What Lovecraftian stories should be.
Revisado: 03-09-24
I really enjoyed this! I feel that this has the soul of Lovecraft in it.. it is dark and unforgiving. The only thing about it is that it doesn't quite fit into "The Horror at Red hook" as Lovecraft wrote it, but I think the story is good enough that it is a forgivable transgression. 😄

not every short story is a winner
Revisado: 03-09-24
I enjoyed this book very much! Not every story was excellent, but the ones that are, I absolutely loved. The king in binary was my favorite. There are a couple of stories that are done twice.. one "acted", the other read.. which might be a little unnecessary.. And at the end a couple of actual lovecraft stories.

Historia
From New York Times best-selling author Stephen Graham Jones comes a novel that is equal parts psychological horror and cutting social commentary on identity politics and the American-Indian experience. Fans of Jordan Peele and Tommy Orange will love this story as it follows the lives of four American-Indian men and their families, all haunted by a disturbing, deadly event that took place in their youth. Years later, they find themselves tracked by an entity bent on revenge, totally helpless as the culture and traditions they left behind catch up to them in a vengeful way.

an insignificant horror fan's opinion
Revisado: 08-26-22
I loved it. It was different in ways that held my attention.. bringing me back after each shock, needing to know what happens next. Feeling the pain, anger, sadness, fear and paranoia of so many characters.. Drawing me in close to see events through different eyes and wondering who the "bad guy" really is. I am going to look for more books from this author, even if they are not horror stories, and give them a listen.

Beginning with the witch hunts of the early 15th century, Professor Jennifer McNabb takes you on an eye-opening exploration of witchcraft and superstition in Witchcraft in the Western Tradition. In these 10 lectures, you will better understand where many of our most indelible images of witchcraft come from and how the religious pursuit of witches across Europe and into the Americas in the early modern period spread fear and violence like a contagion, for generations.

I find religion fascinating, as well as the cruelty of mankind, and the extent that people will go to prove their point.. even when it has deadly consequences. You might find this short series of lectures surprising.. in hearing some of the facts of such a time in recorded history. I would definitely recommend if you have interests in such things!

Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

Wonderful!
Revisado: 04-11-22
I first saw the 1984 version as a child, my mother had it on VHS. I really enjoyed it. When I was older I read the book.. and I was completely taken in. The depth of it all, the detail.. how vast that universe was.. is. This will always be my favorite out of all the dune books, though I do own them all.
I think this is a wonderful telling. It is a little odd, the moments they chose to have either the narrator to read the characters vs the "actors".. and might be a little annoying for some. But I really like the narrator and when the different "actors" read instead of the narrator, I feel it brings a certain richness to the moment. If you liked the newest movie, I would definitely give this telling of it a chance.

Revisado: 03-16-22
I saw the movie a while back, so when I saw the book on audible I purchased it right away. Of course, just like most books that are turned into movies, there were changes made.. for better or for worse.. but one of the things that the movie does not have is how much the main character suffers.. physically. There were definitely times when the descriptions of his wounds, and how they were opened snd reopened time and time again.. were cringing. Like the feeling in your teeth when someone scratches fingernails down a chalkboard. The authors descriptions are very vivid and palpable. If you like folk horror I would give it a chance!

My mother had a copy of the original animated film on VHS. John Hurt voicing the character of Hazel. I loved it so much! I could not count the times I watched it as a child. And it was not until much later that I even knew that it was a book. The BBC reimagined the animated film just a few years ago! The cast bursting with amazing actors! I love James McAvoy! And perhaps it is merely childhood nostalgia, but he was not MY Hazel. He was not James Hurt. Peter Capaldi was amazing! He brought vivid life to all of the characters! It's a wonderful story. Wonderfully told.

Historia
In this “eloquent understanding of how death is viewed through many spiritual traditions” (Publishers Weekly, starred review), Bart Ehrman recounts the long history of the afterlife, ranging from The Epic of Gilgamesh up to the writings of Augustine, focusing especially on the teachings of Jesus and his early followers. He discusses ancient guided tours of heaven and hell, in which a living person observes the sublime blessings of heaven for those who are saved and the horrifying torments of hell for those who are damned.

I was raised in a Christian household. A household where I was not aloud to have my own opinions because a man of God needs to have his house in order to lead others. I went to a church that taught that the bible was the inspired word of God and it was all true. Where it was taught that if a child died before they were baptized, they went to hell. That women have no right to teach men. That homosexuality is an abomination and punishable by eternal damnation. That parents should not want happiness for their children, they should want salvation for them. A church where predestination was the way of this existence. I was taught to fear God's wrath. I struggled. I didn't see myself as evil.. But that didn't matter. If I was not saved, I was damed. I eventually came to the only logical conclusion.. if my father was correct.. If the bible was the infallible word of God.. Then God simply did not want me. And who am I to question.. I left at that house and that church at 18 years of age to follow my own path.. Be it a damned one.
I cannot claim to have read the entire bible, but I hope to someday make that claim. I have taken classes in philosophy of religion and ethics. I have read many works of Joseph Campbell. I have read books like The Lakota Way and others on world religions. And with Audible I have listened to many of the wonderful Great Courses. This is where I first had the pleasure of listening to Mr. Ehrman..
I know many will not like what he has to say in this book and in others. And you certainly don't have to. But it is a wealth of knowledge and I intend to listen to more of his books.
Thank you, again, Bart D. Ehrman. I appreciate your words. I appreciate your knowledge. If I could, I would shake your hand.

Peter Aykroyd spent his childhood watching his family’s parlor séances through the crack of a basement door. Here, for the first time, Aykroyd tells the strange and delightful story that inspired his son, Dan, to make the mega-hit Ghostbusters. Part history, part family legend, A History of Ghosts starts in 1848 in upstate New York, where the spiritualist craze first began....

I enjoyed this book very much! I almost listened to it in one sitting. If you have interest in the history of such things, this book is a wealth of knowledge! I was surprised at some of the names i recognized! And it is not a one sided view. The author writes on the investigations and proven frauds of the times, as well as things they could not explain away. It was fun to Google some of the names and seeing some of the photographs and art that were proclaimed paranormal.

It was the end of World War II. FDR's New Deal had redefined American politics. Taxes were at an all-time high. The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki had created a fear of total annihilation. The rise of secret government agencies and sanctions on business had many watching their backs. America's sense of freedom was diminishing... and many were desperate to take that freedom back.

Revisado: 03-01-18
I loved the rapture bioshocks so much! I really enjoyed the book, knowing just a little bit more about the rapture universe. I am interested to see if there will be a part 2... The narrator wasn't the best with all of the accents in the book, but I didn't mind. I wanted to know the story more than i cared about the narrator's authentic Irish accent :)
