Historia
To eight-year-old Bela, her family is her world. There’s Mommy, Daddo, and Grandma Ruth. But there is also Other Mommy, a malevolent entity who asks her every day: “Can I go inside your heart?” When horrifying incidents around the house signal that Other Mommy is growing tired of asking Bela the question over and over, Bela understands that unless she says yes, her family will soon pay. Other Mommy is getting restless, stronger, bolder. Only the bonds of family can keep Bela safe, but other incidents show cracks in her parents’ marriage. The safety Bela relies on is about to unravel.

Forgettable
Revisado: 10-19-24
The writing style makes this one easy to read, and the voice actor reading in a child’s voice was a good choice. It feel short in the plot for my taste. It really felt like not much actually happened in the 8 hours it takes to get through it, then it just sort of ends in a way that left me feeling unfulfilled.

Historia
Gypsies, faith-healers, moonshiners, and snake handlers weave through Drema's childhood in 1940s Appalachia after her father is killed in the coal mines, her mother goes off to work as a Rosie the Riveter, and she is left in the care of devout Pentecostal grandparents. What follows is a spitfire of a memoir that feels like a novel with intrigue, sweeping emotion, and indisputable charm. Drema's coming of age is colored by tent revivals with Grandpa, poetry-writing hobos, and traveling carnivals, and through it all, she serves witness to a multi-generational family.

Stay fir the ending

This book haunts me. Not because of its beginning or middle. The last 15 minutes cuts me down the middle and makes me see myself for who I am. Beautiful like poetry

Historia
Tokyo resident Keiko Furukara has never fit in - neither in her family, nor in school - but when at the age of 18 she begins working at the Hiiromachi branch of national convenience store chain Smile Mart, she realizes instantly that she has found her purpose in life. Delighted to be able to exist in a place where the rules of social interaction are crystal clear (many are laid out line-by-line in the store's manual), Keiko does her best to copy the dress, mannerisms, and mode of speech of her colleagues, playing the part of a "normal" person excellently, more or less.

Historia
Hendrik Groen may be old, but he is far from dead and isn't planning to be buried any time soon. Granted, his daily strolls are getting shorter because his legs are no longer willing, and he has to visit his doctor more than he'd like. Technically speaking he is...elderly. But surely there is more to life at his age than weak tea and potted geraniums? Hendrik sets out to write an exposé: a year in the life of his care home in Amsterdam, revealing all its ups and downs.

Revisado: 02-25-20
What a treasure of a book! This will age like a time capsule. The stories are rich with humor, and still gives the reader a real look at being old. Gave me some perspective of my own aging family members. The old but not dead club has me wanting fan merchandise!

Not perfect, but it was fun.
Revisado: 02-25-20
This is one of those stories that twist and turn and sometimes doesn’t feel like it makes any sense why the characters do what they do. That’s not what fiction is for though. This one is fun none the less. A light hearted hero story with good closure at the end. Reads like a grown up young adult novel. A great book for a long weekend.

Revisado: 04-07-19
I’m typing this after just finishing every second of these books. I’m sitting, alone, on the front porch. It’s an early spring Sunday afternoon and it started to rain slightly just as the last chapter began. I can’t believe how good this was. I feel like I too am a member of the great family and feel true loss that the story is done. No one I know will ever read these books I’m sure, so I’m writing this here instead. I will revisit these stories every few years for the rest of my life. There is something here for every person of every age group. The author teaches us how to handle the passage of time, the handling of family, and the living with regret. A true master work in living a full life, cleverly disguised as fiction book. At its close, I knew that something inside me was different. This is why we are readers, this is what we find in pages that the rest of the world is missing out on. It can’t be named, but it is here, hidden somewhere in the 30 hours it takes to consume it. I am so glad I got to experience it.
