Audio sound too soft and too loud

The story itself if pretty depressing - I’m sure it gets better and more hopeful, but the audio was so annoying I quick listening halfway thru and will not finish it. The audio volume oscillates between whisper quiet (read inaudible) to quite loud. I could not find a volume setting that worked. I got tired of missing phrases and rewinding, adjusting the volume up to hear what was said, and then a few minutes later being blasted by high volume. I listen to a lot of books, and this was the most poorly balanced to date. Too bad.

It started pretty dark - it’s not always pleasant to follow a character who is descending into depression. But the story was handled so well, and the grief work so true. Stick with it!!

Good story about horse racing in the south, pre-civil war slave culture and contemporary equine art (I didn’t know there was such a thing). The contemporary police shooting portion - both how it unfolded and particularly his girlfriend’s underdeveloped response fell flat compared to the rest of the writing.
