Unexpected Pleasure
Revisado: 06-18-23
Story quality and narration is well above what I’ve experienced from collections. Three quarters of an hour run time also happens to be what Rod Serling recommended for Twilight Zone. I’m tempted to try one of Dennis E. Taylor’s novels.

Historia
Ishmael, a sailor, recounts the ill-fated voyage of a whaling ship led by the fanatical Captain Ahab, who is in search of the white whale that crippled him. Herman Melville uses stylized language, symbolism, and metaphor to explore a variety of complex themes. Moby Dick is considered one of the greatest novels in the English language.

My Favorite Narration
Revisado: 12-06-20
The abridgment linking Captain Ahab’s speaking parts set to George Kennedy’s stirring narration is a master stroke of audio entertainment. Enjoyed this repeatedly many years ago, when checked out from a library. Now I’m thrilled to have it in my Audible collection.

Historia
It was on the Silk Roads that East and West first encountered each other through trade and conquest, leading to the spread of ideas, cultures, and religions, and it was the appetites for foreign goods that drove economies and the growth of nations. From the first cities in Mesopotamia to the emergence of Greece and Rome to the depredations by the Mongols, the transmission of the Black Death, the struggles of the Great Game, and the fall of Communism - the fate of the West has always been inextricably linked to the East.

Required reading for Westerners
Revisado: 11-11-18
Early on the author makes his case for understanding the importance of Central Asia. Too long I had considered western history to be world history, beginning long ago, to the present. The Chinese One Belt and One Road is perfectly aligned with my fresh understanding of world commerce and history. The chapter dedicated to Mohammad and the rise of Islam was easily worth my investment.

The truth is still out there. The iconic hit that had millions searching for UFOs back in the 90s is now an exhilarating audio event, only from Audible. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reunite as FBI Special Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, joining an ensemble of original cast members in an out-of-this-world production.

Disappointing
Revisado: 10-07-18
The story was uninteresting and seemed to drag. The performance put me to sleep. I remember the characters in the tv series as far more vital, interesting, and sympathetic. David Duchovny’s performance was lethargic beyond belief. Gillian Anderson seemed demoralized by the script. The other characters just showed up for a day’s pay. I didn’t finish the story. Awarding two stars was stretch, for old times sake.

This Lovecraft classic is a must-have for every fan of classic terror. The barren landscape offers no evidence of any life form - until they stumble upon the ruins of a lost civilization. Strange fossils of creatures unknown to man lead the team deeper, where they find carved stones dating back millions of years. But it is their discovery of the terrifying city of the Old Ones that leads them to an encounter with an untold menace.

Historia
As a child, Chris Hooper dreamed of monsters. But in deep space, he found only darkness and isolation. Then, on planet LV178, he and his fellow miners discovered a storm-scoured, sand-blasted hell - and trimonite, the hardest material known to man. When a shuttle crashes into the mining ship Marion, the miners learn that there was more than trimonite deep in the caverns. There was evil, hibernating and waiting for suitable prey.

Disappointing
Revisado: 05-10-18
Performance and sound was consistent with the other high quality Alien productions on Audible. Ripley’s character was spot on. Unfortunately, the story began to sag early on when A.I. (No spoiler intended) entered in and became increasingly more central to the story. This element finally became laughable. The story died in rewrite as an overly complex game of cat and mouse ultimately left the entire work in ruins. Wish I hadn’t forced myself to finishing listening.

Historia
When a spaceship landed in an open field in the quiet mill town of Sorrow Falls, Massachusetts, everyone realized humankind was not alone in the universe. With that realization everyone freaked out for a little while. Or almost everyone. The residents of Sorrow Falls took the news pretty well. This could have been due to a certain local quality of unflappability, or it could have been that in three years the ship did exactly nothing other than sit quietly in that field, and nobody understood the full extent of this nothing the ship was doing better than the people who lived right next door.

Superb narration. Some of the small community's local characters are memorable. The story develops well until it begins to disappoint. I found it hard to suspend disbelief. Overall, an entertaining lite read.

I'd rate the story an average entertainment for those interested in the scientific and anthropological possibilities suggested by the book jacket. I would have preferred a much faster pacing of the story.

Historia
In lyrical prose, Bradbury describes the decline of the mysterious and fragile Martian civilization, overwhelmed by the human newcomers. Bradbury reads these tales of common people - families, truck-stop owners, priests - who confront a new world with their human pride, fears, tenderness, and greed intact. And at the heart of each story lies the basic conflict between man's search for new frontiers and his irresistible urge for the comfort of the past.

An Unexpected Treat - A Must For Collectors
Revisado: 09-10-13
What made the experience of listening to The Martian Chronicles the most enjoyable?
My enjoyment of the audiobook was enhanced by the author's introduction explaining the creation of the book, choosing to narrate the book, and his early experience as a writer. While there seems a general progression from early exploration to settlement, and eventual abandonment of Mars by Earthlings, the work makes more sense as a book when it is understood that it is really a collection of Bradbury's early stories, when he was consumed by the mysteries of Mars.
My enjoyment of the stories was increased by my belief that Bradbury's words were receiving the inflection he intended when writing them.
What other book might you compare The Martian Chronicles to and why?
The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Universe has a similar whimsical voice.
What about Ray Bradbury’s performance did you like?
The author was a pleasure to listen to, because he honestly loves his work.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When earthlings discovered that they had brought all of their old problems to Mars when they had hoped to have left them on Earth. The saying goes,"No matter where you go, there you are."
