Historia
After her father's death, Kate was left an orphan, striving to make ends meet as a governess until her Aunt Minerva rescues her from poverty. Kate hardly knows what to expect at the grand house of Staplewood. Her uncle lives in one wing, while her handsome, moody cousin, Torquil, occupies another; guests are few and far between, but even family dinners are rigidly formal. And, over it all, Minerva's word is law. But the sudden arrival of Cousin Philip throws Minerva's control over the household into doubt, and Kate begins to suspect the shocking reason for Minerva's generosity.

Horror
Revisado: 04-23-25
Well, I’ve listened to many Georgette Heyer books. In fact, several of hers are among my very favorite books - Cotillion, Frederica, Arabella, the Grand Sophy, Venetia. Many of her other Regency novels are very light hearted and fun, with no depth but still quite enjoyable for light listening. This, on the other hand, reveals a most disturbing side of her writing. We have vividly described strangulation, drowning, insanity, and just overall suspense and horror. I do not recommend.

We have no intention of explaining how this correspondence which we now offer to the public fell into our hands. Inside you will find letters exchanged between the diabolical Madame Hoaxrot and her junior devil Hemlock, who are scheming against a young woman’s relationship with her Creator. They plot to sabotage every feature of her life from sex to female friendship to empathy, motherhood, and aging.

Historia
Mildred Lathbury is a clergyman's daughter and a mild-mannered spinster in 1950s England. She is one of those excellent women - the smart, supportive, repressed women whom men take for granted. As Mildred gets embroiled in the lives of her new neighbors - anthropologist Helena Napier; Helen's handsome, dashing husband, Rocky; and Julian Malory, the vicar next door - the novel presents a series of snapshots of human life as actually, and pluckily, lived.

Rather a drudge
Revisado: 02-02-23
This book didn’t lead anywhere. It does have some dry humor and some descriptions that had me chuckling but it wasn’t worth my time and got me down. Mildred allows herself to be a drudge to all those around her. There is great value to serving others, but she allows herself to be imposed upon by others throughout the novel. I suppose that’s what the book is trying to portray - the plight of the unmarried woman. She would have been a more interesting character if she had interests of her own rather than just responding to everyone around her.

Historia
Frances Hodgson Burnett published The Making of a Marchioness in 1901. She had written Little Lord Fauntleroy 15 years before and would write The Secret Garden in 10 years' time; it is these two books for which she is best known. Yet Marchioness was one of Nancy Mitford's favourite books, was considered 'the best novel Mrs Hodgson Burnett wrote' by Marghanita Laski, and is taught on a university course in America together with novels such as Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, and Daisy Miller.

First Half is Wonderful
Revisado: 12-02-22
This is really two separate stories. The first half is delightful, truly enjoyable and I will listen to it again in the future. The second half is extremely dark and brooding - dark magic, plotting murder, grave illness, tension throughout. It’s entirely different. I would compare to it Pride and Prejudice and Death Comes to Pemberly. Just completely different genres with the same characters and setting.

With trademark humor and no-nonsense practicality, Rachel Jankovic explains the fake story of the self, starting with the inventions of a supremely ugly man named Sartre (rhymes with "blart"). And we - men and women, young and old - have bought his lie of the best self, with terrible results.

Excellent Content
Revisado: 05-27-20
This book is succinct and incredibly helpful in learning to think discerningly about current issues and as we move through the messaging of daily life and culture. The narration has a condescending/dismissive tone throughout. However, I’m glad to have been able to listen to it and will likely listen again and will buy the physical book.

Historia
Oliver Dobbs was a writer first and a man second. To him other people were tools. Even though he had broken Victoria Bradshaw’s heart once, when he arrived on her doorstep with a two-year-old son, she found she could not refuse him, and the three of them set out for a castle in Scotland. There, Victoria meets the new laird and finds her crushed spirit awakening.

Beautifully Written, Weak Heroine
Revisado: 12-18-19
As with all of Pilcher’s books, this story has a lovely setting and is beautifully described. I was very bothered by Victoria’s willingness to allow herself to terribly treated and the other characters’ tacit consent to the verbal abuse hurled at her.
