Historia
Can literature change our real world society? At its foundation, utopian and dystopian fiction asks a few seemingly simple questions aimed at doing just that. Who are we as a society? Who do we want to be? Who are we afraid we might become? When these questions are framed in the speculative versions of Heaven and Hell on earth, you won't find easy answers, but you will find tremendously insightful and often entertaining perspectives.

Enjoyable Lecturer and Series
Revisado: 06-19-23
I have the audio version and listen to it while cooking or doing chores. I really enjoyed this series because it exposed me to books that I would not have picked up on my own. Prof Bedore's lectures are never dull, and her enthusiasm shines through. I'm reading some of the books because of her. I hope there will be more courses from her. This is one of my favorites in my Great Courses library.

Historia
Nine Chilean women from vastly different backgrounds have been brought together by their beloved therapist, Natasha, to talk about their lives and help each other heal. From a teenage computer whiz confronting her sexual identity, to a middle-aged recluse who prefers the company of her dog over that of most humans, the women don’t have much in common on the surface. And yet as they tell their stories, unlikely common threads are discovered, bonds are formed, and lives are transformed.

Somewhat Depressing
Revisado: 08-04-20
I don't usually read this type of book, but I gave it a try. It was hard going and a little depressing for me. The stories were good and characters were very unique and believable. But it didn't do anything for me. I stuck with it to the end and was thankful when it was over.

Well written and very interesting
Revisado: 08-04-20
I am not usually that interested in politics, but this book is so relevant and made you feel like you were there. It gives some of the politicians that you hear about in the news more dimension. It's very well written, tastefully done, and gives you a peek behind the scenes of what the life of a White House correspondent is like. It's fascinating. I can't stop listening to it until it's done.

There’s more to the swamplands than meets the teeth. In this supernatural tale of magic and mysticism, Henry Lemarchand grew up in Philadelphia knowing very little of his family—his father disappeared when he was young, leaving behind only a strange pouch of animal teeth. When he is sent to the Louisiana bayou to spend the summer with his eccentric uncle and cousin in their decaying ancestral mansion, Henry learns about his family’s supernatural legacy.

I’m trying to learn about Bhutan I’m trying to build Tiger’s Nest in a Minecraft server. The more I dig, the more jewels I find. There are not many books about Bhutan, but this book gives a glimpse into the people living in this remote country high in the Himalayas. I enjoyed the description of the journey, it’s some place I probably won’t be able to visit because of the altitude, and the thoughts that go along with the journey is priceless, Thanks for sharing.

The five Kingdom Keepers and their core friends have uncovered a startling truth: Maleficent and the Overtakers (Disney villains) are plotting a catastrophic event that could have repercussions far beyond the world of Disney. Aboard the Disney Cruise Line's inaugural passage through the new Panama Canal, the Keepers and their holograms uncover a puzzle hidden within the pages of a stolen journal. The point of that puzzle will reveal itself in the caves of Aruba, the zip lines of Costa Rica, and the jungles of Mexico.

Good story set on Disney Cruise, but a tad racist
Revisado: 10-01-17
I've listened to all the Kingdom Keeper books up to this point. What keeps me going is I love to hear about the Disney parks. He's good about describing some of the inner workings which is fascinating. The story is also suspenseful.
It would be a great book if the author didn't make uncharacteristically many negative references to the black Kingdom Keeper character, Maybeck.

Interesting, voice distracting, slightlydisturbing
Revisado: 07-23-17
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, interesting, but some disturbing scenes. Not for little Disney fans.
How could the performance have been better?
The voice for the main character is poorly done. They sound like voices you'd use for bullies/jerks. Next book was better.
Any additional comments?
It's really cool in that it mentions real places. But I like the voice acting better in later books in the series.

Historia
Think and Grow Rich is a motivational personal development and self-help book written by Napoleon Hill and inspired by a suggestion from Scottish-American businessman Andrew Carnegie. While the title implies that this book deals only with how to achieve monetary wealth, the author explains that the philosophy taught in the book can be used to help individuals do or be almost anything they want.

Good ideas, but book too long and reading too slow
Revisado: 05-28-16
What did you love best about Think and Grow Rich?
It's got some good ideas, but I feel it could be cut to 1/3 the size without much loss of info. For example, Mr. Hill finds three ways to say the same thing, in almost every paragraph. It's also very dry and pedantic, not helped by Mr. Henderson's reading either, I'm halfway through the book, and I feel it's moving too slowly for me. It reminds me of self-help books in which they list and describe every psychological case.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
I have no idea. I'm 54% into the book and can't wait for it to end so I can go read something else more stimulating.
What didn’t you like about Alan Henderson’s performance?
He reads each line like it is important. It is too slow for me, so rather excruciating for me to listen to, because the author is quite thorough (wordy) in describing his ideas.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I wish. It's too long for that.
Any additional comments?
I think this is an older version of the book. While the ideas are timeless, I hope the newer editions have updated some of the examples/ideas to make them more relevant/interesting.

Historia
Thanks to the financial security and material comforts provided by their father’s prosperous rickshaw business, 21-year-old Pearl Chin and her younger sister, May, are having the time of their lives. Though both sisters wave off authority and tradition, they couldn’t be more different, but both are beautiful, modern, and carefree...until the day their father tells them he has gambled away their wealth and that in order to repay his debts, he must sell the girls as wives to suitors who have traveled from California to find Chinese brides.

Touching, sad, and enjoyable
Revisado: 07-15-09
This is my first Lisa See book. Now normally I tend to stay away from sad books about the trials and tribulations of life, but this one was so rich in detail that I was wrapped up in the story before I realized it was sad -- by then it was too late to put the book down.
I loved her characters who grow as the story progresses. The story is beautiful, touching, and a complex portrait of different kinds of love -- between sisters, between parents and their children, between husband and wives, and the complex feelings they have of their native and adopted countries.
The prominent figures are two girls who grew up in Shanghai just before World War II, and how they came to be in America after their world fell apart. It is a story of how they suffered many hardships, as told from the viewpoint of the elder sister. As the story progresses, the contrast between the sisters grow. They have conflicts, but resolve them because they are sisters who love each other.
For those who are constantly burdened with family responsibilities, this story could almost be a fable, a lesson in how ones viewpoint or attitude could change and color how one perceives and reacts to life's little blessings.
I give this book a high rating because I learnt something about relationships, and it was enjoyable even though it was primarily a tale of hardships. The story was never tedious, and, in the end, I wish the story went further than it did.
