This collection, read in Padraig's gentle way, is food for the soul. Its invitational and reflective style, just like the podcast, begs to be listened to in small portions when the heart is open and ready to receive, rather than racing to the finish.

There are better resources on the enneagram out there. I wonder if the book is written as a bunch of visual graphs and tables, because it is strangely repetitive in a bewildering way. I found myself becoming impatient as it seemed to be trying to fill space to seem more informative. The narration also struck me as odd and unnatural.

Note: It took me a good bit of the book to decide that the author's attempt at voices was probably not intended to color his representation of the people he was writing about. Overall, Jeff's reading style is very nice to listen to.

I came to this book hoping it would help me process my own journey as a gay Christian. It exceeded my expectations with beautiful writing and a listening heart that was balm for my soul. I bought a couple hard copies, as I sometimes do with books that move me, so that I can have a copy for myself and a copy to share, should the opportunity arise.

This book is not a breakdown of the clobber passages (though they are mentioned very late in the book), but rather a range of people's attempts to interpret for themselves what it means to love and obey God. This book is especially apropos for people coming from an evangelical background, or who are curious how evangelical Christians work out their faith in this particular arena.

Many books on this subject center on defending a particular reading of the Bible and on the author's personal journey. Jeff manages to remain on the edge of the story as a patient and loving and curious observer who still has skin in the game. The result is a unique and valuable contribution to the existing collection of books available to gay Christians and those who want to thoughtfully engage with them.

The value and thoughtfulness of the book kept me interested, even when the narrator seemed to be actively trying to sound like a robot. I'd recommend this book on the merits of its content only. Still, for a person like me, who may not sit long enough to read the print version, putting up with the wooden reading is worth the trouble. I ended up purchasing the e-book so I can go back and make sense of the statistics (there are lots of these, and they don't translate well to audio), and because there were points when the writing was inspiring enough to want to quote to friends.

"A poet is someone who can pour light into a cup, then raise it to quench your beautiful, parched, holy mouth."
Ladinsky lives up to this opening statement, as what follows is a gentle invitation to quiet one's mind and focus on the inner life of the heart. Well-chosen and -delivered lines are beaded into a fabric of meditative musical interludes. I plan to savor this again and again.

Tim Curry reads this classic beautifully, and I'm quite glad I purchased this fascinating book. Having revisited the story each holiday season by watching one of many movie productions, I was pleasantly surprised by the relatable manner of Dickens's prose and its relevance today.
