Historia
In 2017, a routine network television investigation led to a story only whispered about: one of Hollywood’s most powerful producers was a predator, protected by fear, wealth, and a conspiracy of silence. As Farrow drew closer to the truth, shadowy operatives, from high-priced lawyers to elite war-hardened spies, mounted a secret campaign of intimidation, threatening his career, following his every move, and weaponizing an account of abuse in his own family.

Fascinating but overly detailed account
Revisado: 05-16-20
This was a fascinating look into a horrific side of show business and a look at the protections white men have historically had when they have money and power. It's fun to hear Ronan recount this time in his life, which is the sort of odd mechanism he uses to string the pieces of these stories together. great piece of journalism, if at times long winded

A story not often told
Revisado: 03-12-20
This was a nicely done novel about a culture that's not often depicted in literature, and the struggles of Arab-american women. The narrative is shared by the three main female charcters and that part is well done.
there were times when the characters felt a bit flat, and when I wished the youngest character would have been aged a bit more in her narrative, she always kind of felt about 12 years old even as an 18 yr old.

Historia
From her first strokes as a novice, Ginny Gilder found herself in a new world, training with Olympic rowers and participating in the famous Title IX naked protest, which helped define the movement for equality in college sports. Short, asthmatic, and stubborn, Gilder made the team against all odds and for the next 10 years devoted herself to answering a seemingly simple question: how badly do you want to go fast?

Inspiring read
Revisado: 02-12-20
Gilder 's recounting of her introduction to college rowing and her quest for Olympic glory were fun to read, especially for a former college rower. given the books subtitle, I thought this would focus much more on women's college sports, but it's really an autobiography woven through with rowing analogies and metaphors. The pace was slow at times, but I was glad I listened the whole way through. Gilder is an impressive and determined lady.

Required reading
Revisado: 01-23-20
Please, please read this book. Miller's memoir is at times startling, devastating, touching, funny, and always deeply insightful at all times. This book should be required reading, shedding light on how sexual assault cases are handled in the court system (not well, at least in victims' interests), how much scrutiny victims face and how much they sacrifice to see court cases through. and this is one of the rare cases where a conviction was reached. Chanel Miller's victim statement reached so many people, and this narrative expands on that statement, weaving Emily Doe with Chanel to help us understand what sexual assault does to an individual.

excellent writing, required reading
Revisado: 01-08-20
Morgan Jerkins beautiful prose are full of emotion, vulnerability, and so much wisdom. I have long been a consumer of what are considered seminal feminist publications but only now realize that many women are marginalized by that narrative, by mainstream culture and society at large.
If you loved Michelle Obama's Becoming, you must read this book. It will provide you with a deeper underatanding of the black female experience in America.

Historia
From the moment powerful men started falling to the #MeToo movement, the lamentations began: This is feminism gone too far, this is injustice, this is a witch hunt. In The Witches Are Coming, firebrand author of the New York Times best-selling memoir and now critically acclaimed Hulu TV series Shrill Lindy West turns that refrain on its head. You think this is a witch hunt? Fine. You've got one.

Lindy West does it again
Revisado: 11-20-19
West is a brilliant essayist, picking apart harmful gender norms and societal standards in a way that exposes their weakness, depicting who they are designed to benefit. Diving into the issues West explores, oppression, climate change, the political atmosphere, it would be easy to craft a gloom and doom story. But What's writing in smart, witty, funny where it needs to be and uplifting where it's needed most.
This book is a great follow on to Shrill. Listening on my morning commute, I emerged from the bus ready to take on the impression patriarchy.

Suspenseful plot with mostly flat characters
Revisado: 11-13-19
This book includes a plot that keeps you on your toes, and wonderful descriptions of elephants in the wild. however, many of the characters fall flat, and offer trite dialogue. I found this distracting from the great bits of the book and hard to get past.

Though they have the vote and the Pill and haven't been burned as witches since 1727, life isn't exactly a stroll down the catwalk for modern women. They are beset by uncertainties and questions: Why are they supposed to get Brazilians? Why do bras hurt? Why the incessant talk about babies? And do men secretly hate them? Caitlin Moran interweaves provocative observations on women's lives with laugh-out-loud funny scenes from her own, from adolescence to her development as a writer, wife, and mother.
