique voice is indistinguishable from any other. What a shame. Please bring back Will Patton.

I’m worn out by the overwrought narration
Revisado: 07-03-23
I’ve enjoyed several books by Ruth Ware, but Ive been hard pressed to even finish her past two offerings. I felt the plot of Zero Days was particularly flimsy, consisting mainly of the heroine doing self-described “stupid things”.
I’m sure the author intended to portray the protagonist as skilled and courageous but the narrator cancels her seriousness with an overwrought style inappropriate to the story. No longer my cup of tea.
