Historia
I was the girl no one looked at twice. Until they saw me. My whole life, no one has had my back. My parents are dead, my adoptive mother is a drug addict, and the mean girls on campus mock me for my scars. So when I end up desperate for money and out of options, I agree to sell the one thing I have left: my innocence. On the night I’m meant to give my body to a brutal Russian mobster, three men storm into the room like dark shadows and kill him before he can claim me. When they drag me from the blood-soaked bed, I’m certain they’re going to kill me too.

Translations?
Revisado: 05-03-25
Narrators did a good job. Plot is more than a little far fetched, but that’s often the case for romance and I’ve read far worse. It’s irritating that there don’t seem to be any translations for the Russian parts. And because this is audio I can’t even just google it because I have no idea what they’re saying or how to write those parts out.

Couldn't Finish It
Revisado: 07-17-22
An interesting idea, but this was just repetative and boring. It just goes on and on about how horrible things are for whichever character is the focus of the chapter. I often found that I'd stopped listening and had to go back, until I decided I don't really care what happens in the end.

Historia
The tale begins in Dark Age Britain, a land where Arthur has been banished and Merlin has disappeared, where a child-king sits unprotected on the throne, where religion vies with magic for the souls of the people. It is to this desperate land that Arthur returns, a man at once utterly human and truly heroic: a man of honor, loyalty, and amazing valor; a man who loves Guinevere more passionately than he should; a man whose life is at once tragic and triumphant.

Poor narration!
Revisado: 09-13-21
It's unfortunate the narrator felt he needed to SHRIEK anything even slightly above absolute calm. I have enjoyed many of Cornwell's stories, but couldn't get through this one despite a couple of attempts.

Poor Choice of Narrator
Revisado: 12-13-17
R. C. Bray is a pretty good narrator & I've enjoyed other books he's done. Unfortunately, he's bad at the UK accents this book calls for, so was a really terrible choice for this series.

Historia
When a mysterious figure appears in Three Pines one cold November day, Armand Gamache and the rest of the villagers are at first curious. Then wary. Through rain and sleet, the figure stands unmoving, staring ahead. From the moment its shadow falls over the village, Gamache, now Chief Superintendent of the Sûreté du Québec, suspects the creature has deep roots and a dark purpose. Yet he does nothing. What can he do? Only watch and wait. And hope his mounting fears are not realized.

Not the best, but still good.
Revisado: 10-01-17
That headline sums up both my feelings about this story & the new(ish) narrator.
This isn't my favorite Three Pines story, but it's still pretty good. Ending seemed a bit abrupt & I'd have liked to have spent a bit more time with the people of Three Pines, but otherwise okay.
And I will always miss Ralph Cosham as the original narrator & voice of Gamache, but I think Robert Bathurst does a very good job, too. I like to think of him as Gamache's non-francophone voice, "with the slight English accent he picked up at Cambridge".

A Good Story Badly Edited. Beware Missing Parts.
Revisado: 11-04-15
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
It's an entertaining story & Marsters does his usual fine job of narrating. But there are approximately 30 lines of dialogue & text missing from chapter 13 (a smidge less than 10 minutes in) that make the section a bit hard to follow. I'm disappointed in the lack of quality control (Again! Get it together Audible!). Now that I've gone and read the missing section, I'll get back to enjoying the story and hope there aren't any more errors.
Any additional comments?
Audible, you need to hire people who can create a decent (iPhone) app. It was fine a few years ago, but now it's pretty glitchy. Less time re-designing logos, more time creating a good user interface, please!

The Wrong Voice
Revisado: 01-23-15
Any additional comments?
I found the first 3 books in this series quite charming. This 4th book was only available with Adam Sims as narrator and, although I knew the switch wouldn't be seamless, I was surprised at how much less I enjoyed the story with him narrating. Listening to Ralph Cosham, each character had a distinct 'voice', but I was still able to get lost in the story and sort of forget Cosham was there. However, Sims' conspicuous acting of every character made it hard for me to hear the story. I really had to force myself to focus in order to take in what was happening. I don't want to miss events in Gamache's life or in Three Pines, but I'll be skipping books 5 & 6 since only Sims' versions are available.

An invitation to stay with childhood friends seems an excellent idea to aid Helena's recovery after her cancer treatment. Helena grew up with the Hickmans and had spent many happy holidays with them. Any additional comments?
Not a bad story or performance. This one's in the same style/quality as previous books in the series. Unfortunately, ISIS did a sloppy job and there are more than a few errors/re-takes in this one that haven't been edited out.
Also, it would be helpful if Audible numbered the books in this series to make it easier for those of us who want to listen to them all in the right order.

Great Performance, But Not Outlander
Revisado: 01-29-13
Any additional comments?
A bit better than the average romance novel, mostly because of the more involved plot. Still, it's not half as clever nor as entertaining as Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series.

Beware- missing part
Revisado: 08-25-12
Any additional comments?
I haven't finished listening to the whole book, but so far both the performance and the story are quite entertaining. HOWEVER, it seems there's a piece missing about 4 hours 20 minutes into Part 3. Just after Matthew leaves Bidwell at Pain's house, it seems he has a conversation with Winston that's been almost completely cut out. The narrator is saying"...[Bidwell] stood with the handkerchief pressed against his mouth..." and then abruptly Matthew is outside and Winston is saying "that's when I went to see Danforth..". I don't feel that I've wasted a credit because it seems a minor omission at this point in the story, but I am pretty disappointed with Audible's quality control. Hopefully, the rest of the story is intact.
