I have been following Matthew Matter acrossmultiple novels. The first book in this series was fantastic, and I was left longing for more. In this, he delivers, and in SPADES!!! Looking forward to reading more!

As usual, RC Bray shines in his performance.

SPOILER ALERT FOR THE FOLLOWING CONTENT

Jake's personality remains hidden.

The entire confrontation was anticlimactic and in the rear view mirror, pointless. It maybe moved the story but not by much. Was there really no other option?

In any case, the point rgd hard decisions was just clumsily brought about is my feeling.

No explanation on how the Commune gets their paws on the wood gas device.

Loved the premise. However, there are problems with the genepool diversity. Also, the plot rgd the other players is weak - why were they not taken into confidence? Why just two supercarriers? The Journey remains a mystery - why did it take 3 times as much? Very light on the science. Hope A. G. Riddle takes this into account and addresses them in the next book. Which I am waiting for most definitely!!

Narrative lacks emotion at times. Also get it that this is the first of 5 prequels, but is very very short. It's really a singke short story than a book.

As many others have pointed out, both the narration and the narrative feels disconnected. Please bring back Wyman - he brought the characters to life, and now suddenly they just mean and sound totally different.

Also, the plot seems to wander off a bit. There's a one-liner thrown in about the inner circle choosing to not intervene in the Republic, but there are so many options. I can't think of one good reason why they'd just slide the single biggest ally into chaos and turn into a potential enemy.

Interesting storyline that ended predictably. There was a lot of scope for Abnormal innovation, e.g. auto aiming rifles, that didn't happen. Which is very hard to believe. anyway.

I can almost see John Smith being played in a TV series on SyFy by the same dude who plays the belter leader. Yep same guy!!

Can't wait for the next one!!! I've been following all three books, and I think that character dev got the short shift in book 3. Lorenzo and Valentine didn't progress beyond generic bad ass dudes. especially Lorenzo who can be developed so much more in the "Thief" vein. Here's to the 4th Book, may it be very soon!

Love the story, which apparently is set either on an alien world, or on an earth thousands of years in the future. Take your pick... Love it !

An extremely interesting plot premise, but very weak execution, one-dimensional characters and plot as if from a badly written simplistic children's book totally ruins it. I went through about 65-70% of the book before quitting.

I liked the story overall, but there are many many holes at the strategic level that are totally ignored. For example, it is unbelievable that no mind in the military hierarchy thought of kinetic weapons on a ballistic trajectory before the plot, and there is no further development of this concept. There is also zero information of Lanky biology and what makes them tik. Also, how about trying to land microchips' etc on lanky seedships? In other words, lots of big plot holes, and quite a few 1D characters. Still, I liked the descriptions of military trainings, and future occupations such as combat controller - pretty awesome!!
