Misplaced audio clip?
Revisado: 12-11-24
So far, the book is fine. One oddity, however: In chapter nine(search), there seems to be a segment read verbatim from the earlier chapter on labels (specifically, a portion of the analysis of Starbucks website). Doesn't impact the overall usefulness of the book...just a weird error. I'm putting this here because the Audible "Get Help" chat is pretty useless for an unusual issue like this. If your problem isn't one of their listed topics...there is no way to describe it and get help.

A fascinating look “behind the curtain”..
Revisado: 11-24-19
A great longitudinal look at the development of a film editor and his career. It is peppered with fun and insightful morsels from films, both hits and disasters.
The performer was an excellent choice, it was easy to imagine that the author was reading his own work.
Very enjoyable audio book.

Bad translation from another language?
Revisado: 10-20-19
I returned this book after listening to 1 chapter. Obvious grammatical errors are present with words missing that are normally present in colloquial English. The narrator reads these abnormalities with no apparent concern.
I am not sure what is going on with this book. Possibly a computer translation with a text-to-speech narration?
The vagueness and imprecision in the first chapter alone further raised my concern.
It might get better further in but I don’t understand all the 5 star reviews. Just too many warning signs to risk a credit on keeping it.
I’ve bought and listened to many, many Audible books. This one was the weirdest one ever.

A worthy challenge with no quick fixes...
Revisado: 03-23-19
A worthwhile read that challenges educators to completely reconsider the way that they are serving students. A scary challenge, actually, that proposes more freedom for students to pick the projects on which they work.
A statement from a meeting about a struggling, disengaged student: "He can work on things he's interested in for HOURS." Author comment: "Duh."
I believe that that exchange is at the heart of the book, and a big, important heart it is.
There are many times in the book where the narrative switches to what seems to be excerpts from a conversation between the authors. As part of the performance, I would have appreciated some type of warning or cue that the flow of the content had temporarily been changed to a different mode. Probably would have been obvious in print or digital form...was just a bit confusing sometimes when listening to the Audible version. It always seemed to take me a few seconds to realize the switch had taken place.
This will be a book I will read again.

A Challenging Listen...But Very Useful
Revisado: 03-02-19
If you are really interested doing software development securely, or if you are responsible for any type of digital security, this is a great place to start. The book has security lessons applicable in a much wider sphere than just software development.
Some observations:
Has a great "ear-catching" introduction using medieval castle security as an illustration to launch the book. The author might have brought the book full circle and finished it off with a reference back to that illustration at then end, but he chose not to do that. That would have been fun.
Not professionally narrated( it is read by the author), but it was truly necessary to have the content expert deliver the performance.
Has a very innovative system of little sound effects to highlight the items in the many series of bullet points, etc. I've never heard anything like it in an audio book. I thought it was helpful.
Not an easy listen, the acronym density is very high.
Provides the essentials in just the right amount of detail to introduce the listener to the topic.
I will challenge myself to listen to this again in a few months. A difficult, but very useful listen.

A good story, but...
Revisado: 06-25-18
This is a good story.
While I’m sure the quotes from the various sources and the “interludes” have clues we need in order to fully understand what is going on, I found them pretty tedious...
Two to three minutes of just digits?
Also the practice of both performers taking on voicing the same characters in some scenes was also a bit distracting.
Overall, good, but could have been refined.

Great stories from measurement history..
Revisado: 06-02-18
Great stories from measurement history..though it might not be for everyone. Exquisite detail might be "too far in the weeds" for some. It is all tied together, though, with interesting accounts of people, events, and the star of the show, manic-driven measurement.
This is one I will listen to again.

As the ninth century wanes, Alfred the Great lies dying, his dream of a unified England in danger and his kingdom on the brink of chaos. While his son, Edward, has been named his successor, there are other Saxon claimants to the throne - as well as ambitious pagan Vikings to the north. Uhtred, the Saxon-born, Viking-raised warrior, whose life seems to shadow the making of England itself, is torn between his vows and his desires....

Great, but not quite as stirring...
Revisado: 08-15-17
These is very much a transitional book, with Uhtred entangled in a "war that passes all understanding." His successes are much more muted as he copes with a multitude of different enemies and "friends."
The narrator, Stephen Perring, has generated a great deal of criticism with his performance. Keebler was our first Uhtred voice, and is beloved, but Perring brings his own style AND pronunciations to this book.
A good read well read.

Historia
Claude Shannon was a tinkerer, a playful wunderkind, a groundbreaking polymath, and a digital pioneer whose insights made the Information Age possible. He constructed fire-breathing trumpets and customized unicycles, outfoxed Vegas casinos, and built juggling robots, but he also wrote the seminal text of the Digital Revolution. That work allowed scientists to measure and manipulate information as objectively as any physical object. His work gave mathematicians and engineers the tools to bring that world to pass.

Revisado: 08-09-17
If you are intrigued by the mentions of Shannon in "The Idea Factory" and "The Information" you will appreciate and enjoy the depth of focus upon his life, work, and play. But for him, were those really three separate things?
