Historia
Until about 1800, the West and the Islamic realm were like two adjacent, parallel universes, each assuming itself to be the center of the world while ignoring the other. As Europeans colonized the globe, the two world histories intersected and the Western narrative drove the other one under. The West hardly noticed, but the Islamic world found the encounter profoundly disrupting.

If you don't about Islam, you need to read this.
Revisado: 07-02-15
This was an excellent primer about Islam for those of us who don't really know much about it. This is very complicated history and the author touches enough of it to give you a good idea of just how complicated it really is. If you like history, you will like this book. The narration is very good, simply done with authentic pronunciations of the names for people, places, and things, which is also fascinating. I think this is the kind of book that someone who wants to learn about Islam would start with and it provides plenty of paths to follow for further research or knowledge. I highly recommend this book and I don't do that with great frequency.

Do not bother
Revisado: 08-25-14
Self-indulgent, sappy, confusing. It sounded like it was written by an old man remembering his past in an emotional and confusing way. I'm only four years younger than the author and I barely made it halfway through the book. Very disappointing
for O'Rourke.

Historia
In 1895, when Captain Joshua Slocum completed the first solo circumnavigation on his 37-foot sloop, the Spray, no one believed it could be done. This firsthand account of Captain Slocum's remarkable voyage - 3 years and 46,000 miles - is full of adventures, dangers, and triumphs. Stormy seas, hostile natives, Moorish pirates, and even a bizarre meeting with President Paul Kruger of the Transvaal, who insisted that Slocum could never have sailed "around the world," since everyone with the meanest intelligence knew the world was flat, make up the fabric of the most wonderful travelogue of all.

Wonderfull
Revisado: 05-27-09
If you love the ocean and admire those who have challenged it, you'll love this book. It is amazing what this man did in his time. It is great for the sailing story alone, but the character of the man who made the voyage is equalling compelling, you come away with an admiration for his view of the world. The language is very authentic, something I found interesting but it does take some time time to get used to. But, be patient, it is worth it. The narrator was very good, very even handed in his delivery.

Don't bother
Revisado: 01-29-07
I deleted this book with about 3 hours left. The narrator is awful, I'll never buy a book with him again. The story is extremely thin and it is more about the psyche of a fictional cop than about the actual Dahlia murder. It is full of racial and sexual slurs that are supposed to be period I guess but it seemed the author enjoyed the language. And it was amateurly written. Don' bother.

Historia
At the peak of his professional career, after having led the Asia Society for nearly a decade, Oxnam was haunted by periodic blackouts and episodic rages. After his family and friends intervened, Oxnam received help from a psychiatrist, Dr. Jeffery Smith, and entered a rehab center. It wasn't until 1990, during a session with Dr. Smith, that the first of Oxnam's 11 alternate personalities, an angry young boy named Tommy, suddenly emerged.

Too Much Ego
Revisado: 01-15-06
The subject matter was interesting but I eventually got tired of Oxnam's fascination with himself, his accomplishments, his intelligence, his sophistication. Afet the wedding in the park with the poetry reading and the Indian ceremony and the horse and carriage, I'd had enough. A little more about the subject matter and less about Oxnam himself would have helped. I do believe some people with a great interest in personality disorders might like this though.

Historia
Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in history, technological invention, engineering, architecture, construction, human accomplishement against great adversity, and crime. Fascinating juxtapositioning of the best man can accomplish set against the darkest of our nature. I loved this book.

Black House
Revisado: 06-07-04
The book was depressing, long and full of repugnant imagery of bodily fluids, rotting flesh, autoeroticism and more. I listened to half of it and couldn't go on and I hardly ever give up on a book. It is 24 hours long and after 12 hours I was left wondering when will this get interesting. There are no redeeming characters and entirely too much weird dreamlike musing. Don't waste you time on this one.
