Meh
Revisado: 07-28-24
Half of the book's content is the author telling you what you will learn in some other section. Once you get through all that fluff, the remaining advice is generic and should be common sense for anyone who has the skillet to be a data scientist.

Historia
A fascinating tour of creatures from the surface to the deepest ocean floor: How Far the Light Reaches invites us to envision wilder, grander, and more abundant possibilities for the way we live. Conservation journalist Sabrina Imbler discovers that some of the most radical models of family, community, and care can be found in the sea, from gelatinous chains that are both individual organisms and colonies of clones to deep-sea crabs that have no need for the sun, nourished instead by the chemicals and heat throbbing from the core of the Earth.

I came for the biology...
Revisado: 05-28-24
I bought this audiobook wanting to know more about life and the oceans. What I got was a lot of information about the author's love life. It is well written, just not my cup of tea. But if you want a story about green tea and holding hands all night, you will find it in the book.

Seven Myths of the Spanish Conquest

Historia
Using a wide array of sources, historian Matthew Restall highlights seven key myths, uncovering the source of the inaccuracies and exploding the fallacies and misconceptions behind each myth. This vividly written and authoritative book shows, for instance, that native Americans did not take the conquistadors for gods and that small numbers of vastly outnumbered Spaniards did not bring down great empires with stunning rapidity. We discover that Columbus was correctly seen in his lifetime - and for decades after - as a briefly fortunate but unexceptional participant in efforts.

A good book marred by awful narration
Revisado: 02-23-24
Why would the author or publisher chose someone who cannot pronounce Spanish words as the narrator? I cringed every time the narrator said conquistador and Nicaragua.

Historia
Dame Sue Black is an internationally renowned forensic anthropologist and human anatomist. She has lived her life eye to eye with the Grim Reaper, and she writes vividly about it in this book, which is part primer on the basics of identifying human remains, part frank memoir of a woman whose first paying job as a schoolgirl was to apprentice in a butcher shop, and part no-nonsense but deeply humane introduction to the reality of death in our lives. It is a treat for CSI junkies, murder mystery and thriller fans, and anyone seeking a clear-eyed guide to a subject that touches us all.

I wanted a science book about forensics. I got a mostly-memoir instead.

Disappointed by the misleading description.
Revisado: 04-29-23
I was looking for a book on forensic science. This is definitely not a book about forensic science or forensic anthropology. Instead, what you get is a book talking about the death of the author's family members. Oh, you also get stories about the first cadaver that the author studied in school.

As Dr. Kleier shares her knowledge with contagious excitement for her subject, she emphasizes the middle ground: Instead of focusing on cell microbiology or the study of ecosystems and habitats, she stresses the basic biology, function, and the amazing adaptations of the plants we see all around us.

Not a good Audio Course too many visual references
Revisado: 09-01-20
I honestly liked this course as I have an interest in the topic. However, the author repeatedly makes reference to images that she must be using during the lecture. Unfortunately, the distributor Great Courses has decided not to include these images as a reference. This would have been a really easy fix; however, without the images it is difficult to follow along.

Horrible reading of a really good book.
Revisado: 04-12-20
I bought this first as the Kindle book and then part way through as an audio book. I like the content of the book. Indeed, I liked it enough that I also wanted to listen. However, the author of the book really should have invested in a professional narrator. The oddly paced dictation really ruined the audio book for me.
