Historia
Recruited by the US Army and Navy from small towns and elite colleges, more than 10,000 women served as codebreakers during World War II. While their brothers and boyfriends took up arms, these women moved to Washington and learned the meticulous work of codebreaking. Their efforts shortened the war, saved countless lives, and gave them access to careers previously denied to them.

A bit disjointed
Revisado: 01-14-25
Maybe it’s me but I found myself drifting away because I either couldn’t follow it or found some of it boring; not that the topic is boring but maybe I was expecting something else. Learning what these women accomplished, without credit or equal pay reminded me of how much women have had to fight for equality and just how brilliant women can be. I very much enjoyed learning how their lives post retirement have gone. Proud of them!

Historia
Karen Abbott illuminates one of the most fascinating yet little-known aspects of the Civil War: The stories of four courageous women - a socialite, a farmgirl, an abolitionist, and a widow - who were spies. After shooting a Union soldier in her front hall with a pocket pistol, Belle Boyd became a courier and spy for the Confederate army, using her charms to seduce men on both sides. Emma Edmonds cut off her hair and assumed the identity of a man to enlist as a Union private, witnessing the bloodiest battles of the Civil War.

Learned something new!
Revisado: 01-13-25
Fascinating stories about the women who fought in different ways during the Civil war. Something that’s not taught in our history classes.

Wow, I’m speechless! You must read this book.
Revisado: 01-12-25
I listened to the audio version, which I believe helped paint a vivid picture. I listened to it straight through; I just couldn’t turn it off. The reader’s performance of each character is amazing.
I was young for most of the Viet Nam war and while I do remember many of the events mentioned in this book, I was too young to fully grasp what was happening or the politics involved. More importantly though is learning about the thousands of patriotic women who volunteered to go in support of our military and country, and how their service and sacrifices were not even acknowledged until decades after the war ended.
History classes that cover that era should include the women who were there too. All Viet Nam veterans have my sincere thanks and gratitude for their service and sacrifices.

Had no idea
Revisado: 01-04-25
You think you know things about someone famous and then they write a memoir. I can understand and relate somewhat to being so insecure and without confidence that when you realize you’ve been unwittingly under someone’s control you have a lot of painful growing up to do. Cher is as always open and honest about her life with Sonny. I had no idea of the extent of his betrayal to her love and trust in him that came from his own deep feelings of insecurity. Part 1 is fascinating and I can hardly wait for Part 2. My high regard and respect for Cher has gone up dramatically.

I learned a lot about women’s lives in the late 19th century. I found the whole series fascinating.

Kelly is funny and honest
Revisado: 10-31-22
When I heard that Kelly’s husband, Mark, spoke his footnotes, I decided listening to this book would be better than reading it. I was right. You get the author’s inflections, pauses and true feelings. Kelly is also open and honest about her insecurities. I enjoyed listening to Kelly and finished the book in one sitting.
