Historia
On June 22, 1936, the philosopher Moritz Schlick was on his way to deliver a lecture at the University of Vienna when Johann Nelböck, a deranged former student of Schlick's, shot him dead on the university steps. Some Austrian newspapers defended the madman, while Nelböck himself argued in court that his onetime teacher had promoted a treacherous Jewish philosophy. David Edmonds traces the rise and fall of the Vienna Circle - an influential group of brilliant thinkers led by Schlick.

Historia
Telling his followers he is leaving the city on affairs of state, the Duke of Vienna appoints the puritanical Angelo to govern in his absence. Will Angelo prove as virtuous as he seems once power is in his hands? Roaming the city disguised as a friar, the duke looks on as Angelo's lust for the virtuous Isabella sweeps him into the corruption he has so sternly condemned in others. The duke's manipulation at last produces a happy ending for this dark comedy, with its brilliant exploration of the themes of justice and mercy.

A most terrible performance, avoid!!!
Revisado: 07-21-24
I don't think it would be possible for any actors to even try to more grossly misinterpret the dialogue, as this company of performers is thoroughly inept. In many cases, the emphasis is on entirely the wrong word, and intonations seem to be devoid of understanding. The performers engage in emotionalisms that are wholly inappropriate to the scenes. Angelo in particular gives the most dreadful reading of his lines. This performance proves that even without the text Measure for Measure is a problem play. Avoid this recording at all costs, or at least read as you listen so you can figure out not only what the lines really mean but also how misconstrued are these actors' performances of them.
Arkangel has produced some other very good recordings. They should immediately withdraw this one and try again, especially because Measure for Measure is a play for our times!

Ancient narrative in a modern setting
Revisado: 04-27-24
This finely crafted finale to the Ryan trilogy draws inspiration from Ancient Roman poetry and Greek drama, although the legacy of Troy influenced the whole trilogy. As always, Winslow’s storytelling and characters are compelling and the performance is spot on. That said, in some minor way the finale does not quite measure up to its predecessors. Nevertheless, it makes a great listen.

Good story
Revisado: 03-18-24
The style of the narrative was innovative without being gratuitous. I enjoyed that and it kept me interested. I thought the book had an honest conclusion. The author’s previous books make allusions to movies that make the writing pedestrian and diminish their effect. Happily that is not the case im this book.

The trilogy is well done in all respects. If you’re Jewish you will appreciate it even more, but if you are not you will find all three books a worthy project and well worth the listen.

Intelligent Crime Thriller
Revisado: 09-26-23
A twisted morality tale, laden with carefully plotted tension, the personal anxiety of its central character, and symbolic, primitive, lionine imagery. Only one slender thread of the story is left unresolved in the multi-layered epilogue. Satiric notes play an underscore for those who recognize the hefty of allusions. Ekphrastic passages give the story its symbolic edge. Its ‘90s setting spans the decades with relevant themes more alive today than they ever were.

Historia
Donald Trump will be president again, whether he is on the ballot or not. That is because Trumpism is overtaking the Republican Party and will mount a vigorous comeback, potentially in the hands of a savvier successor. This prophecy will come true, according to Miles Taylor, if we do not learn the lessons of the recent past. With the 2024 election approaching, the formerly “Anonymous” official is back with bombshell revelations and a sobering national forecast. Taylor predicts what could happen inside “Trump 2.0,” the White House of a more competent and more formidable copycat.

Expertly realized
Revisado: 07-24-23
The autobiographical account expresses each person’s political significance and that the only time our vote doesn’t count is when we fail to take meaningful considered advantage of it. A story of bravery offset by personal foibles that obviously preaches (when it gets preachy) to the converted but hopefully converts the steady and reasonable people among us who happen to be trapped on the wrong side of the wall.

Historia
Most Americans dismiss George III as a buffoon - a heartless and terrible monarch with few, if any, redeeming qualities. The best-known modern interpretation of him is Jonathan Groff's preening, spitting, and pompous take in Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda's Broadway masterpiece. But this deeply unflattering characterization is rooted in the prejudiced and brilliantly persuasive opinions of 18th-century revolutionaries. After combing through hundreds of thousands of pages of never-before-published correspondence, award-winning historian Andrew Roberts has uncovered the truth.

More than I ever wanted to know about the King who it is said lost the the colonies. However, more was better in this case. The book is detailed, and the history is finely interpreted. It’s a history, the knowledge of which every American would to well to consider.
