Historia
American evangelical Christianity has lost its way. While the witness of the church before a watching world is diminished beyond recognition, congregations are torn apart over Donald Trump, Christian nationalism, racial injustice, sexual predation, disgraced leaders, and covered-up scandals. Left behind are millions of believers who counted on the church to be a place of belonging and hope. As greater and greater numbers of younger Americans bleed out from the church, even the most rooted evangelicals are wondering, “Can American Christianity survive?”

Thoughtful, insightful, and inspiring
Revisado: 02-15-24
Moore is a prophet for our times. This book will doubtless offend those on both extremes of the political spectrum: as a Christian and an unashamed evangelical (in the original, “Gospel-oriented” sense of the word), Moore does not back away from those stumbling blocks that originally made the Gospel of Jesus Christ a scandal to the religious and foolishness to the worldly-wise: the sufficiency of Christ, the power of the Word, the reality of the supernatural, and the cross as a historical reality, theological necessity, and model for discipleship. However, rather than focus on “outsiders”, Moore (much like Jesus) directs most of his argument against those who would take the revelation of God and turn it into a tool for personal or political self-aggrandizement. Those who listen with open ears will find much to consider. “Hear, you who have ears to hear, what the Spirit says to the churches”.

Even people who are not professing Christians think they are familiar with the story of the Nativity. Every Christmas, displays of Jesus resting in a manger populate lawns and churchyards, and songs about shepherds and angels fill the air. Yet despite the abundance of these Christian references in popular culture, how many of us have examined the hard edges of this biblical story? Timothy Keller takes listeners on an illuminating journey into the surprising background of the Nativity.

Excellent and very readable discussion of the theology of Christmas. I particularly enjoyed Mary as well as the discussion of learning from the shepherds. Will try to listen each Christmas

Historia
Don and Mimi Galvin seemed to be living the American dream. After World War II, Don's work with the Air Force brought them to Colorado, where their 12 children perfectly spanned the baby boom: the oldest born in 1945, the youngest in 1965. In those years, there was an established script for a family like the Galvins—aspiration, hard work, upward mobility, domestic harmony. But behind the scenes was a different story: psychological breakdown, sudden shocking violence, hidden abuse. By the mid-1970s, six of the 10 Galvin boys, one after another, were diagnosed as schizophrenic.

Tedious
Revisado: 06-20-23
I am apparently in the minority who did not find this book fascinating. I commend the author for the extensive research done in preparation, both in compiling the biographical account and in the medical advances on schizophrenia. Perhaps it was the narration, perhaps just too many superfluous details, but it was really challenging for me to finish this book.

Superb story and narration
Revisado: 05-27-23
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author meticulously researched the story of a wartime heroine previously unknown to me and wrote her life story with amazing development of not only the action, which was edge of your seat, but the characters. I loved this narrator before and she was equally good this time, doing well with a variety of characters and accents.

Historia
Chief medical examiner Kay Scarpetta is the reluctant star witness in a sensational murder trial when she receives shocking news. The judge’s sister has been found dead. At first glance, it appears to be a home invasion, but then why was nothing stolen, and why is the garden strewn with dead plants and insects? Although there is no apparent cause of death, Scarpetta recognizes telltale signs of the unthinkable, and she knows the worst is yet to come. The forensic pathologist finds herself pitted against a powerful force that returns her to the past.

Historia
For most of the last hundred years, Biloxi was known for its beaches, resorts, and seafood industry. But it had a darker side. It was also notorious for corruption and vice, everything from gambling, prostitution, bootleg liquor, and drugs to contract killings. The vice was controlled by small cabal of mobsters, many of them rumored to be members of the Dixie Mafia.

Long and tedious
Revisado: 01-02-23
Although I have loved John Grisham’s books in the past, I found this one some what plodding and bogged down by detail. The storyline was not particularly suspenseful and the ending unsatisfying. Even the performance seemed hampered by hokey Southern accents. I almost always finish a book I’ve started and did this one, but I wouldn’t advise spending the considerable time it takes. Sorry, John.

In Counterfeit Gods, Keller applies his trademark approach to show us how a proper understanding of the Bible reveals the unvarnished truth about societal ideals and our own hearts. This powerful message will cement Keller's reputation as a critical thinker and pastor, and comes at a crucial time - for both the faithful and the skeptical.

Historia
In turn-of-the-20th century Texas, the Berachah Home for the Redemption and Protection of Erring Girls is an unprecedented beacon of hope for young women consigned to the dangerous poverty of the streets by birth, circumstance, or personal tragedy. Built in 1903 on the dusty outskirts of Arlington, a remote dot between Dallas and Fort Worth’s red-light districts, the progressive home bucks public opinion by offering faith, training, and rehabilitation to prostitutes, addicts, unwed mothers, and “ruined” girls without forcibly separating mothers from children.

Predictable
Revisado: 06-27-21
Although I love the historical research that went into this novel snd admire the work of the Baracha home, it seemed that the story did bring out every cliche about the hypocrisy of the church. I’m sorry if the author experienced many of these things, but as a follower of Jesus, I felt that it portrayed his people in an unfairly negative light. As for the narrator it did seem that she had two voices, one male snd one female. I don’t like to be negative but this was not my favorite listen.

Historia
Shocking and controversial when it was first published in 1939, Steinbeck's Pulitzer prize-winning epic The Grapes of Wrath remains his undisputed masterpiece. Set against the background of Dust Bowl Oklahoma and Californian migrant life, it tells of Tom Joad and his family, who, like thousands of others, are forced to travel west in search of the promised land. Their story is one of false hopes, thwarted desires, and broken dreams, yet out of their suffering Steinbeck created a drama that is intensely human, yet majestic in its scale and moral vision.
