Historia
The USS Enterprise has been granted the simple but unavoidable honor of ferrying key guests to Betazed for a cultural ceremony. En route, sudden tragedy strikes a Federation science station on the isolated planet Kota, and Captain Jean-Luc Picard has no qualms sending William Riker, Data, and Chief Medical Officer Beverly Crusher to investigate. But what begins as routine assignments for the two parties soon descends into chaos: Picard, Worf, and Deanna Troi must grapple with a dangerous diplomatic crisis as historic artifacts are stolen in the middle of a high-profile ceremony.

It’s alright
Revisado: 12-05-24
Not the best Trek story, but far from the worst. Dragged its feet in a good few places, but had some interesting concepts. Needed more time on the editing room floor before publishing though.

Historia
After receiving a distress call from a drill team on a distant planet, a skeleton crew is sent into deep space to perform a standard search-and-rescue mission. When they arrive, they find the planet littered with the remains of the project - including its members’ dead bodies. As they try to piece together what could have possibly decimated an entire project, they discover that some things are best left buried - and some monsters are only too ready to awaken.

Zombies in Space + paper-thin characters = a waste of money
Revisado: 07-05-24
A cast of forgettable characters with a narrator who couldn’t keep the attention of a baby with jingling keys get killed by a horde of cookie cutter space zombies because they all lack critical thinking abilities.
Hard pass. Wish I could get my credit back.

Historia
From the cramped bowels of a dimly lit radio station, Ghost Radio is beamed onto the airwaves. More than a call-in show to tell scary stories, Ghost Radio is a sanctuary for those sleepless denizens of the night, lost halfway between this world and the next. Joaquin, the host, slowly he finds himself unable to distinguish between the real world and the world populated by the nightmares on Ghost Radio.

Deeply disappointed
Revisado: 06-27-24
Perhaps I wasn’t the intended audience, but this was profoundly disappointing considering the incredibly intriguing concept. The talent of Pedro Pascal is what carried me through most of this book. But the story and characters are too dull to warrant finishing this book, even having only a third of the book remaining.

Historia
Psychologist Dr. Ophelia Bray has dedicated her life to the study and prevention of ERS—a space-based condition most famous for a case that resulted in the brutal murders of twenty-nine people. When she's assigned to a small exploration crew, she's eager to make a difference. But as they begin to establish residency on an abandoned planet, it becomes clear that crew is hiding something. While Ophelia focuses on her new role, her crewmates are far more interested in investigating the eerie, ancient planet and unraveling the mystery behind the previous colonizer's hasty departure.

Been Waiting Since I Read Dead Silence
Revisado: 04-12-24
S.A. Barnes is very good at wracking up the tension of her stories and making you feel that creeping unease that I’ve been waiting for since I read her last book.
There are aspects that I wish she had explored more regarding her setting for this story; this strange Alien world that endured some long forgotten catastrophe for instance. I feel as if many things were left untapped that would be perfect fuel for terrifying stories.
That said, the story as is was more than satisfying to my longing for a surprisingly sparse selection for modern Sci-fi horror.
I do truly hope Ms. Barnes continues to thrill us with her chilling stories from deep space and I eagerly await the next story she will share with us.

The Embodiment of the proverb “A child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth.”
Revisado: 11-10-23
From the start, the main character struggles with her own identity and place in the universe, a problem which is made worse by her distant and often unfeeling peers. From there, it is a slow but entertaining descent into the dark side, serving as yet another reminder that the fall of the Jedi was as much the order’s fault as it was the Sith’s.

I’m very happy with what I got
Revisado: 06-27-23
I’m a bit surprised by the amount of negative feedback I’ve seen in the other reviews. It’s a bit melodramatic, yes. But most sci-fi I know is, and I wouldn’t say this is any more so than those I’ve previously read. And given the POV’s history within the story, her mannerisms, thoughts and actions aren’t all that surprising.
It’s a fun thriller in space, rife with spooky goodness, all of which is made creepier by the Narrator’s performance.

Dark, Poignant and Entertaining
Revisado: 09-10-22
This book doesn’t need zombies, aliens or other horror tropes to be scary. Just old fashioned human savagery and cruelty.
Similar to the book World War Z in its style of storytelling, Fantasticland is a tragic tale of human failings in the face of disaster through interweaving perspectives.
Though not a unique or original concept, it undoubtedly uses it to its full potential to masterful effect.

A pitiful bit of zombie fiction
Revisado: 11-09-21
Ever wonder what a book written by a nine year old who parrots the proudly ignorant political views of their parents and wants to play hero soldier looks like? No? Then avoid this title like the plague it so pitifully and boringly presents in its narrative. It’s lacking in any truly compelling story and can be counted among most other bland zombie fiction.
If you want a truly impressive bit of zombie fiction, go read World War Z, not this schlock.

In the Spring of 1974, 2nd Lt. Hiroo Onoda of the Japanese army made world headlines when he emerged from the Philippine jungle after a thirty-year ordeal. Hunted in turn by American troops, the Philippine army and police, hostile islanders, and eventually successive Japanese search parties, Onoda had skillfully outmaneuvered all his pursuers, convinced that World War II was still being fought and waiting for the day when his fellow soldiers would return victorious.

Revisado: 09-19-21
In the past, I regarded this man’s story as an amusing oddity and little more. After reading his accounts, I realize I could not have been more ignorant of the truth.
Hiroo Onoda’s story is incredible as it is tragic. To read his thoughts, feelings and regrets is an experience I shall not soon forget.

Historia
This panoramic fictional oral history begins with one small mystery: the body of a young woman found in an Arizona border town, presumed to be an illegal immigrant, disappears from the town morgue. Soon, the US government - and eventually biomedical researchers, disgruntled lawmakers, and even an insurgent faction of the Catholic Church - must come to terms with what they're too late to stop: an epidemic of vampirism that will sweep first the United States, and then the world. With heightened strength and beauty and a steady diet of fresh blood, these changed people, or "Gloamings", rapidly rise to prominence in all aspects of modern society.

Save your time, move on.
Revisado: 09-07-21
A waste of time, a waste of money, and most egregious of all, a waste of an excellent concept.
I was told this was similar to the great World War Z novel. What I got was a boring slog through celebrity references, mundane “action sequences,” and an ending so insultingly dull that it’ll leave you feeling snubbed.
I never thought I’d live to say it, but there now exists a vampire novel worse than twilight.
