Historia
For over 20 years, a select group of Yale undergraduates has been admitted into the year-long "Grand Strategy" seminar team-taught by John Lewis Gaddis and Paul Kennedy. Its purpose: to provide a grounding in strategic decision-making in the face of crisis to prepare future American leaders for important work. Now, John Lewis Gaddis has transposed the experience of that course into a wonderfully succinct, lucid and inspirational book, a view from the commanding heights of statesmanship across the landscape of world history from the ancient Greeks to Lincoln, and beyond.

Unfocused
Revisado: 06-27-18
The author failed to create a clear, focused narrative. He was regularly sidetracked down unhelpful paths and did not provide a clear picture of the topic.

Historia
In the year 2045, reality is an ugly place. The only time Wade Watts really feels alive is when he’s jacked into the OASIS, a vast virtual world where most of humanity spends their days. When the eccentric creator of the OASIS dies, he leaves behind a series of fiendish puzzles, based on his obsession with the pop culture of decades past. Whoever is first to solve them will inherit his vast fortune—and control of the OASIS itself.

The kind of book you don't want to end.
Revisado: 11-02-16
Absolutely amazing book. I looked forward to every commute, even hoping the drive would be slower than usual.
The story was original and fun and the narration was excellent.
So made 80s references made it especially fun for someone who grew up then. It would be great even for those who weren't familiar with that decade though.

Historia
Jason Burke was a man hiding from himself in a small cabin high in the American Rocky Mountains when his simple, quiet life was shattered one night by what he first assumed was an aviation mishap. But when he investigates the crash, what he finds will yank him out of his self-imposed exile and thrust him into a world he could have never imagined.

Simple and Predictable
Revisado: 04-01-16
The Author's black fleet trilogy was so good I thought I'd try this series.
Unfortunately, with shallow and simple characters and a plot line that was completely predictable, it didn't live up to the other books.

Historia
Most personal and organizational problems are the result of a little-known phenomenon called "self-deception". We deceive ourselves into thinking we're doing the right thing for the right reason, but people won't follow a leader whose motives are selfish. The tricky thing is, we don't know that our motivation is flawed. This audiobook explains what self-deception is, how people get trapped in it, how it undermines relationships and organizational achievement, and - most importantly - the surprising way to solve it.

Leadership fable
Revisado: 03-19-16
When authors choose to tell a fictional story to illustrate their ideas it's usually because the ideas are pretty thin.
That's the case in this book as well. The central idea is to treat others the way you know you should. Good idea but it could have been presented in a pamphlet.

Historia
In the 25th century, humans have conquered space. The advent of faster-than-light travel has opened up hundreds of habitable planets for colonization, and humans have exploited the virtually limitless space and resources for hundreds of years with impunity. So complacent have they become with the overabundance that armed conflict is a thing of the past, and their machines of war are obsolete and decrepit. What would happen if they were suddenly threatened by a terrifying new enemy?

Rip-roaring Ride!
Revisado: 02-27-16
No augmented humans, no shields on ships - just warp drives and big guns on battleships in space. The story is great with interesting characters and a fast-moving plot. Things make sense and there's little disbelief that you'll have to suspend. Mark Boyett does a great job with the performance as well, differentiating voices and putting the emotion into the dialogue.
It was a great listen and I'm downloading the sequel immediately. The third of the series doesn't appear to be on audible however.

Richard Armitage is awesome
Revisado: 01-01-16
Richard Armitage does an incredible job with narrating this story, differentiating the voices and adding emotion throughout.
The story itself requires attention to follow and is more of a morality tale than a drama. Interesting though.

Revisado: 06-09-14
When you look forward to your commute each day, you know you've picked up a great audiobook. I listened to this trilogy over the span of two weeks and found the characters interesting and the story engaging.
The writing is a bit simplistic at times but the narration by Victor Bevine is great.
Thoroughly enjoyable and I've moved on to the next series of Drizzt books.

From batting averages and political polls to game shows and medical research, the real-world application of statistics continues to grow by leaps and bounds. How can we catch schools that cheat on standardized tests? How does Netflix know which movies you'll like? What is causing the rising incidence of autism? As best-selling author Charles Wheelan shows us in Naked Statistics, the right data and a few well-chosen statistical tools can help us answer these questions and more.

Solid and digestable summary of statistics
Revisado: 11-06-13
Very well written - engaging and interesting. It's a stats class that woudl have been fun to take in school. Covers basic stats from mean and median up to regression analysis and things to watch for when interpreting these statistics.
Due to the content, it's sometimes difficult to follow in the audio version and a visual would have been helpful but otherwise, a useful and worthwhile discussion of important understandings of the use of statistics in the real world.

Historia
Explore the power of the underdog in Malcolm Gladwell's dazzling examination of success, motivation, and the role of adversity in shaping our lives, from the best-selling author of The Bomber Mafia. Three thousand years ago on a battlefield in ancient Palestine, a shepherd boy felled a mighty warrior with nothing more than a stone and a sling, and ever since then the names of David and Goliath have stood for battles between underdogs and giants. David's victory was improbable and miraculous. He shouldn't have won. Or should he have?

Good but not the best
Revisado: 10-20-13
Gladwell is a gifted writer and an exceptional narrator. He brings these talents to bear on his newest book and deliveres a great performance as usual. Unfortunately, the content isn't as strong as a couple of his previous books. The connections between the stories and his overall premise is a bit stretched at times and occasionally difficult to see how they relate.
Still a good buy however with some solid takeaways and as usual, a new perspective on the world.
