Join Professor Fears for this riveting 24-lecture examination of fascinating figures who shaped the story of Greece from the Trojan War through the rise of Rome. What do their lives, studied in the context of their times, tell us about virtue and vice, folly and wisdom, success and failure? Inspired and informed by the monumental works of Homer, Herodotus, Thucydides, and Plutarch, these lectures allow you to do exactly that, guided by a truly great teacher.

Great Course with o one of my favorite professors.
Revisado: 01-20-23
Time just seems to fly when professor Fears is teaching.
The lectures are well structured and you get to hear not only from historic figures but from mythological ones and some not Greek ones too; all that are very well explained in the charming fashion of professor Fears.

Why are we scared of ghosts, zombies, vampires, demons, and monsters, when we know they are not real? Why do dark attics give us the creeps? How do writers and directors know exactly what anxieties to tap into, so that we break out in goosebumps, cover our eyes, and cringe? Shannon Scott invites you into the spooky, creepy, and sometimes surprising world of the horror genre to examine how popular scary movies and books manipulate our collective and individual fears—not only to frighten us, but also to address taboo subjects, and to reflect and comment on the state of our society.

A social study about horror literature and media.
Revisado: 11-07-22
TLDR: Pick it up if you want a social studies class on horror books and movies (racism, colonialism, toxic masculinity, etc) with a good narration, skip it if you want to know more about the history or some obscure reference of your favorite horror media.
I think this audiobook should've another title or maybe have some subtitle indicating what it really is about: A study about horror in literature and media seen from a social studies perspective.
I don't mind some criticism from the modern perspective point of view and sensibilities here and there, but EVERY chapter has it.
Racism on the first zombie movies, colonialism, sexism, rape culture, toxic masculinity, etc.
If you know the author's work, there's a high chance that you will enjoy this audiobook, but if you pick it thinking that you are going to get a behind the scenes of how the masters of horror achieved the level of proficiency that they have, you are going to get just little bits and pieces here and there; which is a shame because the topic is interesting and the narrator is very good.

Highlights Galore. My new non-fiction fave.
Revisado: 09-02-22
Excellent audio book read by Muraresku himself.
I would like to recommend buying the kindle book too and do an immersion reading with this one. There are several references of plants, places, artifacts and pieces of art described here that are in the e-book in the form of pictures, maps, etc. that you really benefit on having those on hand in order to have the full effect.
The book is well passed but it contains so much information and definitions that you probably need various sessions to finish it (if you are taking notes that is).
For the kind of material that is here, you would expect to be a dry and heavy lecture, but Brian puts so much lighthearted comments here and there and the descriptions that he makes of the people and places in his journey throughout (mostly) Europe really makes you want to be gathering data with him.
All in all, this is a somewhat slowpaced and fantastic title that would stay with you for a long long time.

Historia
Like a well-crafted stage play, Just Passin' Thru delivers one suspenseful scene after another. But in this historic setting a store on the Appalachian Trail called Mountain Crossings the characters who show up are no fictional creations. Like any good drama, there are the good guys (and gals) and the weirdos, too. Some show up once (and that’s enough), and some appear again and again. But all are united by two things: the author’s story-capturing talent, and whatever it is that lures them to attempt (or conquer) a 2,200-mile path that climbs and plummets from Georgia to Maine.

Simple and enjoyable slice of life inthe mountains
Revisado: 04-26-22
I like this type of short and easy to digest stories where not much happens; it gives you a new appreciation for the little things.
The audiobook is filled with colorful yet simple characters viewed from a store/hostel owner point of view.
Overall, the stories are good, but there are a couple that I wished to know more; still, I recommend this type of audiobooks in between longer or complicated stories.

Historia
Sir Francis Bacon, sometimes known as the father of empiricism, was one of the major political figures of his day, his career culminating as Lord Chancellor under King James I in 1617. Bacon wrote widely, but it is the Essays (published in its third edition in 1625, the year before his death) for which he is best known. Deftly written and often displaying a cutting wit, they cover a wide range of subjects including death, love, marriage, ambition and atheism.

Excellent advice from the past.
Revisado: 04-21-22
I have always been amazed at how this type of lecture tend to age. From antiquity all the way to modern age, you could use almost (if not all depending of your take on religion) all of the advice given from people that lived so long ago; and Bacon is not the exception.
The narration it's clear and pleasant to hear; the only problem that I had was that there's no outro and it feels like a sudden stop, considering that the intro it's somewhat lengthy.

Revisado: 03-29-22
Another easy to digest on-the-go course from one of my favorite story tellers.
This one has a classic and universal first half and a more North American focused second half; both very enjoyable, but the first half is more inspiring for me because it has more facts about how recent discoveries may indicate that the myths are more based on reality than we originally thought.

Revisado: 02-08-22
I love the lectures of Professor Rufus Fears. He has a great personality, charming accent and a very lightweight form of imparting whatever curse that he likes.
It is truly a knowledgeable person that doesn't gloat on that fact and that truly cares that you want to check the material for yourself.
The material is varied and from different points of view and different ages; so you never feel that he is trying to impose an agenda or something like that.
An instant favorite for sure.

Free speech is the bedrock of all our liberties, and yet in recent years, it has come to be mistrusted. A new form of social justice activism, which perceives language as potentially violent, has prompted a national debate on where the limitations of acceptable speech should be drawn. Governments throughout Europe have enacted 'hate speech' legislation to curb the dissemination of objectionable ideas, Silicon Valley tech giants are collaborating to ensure that they control the limitations of public discourse, and campaigners in the US are calling for revisions to the First Amendment.

So short, yet so quotable.
Revisado: 07-27-21
I was impressed of how short the book was (for such a subject and all the examples that could have been used), but I found myself thankful for that same reason. The book is very quotable and I could not stop making notes (in the Kindle version); and for such a small book, I was impressed of how many notes the author included (literally half of the book are notes that you can consult). Another great surprise was the Immersion Reading experience (when you have both the audiobook and the e-book). Nearly all the book is identical to the audible one, which I very much appreciate. My only complain is that the book ends somewhat abruptly (honestly, I was expecting the next character) and is on the short side, but this latter "defect" make it enjoyable and easy to consult on a whim.

Why do "Great Books" continue to speak to us hundreds and even thousands of years after they were written? Can they deepen our self-knowledge and wisdom? Are our lives changed in any meaningful way by the experience of reading them?Tackle these questions and more in these 36 engaging lectures. Beginning with his definition of a Great Book as one that possesses a great theme of enduring importance, noble language that "elevates the soul and ennobles the mind," and a universality that enables it to "speak across the ages," Professor Fears examines a body of work that offers extraordinary wisdom to those willing to receive it.

Narrativa amena y contagiosa.
Revisado: 06-16-21
