Historia
In Metsan Valo, her family home on Lake Superior, Anni Halla’s beloved grandmother has died. Among her fond memories, what Anni remembers most vividly is her grandmother’s eerie yet enchanting storytelling. By firelight she spun tall tales of spirits in the nearby forest and waters who could heal - or harm - on a whim. But of course those were only stories.

I was attracted to this because I saw the mystery and gothic tags. I think that does what might be a fine book a disservice. If that’s what you’re looking for, keep looking.

Yikes. This was a rough one. Somehow this is an entire book with no plot - no reveal, mystery, turning point. It’s like a set up that goes on forever and then it’s done. The protagonist is very unlikeable, but not on purpose. Not a prude, but I was not expecting the soft core scenes. If you’re sensitive to non-consensual sex, skip it. The narrator was good though 🤷🏻♀️

Anything that isn't dialogue is read with the exact same intonation pattern, which happens to be pretty pronounced. If you can get past the first chapter or two, dialogue picks up, but it's distracting at first.

Historia
It's midnight on St. James Court, at the heart of which is a beautiful fountain sculpture of Venus rising from the sea. Kathryn Callaghan has just finished the first draft of her novel about renowned painter Élisabeth Vigée-Le Brun, a survivor of the French Revolution who was hated for her sympathetic portraits of Marie Antoinette. Although the manuscript is complete, its author remains haunted by Élisabeth's experiences, which are revealed in Sena Jeter Naslund's ingenious novel-within-a-novel interweaved with the chronicle of a day in the life of Kathryn Callaghan.

Worst Book in 11 Years!
Revisado: 07-01-14
I joined Audible in 2003 and this is the first book I really wished I hadn't purchased. As a two page essay, it might have worked, but there was no plot. Nothing happened. The narration was adequate, but one central character's French accent was so overly dramatic as to be embarrassing and the other was given what I think was meant as a dreamy quality, but she just sounded high. Had the material been better, the narration may not have bothered me, but as a whole, this was a painful book to complete.

Historia
In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women—mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends—view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don't.

Friends, my women's group and even Audible recommended this book to me over and over. Somehow the description just never intrigued me. I finally bought it and could not put it down. The writing draws us into a world of people that we care about. empathize with and sometimes detest. The narration is terrific, particularly Jenna Lamia ( Skeeter) who I wish could narrate my daily life. I love it so much I'm writing my first review after having a monthly subscription to Audible for 7 years.
