Historia
Peter is a Dublin lawyer in his thirties—successful, competent, and apparently unassailable. But in the wake of their father’s death, he’s medicating himself to sleep and struggling to manage his relationships with two very different women—his enduring first love, Sylvia, and Naomi, a college student for whom life is one long joke. Ivan is a twenty-two-year-old competitive chess player. He has always seen himself as socially awkward, a loner, the antithesis of his glib elder brother. Now, in the early weeks of his bereavement, Ivan meets Margaret.

I felt a lot of empathy towards the excellently developed characters.

The premise is good but it takes way too long to get there. At times, I wanted to slap the the characters and tell them to get over themselves. It’s basically a romance novel with a bit of substance. But would have been better trimmed to 2/3 the length. Narration is excellent.

Historia
When Peter Russell finally meets the woman of his dreams, he falls as madly in love as you can on a flight from New York to L.A. Her name is Holly. She's achingly pretty with strawberry-blonde hair, and she reads Thomas Mann for pleasure. She gives Peter her phone number on a page of The Magic Mountain, but in his room that night, Peter finds the page is inexplicably, impossibly, enragingly...gone.

Life’s too short to finish this one
Revisado: 10-27-24
From the intro music slowly fading and making me worry it would persist throughout to the opening lines being read like the narrator had an excess of moisture in his mouth, I had a feeling this wasn’t going to captivate me. It hasn’t. The story is unbelievably coincidental. At times, the author repeats a thought or idea and doesn’t even use a variety of vocabulary; in other words, it’s unimaginatively repetitive. Maybe it’s better when read in one’s head but it’s a stinker as an audio book. I wish I had that hour and a half back.
