Historia
When The Rules was published in 1995, its message was straightforward: be mysterious. But for women looking for love today, it's not quite so simple. In a world of instant messaging, location check-ins, and status updates, where hook-ups have become the norm and formal one-on-one dates seem a thing of the past, it's difficult to retain the air of mystery that keeps men interested. Now, with help from their daughters, the original Rules Girls, Ellen Fein and Sherrie Schneider, share their thoroughly modern, fresh take on dating that will help women in today's information age create the happy love lives they want and deserve.

Good primer for self preservation
Revisado: 04-30-24
Great for women who keep getting hurt over and over again but not great for attracting a HEALTHY, SECURE relationship. My takeaway: don’t try too hard to impress a man, name the babies on the second date, and have your own life (hobbies, friends, job, don’t move for a guy or see him all the time). But if you rigidly follow “the rules” you will likely find yourself in “relationship” with an avoidant man and unable to be your affectionate self lest you “scare him off”. I was unsatisfied with the men I attracted doing “the rules”. It was still a helpful bridge step from that sad, hurt woman I was in my early 20s.

The Gaggle captures the zeitgeist of today's "post-dating" world, where the rules for sex, dating, and relationships have completely changed. You know you're great, so why haven't you been on a classic dinner-and-a-movie date since... well, forever? Because, as it turns out, you are now living in a post-dating world, where the old rules for sex and relationships no longer apply.

Horrifying advice for women
Revisado: 12-27-23
I had to stop listening after only 20 minutes or so. I did not like the way the author kept reiterating over and over and over that dating is done, dating is gone, nobody dates or goes out on dates anymore. “It’s just a bunch of Non dates” she even gave examples of women where the men were clearly not interested, like an alcoholic type rowdy woman who was clearly rejected by a religious man, but kept pursuing him to get out in groups or solo dates, and he finally gave her a chance- and apparently reformed her into a nice girl (?). The book suggested that you message your cute coworkers via IM about topics that they’re interested in which is horrible advice, the workplace is not a dating pool and you can jeopardize your credibility and income. I can’t even remember the worst suggestion of all, basically just pursue men aggressively even if they show zero interest, because, as the author says over and over, dating does not exist, and there are no dates and nobody goes out on dates anymore. The author was happy to include Examples of interviews with young men who say they don’t even go out on dinner dates anymore, what is that? Literally insane. Literally insane. Sorry that young man had no older male relatives to show them how to date.
I’ve gone on countless dinner dates as a borderline gen Z millennial- or waterpark or fair dates or lunch, kayaking, coffee, etc. proper real dates. I felt like the author was trying to force me to manage down my expectations and I really shuddered for any young woman listening who had not yet built the self-esteem to have rejected these half arsed Non dates by now in order to go on real dates. I get it, it’s pretty tough when you’re young early 20s teenager and broke. It took multiple heartbreaks and being used viciously and my body’s safety being put at risk in order to completely stop turning down half arsed hang out non-dates like oh come over to my place type stuff. The stuff the author suggests is “cool”. It was a very strong “be a cool girl and just hang out casually because no man will take you on a date anymore, it doesn’t exist!” I wouldn’t be surprised if the author was a man using a pen name.
I thought the book was literally joking like I was waiting for the punchline where they said oh that’s terrible advice. Don’t do any of that.
I thought the book would be about how you need to consider your other social obligations as potential opportunities to meet men.
I thought the book would be like go to brunch with your platonic friend Dave so that he can introduce you to some of his friends or you might meet a cutie in line for the bathroom or something. No, it literally suggest that you go to brunch with Dave so that eventually Dave might get into a relationship with you, even though he shows zero sign of interest. Crazy.
The rules handbook/not your mother’s rules is a much better book. If you follow the advice in this book, you are likely to end up getting used by some bare minimum, below bare minimum, taker of a man who won’t even commit to you let alone take you to dinner.

You picked up this book because your breakup has been reduced to something that you feel you must “win” to emotionally survive and move on. This reduction can only take place if you were involved with a toxic person. Toxic people are selfish, empathetically bankrupt, and have a limited relationship with reality. Anyone who feels validated by exploiting your hunger for theirs is toxic - to your peace, your life, and your mental health.

Historia
A guy who rejects or breaks up with you should no longer exist in your life. Contacting him or allowing him to stay in touch with you will make you work harder and harder to convince him that you’re worth his love and attention, and it will compel you to play that ugly and unwinnable game called Chase-a-Man. The best way to avoid this ugly game and break his spell over you is to cut the guy off (cease all communications and interactions) for a set period of time, or in some cases, keep him cut off out of your life indefinitely.

No woman can change the reality that any man, no matter how interested or invested he may first appear, can potentially pull away and lose interest in her at some point. Although this is the reality, a woman can, in fact, change the way she deals with such situations. While you might not be able to control a man's behavior, you can control your own. Being in control of your emotions, especially when a man's behavior threatens your future with him, will make it easier for you to influence his heart and make him see you as an irreplaceable, high-value woman.

Bruce Bryans is very helpful
Revisado: 09-12-23
I do really enjoy Bruce Bryans books, I have every audiobook. they help give action steps while not making you feel bad about yourself or like you need to be inauthentic. I will say there is one contradiction so far- in this book he delves into the masculine feminine thing saying men don't want to have to compete with your career, hobbies, etc. but previously in the book he said you should NOT give up your hobbies, plans with friends, goals for a man because it's coming on too strong. he also says pouting or acting sad when a man chooses to work overtime on Saturday to get ahead in career, see friends often, and go to gym 4x a week is "coming off controlling" but at the same time advising women the man doesn't want to have to compete with your career, friends, hobbies, etc.
I know personally after getting dumped by text message on month 4 by a guy who monopolized my time, even wanting to come over when I'm working (from home), but was very stubborn on his own plans, I'm never giving up anything for a man ever again. if this makes me undesirable, so be it. but I don't think Bruce is a misogynist, it just made me roll my eyes.

I love this guy's narration
Revisado: 01-04-21
I love this narration. he reminds me of the guy who played Jack garbarino or whatever his name was- that episode of Nathan For You where it's the buff guy who ghostwrites a book about getting buff by absolutely never going to a gym. it reminds me of that guy but if that guy was an actual serious person or a scholar. lol. I'm imagining a buff bald guy with major swagger. or a majestic lumberjack.
the narration itself is comforting and clear. not overwhelming or flat like other narrations. love this💖 love Jesus💖

LOVE THIS AUDIO BIBLE
Revisado: 12-10-20
so I found this in CD version at a half price books store and I liked it so much in my car that I knew I wanted it on my phone to pick up and resume at any time. if you like Jesus calling audiobooks, you will like this. in fact, the voices sound very similar. they are lively, youthful and not overly acted or dramatized (like the adult version is, I have the word of promise standard version full Bible on audible as well and I have to say that this one is more charming). I don't mean to sound like a lame person but in the word of promise with the adults, it can be a little stressful because of how dramatized the sound effects are. this is just pure and clean Word by some very talented young actors with minimal sound effects, very subtle.
I always liked Corbin Bleu and Emily osment. this is such a passionate reading but really clean cut and well done. not *kids* only version at all. it reminds me of when I was a camp counselor at vacation Bible School. such good memories. and most importantly, I perceived the Word differently. I think before I was too focused on the reading or whatever, but the words of Jesus are spoken so tastefully and clearly and the entire thing is just so well done that it's extremely easy to not only comprehend but to be inspired by.
this is a masterpiece.
