fun
Revisado: 08-27-21
It is just a fun story. It's not deep, not serious, just a fun fantasy ride that makes housework much easier.
The narrator is great. I can always tell who is who, and he's very easy to understand.

It was an easy listen I could work to.
Revisado: 01-15-20
I like books that I can easily follow while I work. that might mean that sometimes I give a 5 to a book that if it were just write it on the story and writing it might really just be a four, but for me it's a hit because it makes the work days go by faster. I found this very enjoyable. That said, it's really not that much different from previous books in the series.
I think you'll either love or hate the narration. The narrator does voices for the characters and there are a couple that wear on me. It does make it easy for me to figure out who's who though, which is another great feature that works for making it easy to listen to while working.

Another great book in the Magisterium Series
Revisado: 02-06-17
What did you love best about The Bronze Key?
I really love Paul Boehmer as a narrator, and I like this series. I find the series to be very visual with some great magic, and the character development is excellent. At times I feel like I am a tag-a-long part of the group. It's not serious, but it's entertaining.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I liked Call a lot, and Tamara. Call is so conflicted at times, but Tamara is just the best at always trying to do the right thing.
What about Paul Boehmer’s performance did you like?
The narrator is easy to understand and clear. I had no trouble telling which character was talking It was very well read at a good rate. In fact, I have been looking for other titles with him as a narrator.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It was very funny in places. It never got too terribly deep or sad, it was good company and helped me pass the time as I did chores.
Any additional comments?
I liked this series enough that I got all the books. I enjoyed them all.

My name is Frank Butcher, and when I got out of my truck to deliver the last package of the day, I never expected to get blown up by anti-magic zealots. Yeah, you heard me right. I said magic. I didn't know it was a thing either. Now, an ancient artifact is the only thing keeping me alive, and to make matters worse, that artifact is what those cultists wanted. Still, I could have made a run for it, disappeared into South America and spent the rest of my life on a beach.

Lots of action, often nerdy in a fun way
Revisado: 02-06-17
The narrator was great on this, and I really enjoyed all the characters. It was long but it never lagged, there was a lot of action in this story, and it was all described very well.
There were a lot of references to pop culture, like Star Wars and various movies, but that really made it fun for me.
Frank Butcher is the main character, and he's been given a second chance on life with a heart of gold that works like an anti-magic device. The thing is, he never even knew magic existed until he woke up with the heart, and suddenly, without even a chance at a proper recuperation, he's thrust into the middle of his doctor's quest to find her kidnapped son and save the world.
This story does wrap up neatly, but then it plunges into a second story as a hook to get you to want to buy the sequel. I'll probably pick it up sooner or later. I enjoyed the book a lot- it was very good to listen to during housekeeping, which I hate but this audiobook made it a lot better, and I looked forward to each session of listening.
I was gifted a credit to get the audiobook with.

A great follow up - very enjoyable
Revisado: 11-18-16
I love the narrator. I think he's my favorite narrator ever. I like him so much that I've been searching his other works! He's got a good voice, and it only adds to the story. He makes it very easy to follow the story line and I always know what character is talking.
I enjoyed this story as much as the first. I do think that this story could stand alone, but the first book is so good I would recommend anyone start with it instead of just jumping into this one. This one does give brief run-downs, but it doesn't waste a lot of time on catching newcomers up.
The pace in this book is nice and steady, with lots of action, and great dialog between the characters, a small group of young magicians working together to do what they think is the right thing. Issues of friendship and loyalty are a big part of the plot.
The world building is great, and the magic is imaginative and a lot of fun. The book managed to keep me guessing about character motivations all the way to the end, though it still wasn't fully resolved and I quickly pressed the button to get the next book, The Bronze Key.
I loved cleaning house to this book. It was so easy to follow and the narration was clear, and it helped me spend time doing chores more eagerly.

Most kids would do anything to pass the Iron Trial. Not Callum Hunt. He wants to fail. All his life, Call has been warned by his father to stay away from magic. If he succeeds at the Iron Trial and is admitted into the Magisterium, he is sure it can only mean bad things for him. So he tries his best to do his worst - and fails at failing. Now the Magisterium awaits him. It's a place that's both sensational and sinister, with dark ties to his past and a twisty path to his future.

Easy to follow, entertaining - great narrator too
Revisado: 10-20-16
I really enjoyed listening to this in audiobook format. Some books can be hard for me to follow as audiobooks, as I prefer to read books. However, this one is great. The narrator was really awesome - in fact, I will look for this narrator in the future.
I found it very easy to work in the kitchen and cook while listening to this book. It's a story a lonely, partly crippled young boy who reluctantly goes to magic school. He's been told it is a bad place for him to be, but he finds himself enjoying it and making friends despite his best efforts. There's a secret about him, something even he doesn't know, that causes his teacher to threaten to bind his magic if he doesn't make it well past the first year.
Fans of Harry Potter may like this book; it has some similarities, but also a lot of differences.
It's well written with great flow. There's lots of magic and action, and I found it very easy to tell who was talking and what' was going on even if I drifted off or had to leave the room for just a short bit.

When struggling riverboat captain Abner Marsh receives an offer of partnership from a wealthy aristocrat, he suspects something’s amiss. But when he meets the hauntingly pale, steely-eyed Joshua York, he is certain. For York doesn’t care that the icy winter of 1857 has wiped out all but one of Marsh’s dilapidated fleet. Nor does he care that he won’t earn back his investment in a decade. York has his own reasons for wanting to traverse the powerful Mississippi. And they are to be none of Marsh’s concern - no matter how bizarre, arbitrary, or capricious his actions may prove.

Great performance - convincing
Revisado: 09-09-14
Ron Donachie, the narrator on this tale, set in New Orleans and the Mississippi of by-gone days, was very convincing as Albert March, steamboat captain. I very much enjoyed listening to this story in his voice.
Now, the language might be too coarse for some - there's lots of 'taking the lord's name in vain' and that might be difficult for some in audiobook form. It did not bother me, I imagine that is exactly the way a crusty old steamboat captain might talk.
This is the story of two men. There's little romance in it, and a lot of action and story. It's the story of a very special vampire, among vampires, and his challenges and struggle. Albert Marsh is the captain of the Fevre Dream, a beautiful steamboat they built and own as partners.
The vampires presented are a bit different than average, with the capability of having newborns, and not really being completely like the legends. They are still, however, clearly vampires, and any fan of the genre should enjoy this tale.
I will probably listen to this one again. It's not so 'serious' that I could not miss a bit here and there and still not enjoy the story. It was, however, engrossing enough that night after night, I looked forward to my time getting to listen to it. That's why I gave it a 5 all around. It won't go down as great classic literature, but it has made my last few nights very pleasant and gave me something to look forward to.

Historia
Atticus O’Sullivan, last of the Druids, lives peacefully in Arizona, running an occult bookshop and shape-shifting in his spare time to hunt with his Irish wolfhound. His neighbors and customers think that this handsome, tattooed Irish dude is about twenty-one years old - when in actuality, he’s twenty-one centuries old. Not to mention: He draws his power from the earth, possesses a sharp wit, and wields an even sharper magical sword known as Fragarach, the Answerer. Unfortunately, a very angry Celtic god wants that sword, and he’s hounded Atticus for centuries....

LOVED this book
Revisado: 09-02-14
This book is FUNNY. It's imaginative and intelligent and very humorous. Kevin Hearne brings Pagan Gods and Goddesses to life in a way no one ever has.
This is the story of Atticus, an ancient druid, and his faithful Irish Wolfhound Oberon. Oberon is the best dog character EVER.
Atticus fits right in modern times. His Celtic tattoos that mark him as a druid just look, well, cool. He is young, but he owns a New Age bookstore where he's doing quite well selling teas that help keep the public feeling well and coming back.
In walks a sexy goddess....
This urban fantasy is one of the most delightful books that I have read- and later heard, in a long time! It's different, and quite funny.

Historia
"We're calling her Marilyn Monroe." Those were the words 12-year-old Jane Lawrence remembered when she was asked to head the up-and-coming blonde starlet's fan club at 20th Century Fox under the supervision of studio head Darryl Zanuck. Jane was no stranger to movie sets or movie stars, being that her father, Sidney Lipsitch, headed RKO's legal department. She spent many Saturday afternoons at her home with the likes of Robert Mitchum, Lucille Ball, and Ethel Merman, but helping launch the career of one of the world's most legendary sex symbols was a task beyond Jane's wildest dreams.

Kept me company
Revisado: 09-02-14
I liked the conversational tone of this book, and I enjoyed the narrator a good bit. I felt like the book kept me company for a few nights.
The story wasn't that stellar. It's basically Marilyn Monroe from her young fan club president's point of view. Both orphans finding themselves in the middle of Hollywood business, they use this as a touch point of commonality and that springboards a friendship. The rest of the story is about their relationship, and sometimes seeming obsession that the younger girl had with Marilyn. Many of the passages with Marilyn really seemed to distill her essence and were often the best parts of the book.
I did get to feeling though that a lot of this book was Jane's fantasy Marilyn, and not all Marilyn - it just didn't always ring true. This isn't a comment on the 'morality' of the book, because that sort of thing doesn't bother me anyway. It just didn't always seem quite plausible.
I like the narrator's voice a lot and she was well suited for this tale. That kept me going when the story occasionally made me wrinkle up my nose - which happened more frequently as the book progressed.
I received this book free for purposes of honest review.

Inspirational Short Stories with a Touch of Weird
Revisado: 06-17-14
There are 5 short stories in this collection, and they all deal with topics related to a theme of returning to life, or recovery from grief.
The narration is clear, and easy to listen to, though at times I found it a tad slow, speeding it up helped with that. That's normal for me - most people will find it fine on normal speed. The nice thing is that the narrator does have a deep enough voice so that it still sounds fine sped up a bit.
The stories are all very different, one is about a trip out west that ends up in a gas station in the middle of nowhere - it actually was so creepy it was a bit scary, but it ended up being inspirational too. There's a story about a man who decides to be a hermit, but is pulled back to life and society. The last story is about an Egyptian cat-alien that discusses their disappointments, and hope, with humanity.
If not for the inspirational theme line, if they were just pure entertainment, they'd remind me of folktales. They are short like that, have the creepy/weird creatures and people, and always wrap up nicely.
It was a good listen - I think this would make a nice gift for anyone suffering from some depression or grief.
