THOROUGHLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK!!
Revisado: 06-18-21
I love books about mountaineering, but this gem caught me totally off guard! It's Jon Krakauer meets Erma Bombeck! It never occurred to me a mountaineering book could have tongue-in-cheek humor.
BONUS: The talented author narrated the book!
Thank you Jim Hodgson!

Riveting!
Revisado: 08-20-19
I'd been aware of this book from the buzz it created in the shadow of the 1996 tragedy. While channel surfing, I kept stumbling upon sections of the movie about this living nightmare, so I was already interested in the story of the horror these climbers faced. Life, and a lack of "me time", never afforded me the luxury of sitting down to read and immerse myself in their story.
This Audible book made it possible for me to take my time to get acquainted with the characters and the tale of their life and death struggle. Jon Krakauer brought the whole story and scene to life. I could feel the pain and moral dilemma of the climbers; I could see the haunted battlefield unfolding strewn with bodies in the wake of a war with nature and the "Mother Goddess".
The narrator did a superb job with inflection, and it was easy to differentiate the individual dialogues in "discussions". That had been my main hesitancy in an audio book; I was worried I would lose track of who was speaking. I was so pleasantly surprised with this format, and this was the perfect choice for my first selection.
