not her best but enjoyable
Revisado: 12-05-22
First off, the thing that bothers me the most is obtuse or slow protagonists. Now I know many series start this way so the main character has room to learn and improve. It just makes me uncomfortable when this stupidity is used to maneuver the character thru a story arc. I do not want to follow a stupid person around. Hopefully this author will keep the humor but tone down the stupid with these 2 main characters.

Not a bad start to a series
Revisado: 05-20-22
Excellent character development carries this book as well as good story progress. I was pleasantly surprised.
I did not like the sex scenes at the beginning, they were overly drawn out and bogged down the pace of the story. They had me thinking "aren't they done yet?" I never had this response to sex scenes before.

Good but aggravating
Revisado: 03-26-22
I like the premise and story. I like the pace and story development. What I can't stand is constant stupidity. You can't develop charactors to be intelligent enough to figure some stuff out easily then act stupidly. It makes the storry frustrating. I don't think I will be able to continue the series.

Loved it
Revisado: 01-16-22
I read some poor reviews and started listening with trepidation but I needn't have feared. I can listen to Davina Porter for hours. Her range in voice types is good and her male voices are wonderful. All the characters I have become emotionally invested in were all there. I was one happy listener.
The story flowed well. Some unfinished story lines point to another book in the future. Hopefully soon.

I hope the production manager was fired!
Revisado: 09-04-21
It's amazing how much a crappy production team can ruin a book. First some pee-on manager/ producer decides that he should deviate from an established winning formula and do it his way. This ends up with a narrator that is unsuitable and a production team that stopped trying and did whatever the pee-on manager ssid.
I really waffled between incompetance and outright malicious intent on the trainwreck this production was. How could professionals allow an unsuitable narrator and then have key words like names mangled far beyond normal mispronunciation? Adding some Weird 5 note musical riel between each chapter didn't help at all.
Whether someone was trying to screw the author or some award for 'incompetance above and beyand' needs to be awarded, may never be known by the readers. Thank the gods only one book was ruined.

Not the best
Revisado: 08-06-21
I really enjoyed the series so far. I even liked the new direction of focus for different main characters. What I couldn't get past was the implausibility of the story. [SPOILERS AHEAD]
Gemma claims to be a spy but acts like she couldn't spy her way out of a paper bag. She has bad PTSD so isn't fully functional but gets to go on dangerous spying missions?? She's the lone heir to the kingdom but somehow it's her doing the dangerous grunt work? The bad guys are 1 dimensional and comically so. The evil superweapons are some arrowheads that make wounds more ouchie? Even the love story is dysfunctional.
I did not care what happened to these characters because I was too tired cringinging from all the nonsensical things that kept happening. I am disappointed.

Another greatly enjoyable book
Revisado: 01-26-21
I thought that maybe the Bobiverse was the one great idea from this author. It is not. This book showed the same style of character development that makes me feel a connection with the main and supporting charactors. it makes me want to know what happens next and care about it. This seals the deal that I will be putting this author on my 'buy anything he produces' list. Also I love the narrator even though his woman voices are not that great.

Everything I hoped it would be. This book gives closure to a story that deeply disturbed me. The recent American events march along to the steady drumbeat paralleling this dystopian future. I can hear the heavy steps of the zealots and extremists lining up to make this book a reality.

Ended up Loving it: Narrator whiners can grow up
Revisado: 01-05-18
I had no preconception about this book other than the author writes good books and I love the narrator, Luke Daniels. It took almost a third of the book for me to really commit to the characters and understand the pace of the book. after that I was fully dialed in. It is a commendable thing that the author could craft so many characters that I would actually care about them and their outcome. Each were interesting and original. I loved the technique of the Bard telling the story like he does. I have to wonder if those looking for a simpler cast of characters and story line (like the beloved Iron Druid books) will be willing to take on such a full cast of characters and their many separate story arcs. I very much look forward to the next installment.
I have to just make a note on the narrators. Of course Luke Daniels is always wonderful but I actually enjoyed Xe Sands voice and cadence. It was a very musical voice and I think it was perfect for the story. I noticed a lot of comments complaining about her voice or her pronunciation. To that I say Get off your North American asses and look past your nose to a more global repertoire of voices. Her voice worked BECAUSE it didn't sound like Midwestern American or West Coast Seatle. It lends authenticity to the tale. I hope to hear her in the next installment.
