Historia
The further adventures of "Dr. Gonzo" as he defends the "cucarachas" - the Chicanos of East Los Angeles. Before his mysterious disappearance and probable death in 1971, Oscar Zeta Acosta was famous as a Robin Hood Chicano lawyer and notorious as the real-life model for Hunter S. Thompson's "Dr. Gonzo" a fat, pugnacious attorney with a gargantuan appetite for food, drugs, and life on the edge.

Better take than HST's
Revisado: 08-15-24
A vastly underated influence, political figure, lawyer and writer. He may have burned out like a shooting star, but he didn't retreat into decades of cocaine and Chivas Regal that destroyed his talent, like Thompson. And, as Zeta complained in a letter in HST's collected letters, HST did owe him much for teaching HST how to write dialogue. Once you read Acosta's two books, his influence is impossible to miss in Thompson's work, even if indirect, as both of Acostas books were published after Vegas. Also, Acosta put his ass and his life on the line repeatedly, something Thompson did only in Hells Angels. Acosta carries most of the weight in Vegas anyway. Both of his books recommended highly, glad they're back in print.

She's going after everyone she's got a grudge against - and it's a long list. In the meantime, Alex has to deal with his arch-enemy, Levistus. The Council's death squads are hunting Alex as well as Anne, and the only way for Alex to stop them is to end his long war with Levistus and the Council, by whatever means necessary.

This and the previous book are where things take off
Revisado: 04-12-24
Threads come together, things that seemed to have little purpose prove to have great purpose, and the plotting of the series takes on serious and, to me at least, unexpected force. I can't stop now. there were a couple of books earlier in the series in which the plot seemed to flag. Don't stop there. Jacka is quite good, to give him suitably restrained British praise.
High praise goes to Gildart Jackson, who imbues Verus with personality and force of will. He does fine with the other characters. Because of him, the audiobook Verus series held my attention better than the text version, although that may be because of circumstances during my reading.

Historia
Stalky & Co. is a book published in 1899 (following serialization in the Windsor Magazine) by Rudyard Kipling, about adolescent boys at a British boarding school. It is a collection of linked short stories in format, with some information about the charismatic Stalky character in later life. The character Beetle, one of the main trio, is partly based on Kipling himself. Stalky is based on Lionel Dunsterville, M'Turk is based on George Charles Beresford, and Mr. King is based on William Carr Crofts.

First proper reading of Kipling's best book
Revisado: 03-21-19
Wonderdully narrated by someone who understands it. Kipling's dialogue (and dialect) was never better than this. S&C tells you more about how the British "conquered a quarter of the globe in a fit of absent- mindedness" than a shelf of history books. Ignore the misbegotten other reading by an outfit that inexplicably chose a female American reader for this quintessentially male and British book.
The only downside is that it's not the Complete version.
