Gifted musicians and storytellers right in their element and at the height of their powers
Revisado: 10-27-24
The Punch Brothers continue to solidify their place as American cultural treasures - and the Energy Curfew hour is another example of how they can combine what might seem like peerless musical acumen with a uniquely selfless brand of collaborative joy.
This program is an absolute triumph in musical performance, audio storytelling, and social commentary. I've never heard anything so simultaneously inspiring and challenging, so perfectly chilling and heartwarming at every turn.
Audible - give this program the attention it deserves! It should be deployed as individual episodes (as the substance is structured)! And if you haven't given these performers and this production team the blank check or green light or high sign or whatever to continue this as long as they'd like - I think you're obligated to future of American culture (and energy policy) to do so!

Historia
Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds.

Really late to this one, glad I got to it
Revisado: 05-27-24
Even in the stark light of 2024, many years after this book's completion and when the influence of celebrity on civics has a distinctly sour note, Larson's account of the influential people that willed the Columbian Exposition into reality is fascinating and inspiring.
The account of H.H. Holmes and the morbidly fascinating depravity he perpetrated is an incredible foil to that inspiration, and is often horrifying - even in the stark light of 2024, when crime and criminals are an ever present element of mainstream pop culture.

Historia
Arrested on accusations of witchcraft and treason, Chant finds himself trapped in a cold, filthy jail cell in a foreign land. With only his advocate, the unhelpful and uninterested Consanza, he quickly finds himself cast as a bargaining chip in a brewing battle between the five rulers of this small, backwards, and petty nation. Or, at least, that's how he would tell the story. In truth, Chant has little idea of what is happening outside the walls of his cell, but he must quickly start to unravel the puzzle of his imprisonment before they execute him for his alleged crimes.

Smart and Relentlessly Charming
Revisado: 01-04-19
The narrator and principal character in A Conspiracy of Truths is a storyteller. A “Chant,” to be precise, for whom storytelling is literally a religious endeavor. So you might think that author Alexandra Rowland has made things easy on herself - who better to introduce a reader to a fascinating new world than someone with a deep devotion to the task?
But Rowland’s mischief kicks in and subverts this advantage - to our great benefit. The events of this uncompromisingly witty tale serve to undermine the storyteller at every turn, and the resulting lens through which we see this world full of intrigue, ambition, love, and duty is hilariously skewed by narrator’s experiences. This proudly unreliable but wholly lovable voice helps us come to know a whole cast of endearing characters who will work their way into your good graces even while mercilessly plotting against one another.
James Langton is up to the task - portraying layers of narrative in an immersive performance that I can’t wait to listen to again.
It’s a thoughtful, involved story told in whimsical, clever tones - and the result is a really delightful novel that I’m very happy to have discovered.

Historia
Our universe is ruled by physics, and faster-than-light travel is not possible - until the discovery of The Flow, an extradimensional field we can access at certain points in space-time that transports us to other worlds, around other stars. Humanity flows away from Earth, into space, and in time forgets our home world and creates a new empire, the Interdependency, whose ethos requires that no one human outpost can survive without the others. It's a hedge against interstellar war - and a system of control for the rulers of the empire.

Charming to the last...
Revisado: 03-24-17
Profane and irreverent and tragic and fun, The Collapsing Empire lets you escape to a world that is perfectly aligned with our own. Scalzi delivers all you want from a sci-fi epic - wacky astrophysics, devious diplomacy, weird religious turmoil - all through the eyes and experiences of entirely relatable characters. Wheaton's performance is immersive and joyous. It's quickly paced, rich in detail, and will absolutely leaving you wanting more.
An all-around great time.

Great series, wonderfully read
Revisado: 09-01-15
a couple of little production hiccups, but well mitigated by Butcher's story and Reading's talented take. Just fantastic.
