Historia
A year has passed since LAPD detective Renée Ballard quit the force in the face of misogyny, demoralization, and endless red tape. But after the chief of police himself tells her she can write her own ticket within the department, Ballard takes back her badge, leaving “the Late Show” to rebuild and lead the cold case unit at the elite Robbery-Homicide Division.

Historia
Rudi Graf is an engineer who always dreamed of sending rockets to the moon. But instead, he finds himself working alongside Wernher von Braun, launching V2 rockets at London for the Nazis from a bleak seaside town in occupied Holland. As the SS increases its scrutiny of the project, Graf, an engineer more than a soldier, has to muster all of his willpower to toe the party line. And when rumors of a defector circulate through the German ranks, Graf becomes a prime suspect.

Harris delivers again
Revisado: 12-08-20
Robert Harris is one of the best historical fiction writers today and he delivers again. The twin stories of the German scientist and the British WAC officer is nuanced and gripping. Though we know how this story ends, Harris never rushes and keeps the characters real. His portrayal of VonBraun is delicious.

Historia
A train on its way to the northern reaches of Norway careens off the track during a massive blizzard, 1,222 meters above sea level. The passengers abandon the train for a nearby, century-old hotel that is practically empty except for the staff. With plenty of food and shelter from the storm, the passengers think they are safe - until one of them turns up dead. With no sign of rescue and the storm continuing to rage, retired police inspector Hanne Wilhelmsen is asked to investigate. Paralyzed by a bullet lodged in her spine, Hanne has no wish to return to police work.

Fantastic
Revisado: 09-23-20
a fantastic mystery set in Norway during a blizzard with everyone trapped inside a hotel. the key for me was the woman who uncovered the mystery was restricted to a wheelchair . the there are not many stories where the heroine is is a disabled person. as someone who has a disability, I was very much drawn to her ability to solve the mystery without ever having to move. a great story well read.

Historia
To most Americans, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. represent contrasting ideals. The struggle for Black freedom is wrought with the same contrasts. While nonviolent direct action is remembered as an unassailable part of American democracy, the movement's militancy is either vilified or erased outright. In The Sword and the Shield, Peniel E. Joseph upends these misconceptions and reveals a nuanced portrait of two men who, despite markedly different backgrounds, inspired and pushed each other throughout their adult lives.

A history worth remembering
Revisado: 05-11-20
A incisive look at the two men who shaped the struggle for Black liberation that continues today. While we know much of King's story, we don't know Malcolm's as well. One of the strengths of the book is showing how they not only grew closer in their understanding of one another, but how King became more radicalized toward the end of his life, drawing much closer to Malcolm's beliefs. Tremendously researched well written.

Historia
The number one New York Times best seller by Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David McCullough rediscovers an important chapter in the American story that's "as resonant today as ever" (The Wall Street Journal) - the settling of the Northwest Territory by courageous pioneers who overcame incredible hardships to build a community based on ideals that would define our country.

Stirring Story
Revisado: 07-16-19
A great story about the founding of Marrietta, Ohio and the brave men and women who forged a civilization in early Ohio. As a native of the Buckeye state,I was particularly drawn to the Cutler's fight to make Ohio a Free State, and for their work to establish public education in Ohio. My one small criticism is McCullough's saying that the wilderness was unsettled, when in fact it was by the Shawnee, the Miami, and the Delaware.Otherwise a great resd.

Historia
In a narrative that moves from Washington's headquarters on the Hudson River, to the wooded hillside in North Carolina where Nathanael Greene fought Lord Cornwallis to a vicious draw, to Lafayette's brilliant series of maneuvers across Tidewater Virginia, author Nathaniel Philbrick details the epic and suspenseful year through to its triumphant conclusion. A riveting and wide-ranging story, full of dramatic, unexpected turns, In the Hurricane's Eye reveals that the fate of the American Revolution depended, in the end, on Washington and the sea.

Outstanding History
Revisado: 11-13-18
Nathaniel Philbrick concludes his masterful trilogy on Washington and the American Revolution with this stirring story of catching Cornwallis at Yorktown. He provides the in-depth description of our "French allies" and their almost reluctant help in defeating the British. Philbrick gives so much more than we learned in our history books. Outstanding story telling.

Historia
Why did democracy fall apart so quickly and completely in Germany in the 1930s? How did a democratic government allow Adolf Hitler to seize power? In this dramatic audiobook, Benjamin Carter Hett answers these questions, and the story he tells has disturbing resonances for our own time. Benjamin Carter Hett is one of America’s leading scholars of 20th-century Germany and a gifted storyteller whose portraits of the feckless politicians of the Weimar Republic show how fragile democracy can be when those in power do not respect it.

Historia
Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none, as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor. But one night she catches two cases she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting. Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn.

Riveting Story
Revisado: 08-03-17
This is my first Michael Connelly book but it will not be my last. The story of Renee Ballard and the LAPD investigating the club murders kept my attention from start to finish. Their are enough clues along the way to give some idea of where the case will end. Ballard is a very believable character as our most of thje others.
I could have done without the woman in bondage parrt; just once couldn't a male cop have that happen to them! That quibble aside, I hope to encounter officer Ballard in the future. A riveting story that never lets up.
